Obituary2011Bernadine T. Houghton, 94, a retired homemaker, died of pneumonia at 5:48 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2011, in Columbus, Ohio, having been ill only two days. The loving care provided by the staff of Worthington Christian Village was greatly appreciated by Bernadine and her family. She had been a resident since April 2003 and in the skilled care unit since December 2008.
The daughter of Roy and Mona Bishop Thompson, Bernadine was born on the family farm in Eminence Township, Logan County, Ill., July 17, 1916. She graduated from Atlanta Community High School in 1934 and, in the fall of 1934, went to Gregg Business College in Chicago to study secretarial science. The program was competency-based, so she graduated when she passed exams in typing, shorthand, and business English. Bernadine worked for Frank Bevan in Atlanta as a legal secretary for two years prior to her August 6, 1936 marriage to Eldon E. Houghton.
Over the years, due to his employment, Bernadine and Eldon lived in Dunlap, Illinois; Springfield, Illinois; Falls Church, Virginia; and Columbus, Ohio. Following retirement, they lived for 13 years in Port Richey, Florida. In 1995, they moved to Worthington Christian Colony on the north edge of Columbus, Ohio.
Throughout her life, Bernadine was a member of Christian churches, often serving as pianist, organist, and Sunday school teacher. She generously shared her skills as musician, seamstress, gardener, and flower arranger with family and friends. She was a Girl Scout leader in Springfield, Illinois, Grove City, Ohio, and Falls Church, Virginia.
