-----------------------
Boy Didn't Know a Revolver Was Loaded--
Luther Houghton , age 14 , Shot Above the Ear--
Poor Little Fellow May Die.
-----------------------

Brown City, Michigan ., Jan. 28-Special.-
Luther Houghton and Stewart Gibbs , both about
14 years of age , played "the assassination of
Lincoln" at the latter's house. During the absence
of his parents , with Luther in the title role.
At the climax of the play Stewart pointed a 22-
caliber revolver at his playmate, not knowing that
it was loaded and pulled the trigger. To his horror
the weapon was discharged, and Luther wounded just
above the ear. He will probably die. Both Boys are
of good families, The Gibbs boy is grief stricken ,
but no blame is attached to him as the shooting was
purely accidental

ObituaryThe Courier is again called upon to chronicle the death of one of its citizens, Mrs. Western Houghton, who died last Thursday morning February 6th 1902, about 7 a.m., after a sickness of three weeks. The Deceased gave birth to little twin daughters a short time ago. For the first week she appeared to be getting along all right but complications set in to which she finally succumbed. Nina E. Blanchard was married to Western Houghton February 18, 1900, she was 36 years old last April. As a result of this union six children have been born all of whom are now alive to mourn the loss of their mother. The loss is indeed great to the stricken husband and little children who need the guiding hand and care of the mother. Sympathy does not go far in cases like this, yet it is certainly extended to the bereaved ones by the whole community. The funeral was held last Saturday afternoon in the M.E. church, Rev. C.A. Hughes, officiating. The remains were interred in the Cooperstown cemetery.4
