BiographyVanNoy: "Noah had a son Adin, probably from his first marriage. Adin deserted during the Civil War and fled to Canada and apparently was never heard of again. His desertion records are at the National Archives in Washington D.C."

B.H.Houghton: "We do know Noah had a son, Adin, who was born in New York. The family story was that Adin was a deserter in the Civil War. Supposedly, he came home because of marital difficulties. The authorities came after him. While taking him back by train, he escaped through a window, when the train stopped in the night. He came home again long enough to say good-bye to his family and fled into Canada and wasn't heard from again. A copy of his military record shows him as a Private in Company I, 7 Regiment Michigan Cavalry. The Company Muster-in Roll was dated February 19, 1863 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He joined for duty and enrolled on Dec 17, 1862 at the age of 27, in Woodstock County for a period of 3 years. The record also shows he deserted from Fairfax, Virginia on June 21, 1863. To add to Adin's story, there is a copy of a mortgage dated November 1, 1856 made by Adin Houghton and Eliza, his wife.

Contrary to the family stories about his disappearance, Adin appears in the 1870 census in Woodstock Township, Lenawee County, Michigan:

Houghton
Adrian (Adin) - Age 36 - Farmer - Real Estate
Owned 720 - Born New York
Eliza - Age 35 - Born New York
Frank - Age 13 - Born Michigan

Their names did not appear in the 1880 census in Woodstock Township, and no further information has been found on them."1,4
