NoteMar 13, 1775Winchester, VT/MA, USA, MLM: [from Dr. Harris Ayres Houghton] " He and William French were shot in mass as the first proto-martyrs of the Rev. War, dying as results of wounds in a fray with the "Yorker" Royalists in which Vermonters fired no shots. New York, under a Royalist governor, vied with New Hampshire for Vermont. Daniel was removed the following morning to the house of ellazer Harlow, a short distance west of the court house, where he died nine days later. The "Vorrenor's" (sic) Jury, Amos Tute, "Corriner," sat on the death of young French (to whom a marble stone was erected with a classic epitaph). Houghton was buried in the Westminster Court House yard by a stone shapless and unknown. This stone had disappeared by the time Hall wrote his book (1858). There is now a stone cairn of cemented stone marking his Grave (MLM visit of 1934).
Daniel must have grown up in an atmosphere of fighting and patriotism. He must have known all about the issues at stake, and the excitement of the time must have aroused the enthusiasm which placed him in the front ranks of those who received the shower of musket balls from the minions of King George III. His father must have been "under arms," when Experience was "warned out," with her three youngest children. Putney is near Ft. Dummer (Dummerston, VT).
The victim probably left Bolton, where his father lived, visited his uncle Simon in Petersham, then went to Vermont to see his brother, Asa, at Putney, and topped it off iwth a visit to cousin Jotham at Dummerston. While in this region he was caught in the whorl of the Revolutionary tide, followed the inclinations of environment and his heredity in getting into first ranks of the fight, in which most if not all of his male relatives were participating, and from which he embodied his patriotic sentiments and was killed. (Hist. of Captain John Kathan gives residence of Daniel as Dummerston, Vermont, on page 30.)"

Westminter VRs: "shot at Westminster, Mar 13, 1775, at the Westminster massacre with William French"3,9
DeathMar 22, 1775Brattleboro, Windham Co., VT, USA, William French was killed and Daniel Houghton was mortally wounded, both of Dummerston, VT, on Mar. 13, 1775, in an attempt of the Whigs, or Liberty Men, to prevent the holding of court by the New York officers. French was the first martyr of the Revolution. Daniel Houghton was removed the following morning to the house of Eleazer Harlow, a short distance from the court house where he died 9 days latter.10,6,11,3
