BiographyJWH, MLM: He lived with his parents on the paternal homestead, never in the hands of any but the Houghton's, until the death of his father in 1822 [??]. He was a graduate of Yale Divinity School in 1843, and pastor of the Congregational Church in Northboro, Mass., ten years. He resigned in 1851 because of ill health. He went to Berlin in 1852. In 1853 he was installed over Congregational Church in Berlin and resigned 10, 25, 1878, after a pastorate of 25 years. He spent the last 10 years of his life in collecting material for a history of Berlin which, through failing health, he was unable to complete, and which was afterwards finished by Rev. George G. Pratt, who was, in 1911, pastor of the First M. E. Church, Springfield, Ill. He and Mary had no children [CJV: adopted]. In 1841 Mary Grace was discharged to the church in Northboro and on May 4, 1854, she was readmitted to the church in Berlin. William was admitted to the church in Berlin "from Yale College, " on May 4, 1854. He was on the school board in 1853, 1858, 1860, 1866, 1870, 1873, 1880, 1883, and 1886.

Worcester Co. Hx. (Berlin Section written by William Addison): On the north, almost the entire section of Berlin was owned by the Lancaster Houghtons. John Houghton was among the first properietors of the "ten miles square" of Lancaster. Two of his sons settled on the Berlin territory. By 1738 a majority of Lancaster Houghtons fell into Bolton. John's son Robert was the progenitor of the principle Berlin Houghton line. From 1675 to 1825, for 6 generations, Houghtons occupied the same homestead in Berlin. William Addison was the last of that name in Berlin. He began preparing for college at 22, graduate from Yale in 1840. He was at Yale Divinity School and at the Congreg. Church of Northboro in 1843. He resigned from that Church n 1851. He resided in Berlin in 1852. He was installed as pastor in the Congreg. Church of Berlin Oct. 25, 1853, resigning after twenty five years on Oct. 25, 1878.
