ObituaryNov 8, 1895MRS. D. A. HOUGHTON.
Mrs. Emily B. Houghton died Wednesday morning at her home on Green street, alter a long Illness from progressive paralysis. Her age was 78. She was the daughter of Luther Miller of Dummerston and was bom in that town in 1817. There were ten children in the family, of whom M. M. Miller and B. C. Miller, both of Brattleboro, are the only survivors. Mrs. Houghton grew up in Dummerston and with the exception of the time which she spent at work in Boston at her trade as a talloress she lived In that town until her marriage in 1843 to Don A. Houghton. Immediately after their marriage Mr. and
Mrs. Houghton settled on the well-known Houghton farm on the Putney road where they lived until Mr. Houghton's death in 1884. Seven children were bom to them, of whom six are living John F. who occupies the old homestead, Emma, wife of W. H. Frost of AVllliamsville, Ada E., a long-time employee of The Phoenix office, Ella L., Annie the wife of F. M. Walte, and Bertha A. Jennie, the youngest of the family, wife of F. W. Nichols, died In 1888. Mrs. Houghton united with the Congregational church In Dummerston at the age of 10. She never transferred her membership from that church and always
ieu a ueep interest in its auairs. After tne death of her husband she came to Brattleboro and her home has since been with ber daughters here. Disability caused by a broken hip has kept her from mingling with the active life of the community but she has had many friends who have found pleasure In her bright and Intelligent conversation. Energy and perseverance were her marked personal Qualities. She maintained to the last a lively Interest In the
affairs of the day, and there were few who could talk with her vigor and Intelligence upon the politics of the last 50 years. Her final lllnss, which first showed itself last spring, was undoubtedly due to the broken hip already spoken of. The funeral was held at the house yesterday afternoon, Rev.
C. O. Day officiating. The burial was In the family lot on Prospect hill.

DeathApr 12, 1914Roswell, NM, USA, at home of her daughter, Mrs. E. H. Garlington7
ObituaryApr 13, 1914Her obituary ran on the front page of the April 13, 1914 edition of the ROSWELL DAILY RECORD:

"WIFE OF FIRST CHIEF JUSTICE OF N. MEX. DEAD

A bit of interesting early history of New Mexico has come to light through
the death here yesterday of Mrs. Carolyn Giles Houghton, who, it is
learned, was the wife of the first chief justice of the territory of New
Mexico, appointed in the year 1846. She was one of the pioneers of the
state having been in the state 63 years.

Mrs. Houghton's death occurred yesterday morning at 10:20 at the home of
her daughter, Mrs. E. H. Garlington at 501 North Kentucky avenue. Funeral
services were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home, conducted by
Rev. E. N. Bullock, rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal church. Internment
was at South Park.

SKETCH OF HER LIFE.

Carolyn Giles Houghton was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on March 21, 1831,
and died at the home of her daughter in this city. Mrs. Houghton was one
of the pioneers of New Mexico, having come to the territory in 1849 with
the first army command that crossed the plains after the territory of New
Mexico became United States Territory.

She was the eldest daughter of the late W. R. Shoemaker, U.S.A., who

served as Captain of Ordinance at old Fort Union for thirty-five years and
later made that his home until his death in 1886.

In 1856 she became the wife of Judge Joab Houghton, at that time Chief
Justice of the Territory of New Mexico. They made their home in Santa Fe,
where they lived a great many years and where all but one of their six
children were born. Of this number, four are now living: W. R. Houghton
of Center Moriches, N.Y., E. C. Houghton of El Paso, Texas; D. H.
Houghton, of La Junta, Colo., and Mrs. E. H. Garlington of this city. The
three latter were at the bedside of their mother when the end came.

Mrs. Houghton was a communicant of the Episcopal church, having been
confirmed at the age of eighteen years."

A note about her was also printed on April 13, 1914 on the front page of
