Obituary

The following information, apparently from an obituary for Joshua Houghton, was obtained from the files of Grace Fishel:
" Joshua F. Houghton, born in Hebron, Washington County on Sept 27, 1815. At age of 21 moved with his people to St. Law county. On Nov 13, 1839 he married Cynthia Washburn and together they started life in the wilderness of St. Lawrence Co, building them a log cabin. Mr. & Mrs Houghton lived in St. Lawrence County for 18 yrs then moved back to Washington County and lived there until he died at his home in Liverpool aged nearly 87 years. He was for years one of the best known dealers in cattle in the state. Mr. Houghton was a Republican. He had been a member of the Methodist Church for over 50 years and for 40 years he had been a class leader. He leaves one son and four daughters - Chester Houghton and Emily Houghton of Liverpool; Mrs. Jewett M. DeLong and Mrs. George W. Morgan of Syracuse, and Mrs. C. Maxwell of Collamar, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral was held at his home in LIverpool & from Methodist church."

Joshua F. Houghton died Friday at his home in Liverpool aged 87 years. He leaves one son and four daughters. They are: Chester Houghton and Miss Emily Houghton of Liverpool and Mrs Tamar Delong and Mrs. C. Maxwell, both of this city.

The following obituary appeared in the Mortuary Notes section of the Syracuse Journal on January 13, 1894:
Cynthia, wife of J. F. Houghton, died yesterday at Liverpool, aged 73. Funeral services will be held at the family residence on Monday at 1:30 and from the ME church at 2 o'clock.¹⁰

Biography

JWH: "He was clerk in pension office at time of death, and was pension agent. His wife carries on the pension business at 2618 K. St., Washington, D.C. Edward inherited a sword which was brought over to this country by John the emigrant. This sword, which is known as a 'hanger sword,' being worn more as a part of a gentleman's dress, rather than as a practical weapon. The hilt has upon it the rose of England and the thistle of Scotland, and upon the blade on either side is engraved 'I.N.I.H.I.' It is said that there is a companion sword at Houghton Tower. It is now in possession of his son, Allan Josiah Houghton."⁵
