BiographyJohn S. Hurie, son of Josiah and Nancy Hurie, was born in Cass County, Illinois in 1854. He married Anna Maria Houghton, daughter of Andrew M. and Barbara Houghton, October, 1878. They were the parents of four sons, A. E., E. J., W. L. and Frank.

Mr. Hurie came to Rock Creek in 1880, where, since that time, he had been extensively engaged in farming and stock raising.

An ardent friend of popular education, far a number of years it was largely due to his efforts that the Rock Creek School was furnished with teachers of a high grade of scholarship.

For a time he took an active part in the politics of the county.

Several years after the death of Mr. Hurie's wife, he married Miss Jennie Hamilton [1866 - 1948] daughter of Robert and Clara McDougall Hamilton, of Petersburg, Ill; a woman of fine qualities of heart and mind.
The Hurie home has always been one of hospitality, and its doors have ever been open to those who were in need of encouragement or help of any kind

DeathJan 31, 1889Petersburg, Menard Co., IL, USA, H. Houghton: 1889; Gary Lint: 15 Jan 1888
Gary Lint: the tombstone shows the date of January 15, 1889 which is NOT correct according the the State of Illinois, Menard County, Affidavit of Decease.
On it, it shows the date of death as 22 Jan. 1889 and is signed by his brother, William C. on Jan 31, 1889. (I have a copy of the Affidavit)
So the tombstone mason apparently made a mistake!2,1,12
BurialConcord Cemetery, Petersburg, IL, USA, Gary Lint: "The cemetery is surrounded by cornfields and you have to drive up a drainage ditch to get to it. Sevigna's marker is missing or covered over, so I haven't seen it, but all records record him being buried there. Plus if you read Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology, there is a poem "On the Hill" talking about people "sleeping (buried) on the hill". One line of the poem says; "Where are Uncle Isaac and Aunt Emily, And old Towny Kincaid and Sevigna Houghton, And Major Walker who had talked With venerable men of the Revolution, All, All are sleeping on the Hill." The Hill is Old Concord Cemetery! Another interesting note about Old Concord is that Ann Rutledge was (is?) buried there. She was Abe Lincoln's intended, but she died before they were to be married. It is said that Lincoln mourned for weeks in the cemetery at her loss. The rest of the story is, and I got this from the daughter of one of the town fathers when it happened, the town fathers wanted to open a cemetery in Petersburg around the turn of the century, and thought if they had a big name buried there, more people would choose it for their burial spot. So, they went up and dug up poor Ann Rutledge so she could be buried in the new cemetery called Oakland. The only problem was she had decomposed so much, that all they could find were some buttons and 2 shoe buckles!!! So they buried those articles in Oakland Cemetery and have a big monument to Ann, and say this is where she is buried. That is why I still say she is buried in Old Concord. The spot she was buried in is marked by a sign saying "This marks the original grave of Ann Rutledge. Born Jan. 7, 1813 Died Aug. 25, 1835"
2013: Charlie,

I was just surfing your website, and noted that you show Sevigna buried at Old Concord Cemetery. This is info you got from me and is wrong. As I said in my last email, Sevigna is buried in CONCORD Cemetery, which is a couple of miles away from Old Concord. If you go to Find a Grave, Menard Co. Illinois, Concord Cemetery you will see the picture I took of his grave.
Sorry I misled you!!
