F, #1441, b. 22 March 1660/61, d. before 1721

Family: John Harris Jr. b. 19 Jan 1676, d. 16 May 1739

  • Marriage*: Mary Houghton married John Harris Jr. at Lancaster, Worcester Co., MA, USA, 23 June 1698: JWH date for John Harris and Sarah Houghton; 1/wf; Torrey gives a Mary Houghton as wife of John Harris, but J.W. Houghton gives John Harris as husband of John Houghton the Immigrant's daughter Sarah (with 1698 date), and Mary as wife of Thomas Wilder; Torrey gives 1/wf Mary Houghton (1666-); while this is a different bd than John Houghton the Immigrant's daughter Mary, John Houghton's will of 1684 clearly gives his daughter as Mary Harris (see Burr & Gage, p. 383).
NEHGR, 105 & BT: John Harris had married Mary Houghton
    NEHGR, 152: after 1684, prob. Lancaster.9,18,10,19,16,20,17,21

BiographyBurr & Gage, p. 394: "Mary, b. 22 Mar. 1660/1 (Dedham records); m. John Harris. She appears to have had two children, Benjamin and Mary. (In an instrument dated 19 Aug. 1740, recorded in Worchester Deeds, lib. 12, p. 504, is a recital that Benjamin Harris and Mary, wife of Philip Larkin, were heirs to land "left to them by heirship by their late honored mother Mary Harris descending to her from their late honored grandfather, John Houghton late, of Lancaster, deceased."

J.W.Houghton, Houghton Genealogy, p. 301: "m. 6,23, 1688, Thomas Wilder, b. in Dedham, Mass, 1,28,1658"

Pioneers of Mass., 1900: aft 1684, presumably died without issue before 1721, since no share of mother's estate.

D. Hand Dymond and V.I. Morgan and Boston Transcript, 11/12/1924: W.B.B.N., give John Harris as her husband.

Boston Transcript, 4/22/1908: Mary Houghton of Lancaster who married, 1668, Thomas Wilder. She was the mother of Colonel James Wilder, born 1681, who married, 1709, Abigail Gardiner (Andrew 3, Thomas 2, Thomas 1, Planter 1), Cape Ann, 1623.13
ResearchMarriage problem: John Houghton's will gives Mary Harris as daughter; unlikely that wife of Thomas Wilder (md 1668) was Mary Houghton; probably Mary Wheeler; 2 diff. md for Thomas and Mary's ??, one in 1668 (non J.W. Houghton) and one in 1688 (J. W. Houghton); marriage problem: mar. date and bd not compatible, Mary Houghton would have been age 7 in 1668; John Houghton's will of 1684 gives Mary Harris (but his death prior to md to Wilder)

Bolton Historical Website: 159 Golden Run Road is the oldest known of the many farmhouses in the north part of town that once belonged to members of the Houghton family, original settlers of Lancaster. A large tract of land on Golden Run, Harvard, and Bare Hill Roads stretching north into Harvard had been owned by Houghtons since the early days of the town of Lancaster. When petitions were presented to set off new towns in the 1720's and 1730's, many of the most active proponents were the farmers in this north part of what ultimately became Bolton. At least four of the five members of the first Bolton Board of Selectmen in 1738 lived in this section of town, and three of them were Houghtons.
Bolton's first Town Clerk, Jacob Houghton, lived nearby in a house long-since demolished, and other Houghtons once ran an inn or tavern at the intersection of Golden Run and Harvard Roads that lasted for generations. The inn, in fact, which looked out over a green where musical entertainments often took place, gave the longtime name of "Fiddler's Green", or simply "the Green", to Golden Run and the east section of Green Roads.
Over the years, parcels of the huge land grants to the early settlers were divided out to provide farms for later generations. This house is believed to have been built for Henry Houghton, possibly as early as ca. 1700, and for generations was the home of a long line of his direct descendants.

History of Arkansas, p. 1184: Jacob Houghton, the «on of John, was born February 17, 1672; probably married Rebecca Whitcomb; and Benjamin Houghton, their son, married Ruth Wheelock. and the issue of their union were as follows: Justice John, born July 20. 1720; Ezra. born July 29. 1722; Abijah, born September 22, 1723; Relief, born October 23. 1726; Elijah, born June 16. 1728. The latter was a “minute man’' of the Revolutionary period and a private in Colonel Benjamin Houghton s Company, Colonel John Whitcomb’s Regiment, which marched on the alarm of Paul Revere, April 19, 1775. to Cambridge. He was also a private in Colonel Asa Whitcomb’s regiment and Captain Houghton's company; was enlisted April 27. 1775. and mustered out on August 1, following. This interesting record is shown in Volume VIII, of the Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolution. Following Elijah rnme Parnee Houghton, born April 14. 1730; Philemon, born June 3, 1731; Nehemiah, born October 1, 1732; Ruth, born April 3. 1734; Lemuel, born September 25. 1735; and Benjamin, born May 10. 1740.

Was in the garrison of Josiah Whitcomb in Lanc. 1704; later in command of a garrison; schoolmaster of Lancaster, 1727 (Ref.: Wor. Mag., by Lincoln and Baldwin, bk. 2, p. 266). A proprietor for the additional grant.

Henry Houghton (1676-1756) was truly one of the founders of Bolton. He signed the petition that was finally successful in setting off Bolton from Lancaster, and served on the first Board of Selectmen. In 1711 his house--possibly this one--was designated as a garrison house, and in 1739 he signed the first covenant that led to the building of the first meetinghouse. He died at the age of 80, and in their later years, it appears that he and his wife, Anna (1683-1748) shared the house with their son, Joseph Houghton3,14,15,33,28

BiographyBurr & Gage: 'Youngest daughter' (Worcester Deeds, lib 2, p.536), m.. as early as 1715 Joseph Brabrook (ib., lib. 9, p. 167)2
ResearchAlene Kremer: "wills of Joseph and Hepsibah (Houghton) Brabrook, and they do indeed mention two sons and a daughter, but the sons are very different. Bethesda (married to Josiah Houghton) is mention as an heir, as were two younger sons, Comfort Brabrook and William Brabrook, both minors at the time of their parents' death (1742-43). Comfort (born 1729) is called the "eldest son" and William (born 1731) is called the "second son."
Wikitree:
Houghton, and Hepsibeth Brabrook, wife of JosephBrabrook:

In a deed dated January 4, 1733 a John Houghton gave his youngest daughter Hepsibeth and her husband Joseph Brabrook several parcels of land in Lancaster: "I John Houghton of Lancaster in the County of Worcester in his majesties province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England Esq for love good will I bear unto my Son in Law Joseph Braybrook and Hepsibah Brabrook my youngest daughter Wife of the said Joseph Braybrook both of Brookfield in the County and province aforesaid..." The deed also mentions "...Some Lands I have Given to my son Wm Houghton..." [4]

The writer of the deed and father of Hepsibeth appears to be Justice John Houghton. Lieutenant John Houghton, the first son of Justice John Houghton, is old enough to be the father of Hepsibeth, and he has two daughters, only one of which John W, Houghton's book has identified. However, if his date of death is correct as 1724, he could not be the John Houghton transferring land in 1733/4. The writer of the deed also mentions that he has a son Wm Houghton. If Lieut. John Houghton had no sons as the book suggests, it is further evidence that the writer of the deed is Justice John Houghton and that he is the father of Hepsibeth who married Joseph Brabrook.10

Biography“Joshua Houghton and his brother, Eleazar Houghton, were one of the Founding Families of what is now known as Boylston. They had been granted land by the Lancaster Proprietors in 1722/23. Joshua had married Elizabeth Bennett in Lancaster on April 8, 1719. Joshua and his family of 8 children settled in the area near 330 Linden Street. Joshua’s wife, Elizabeth (Bennett) died, and he married Elizabeth Garfield on November 27, 1746. He died in Lancaster in 1779. His son, Solomon was a notorious Tory and is believed to have built the present structure at 330 Linden Street.” [Boylston Historical Series by Bruce Filgate, pg 71]
ProblemPossibility that Elisabeth Garfield was Joshua Sr's wife, not Joshua Jr. Only JWH and MLM give her as wife of Joshua Jr.
Nancy Wilson: My husband is descended from Joshua Jr's sister Vashti Houghton. In doing her line I noticed that her father, Joshua Sr, was widowed relatively early in his life but, unlike most men of the time, there was no mention of a second marriage. His surviving children were certainly not infants but, nonetheless, he was left with children under the age of 10 and one would expect him to marry if only to provide care for these children. One reason for men not marrying, I have found, is that they 'take off' on a spirited adventure, ie go West, strike out for the gold fields, whatever. However, Joshua Sr seems to have stayed very local as evidenced by the filing of his will in Worcester. So, we are left with the inference that he remained a widower for 35- 40 years and died the widower of Elizabeth Bennett.

Meanwhile we appear to have his son marrying, Elisabeth Garfield/Gaffel, in 1746 (about 5 yrs into his father's widowhood) having no children, and this wife dying soon enough/young enough to allow him to marry a 2nd time and have a family.

Is it all possible? Absolutely. But barring proof positive, we must hold out the possibility that Joshua Sr re-married, to Elisabeth Garfield, after 5 yrs or so of being a widower.
CJV: Lancaster and Shrewsbury (just Joshua, no Sr or Jr) VRs give marriage of Joshua (not Joshua Jr) Houghton and Elizabeth Garfield/Gaffell26
ResearchFrancis W. Houghton erroneously gives two sons of Ralph Jr: Joshua and Eleazer Houghton [ CJV: the latter is actually the son of Robert Houghton, son of John the emigrant]; FWH: later he correctly gives Joshua as son of Robert27
