BiographyPer the 1841 census from Preston, Lancashire, England, Aaron and Eleanor were married in England before migrating to the New World. They had two children born in England. Since Mary is listed as 3 months in 1841 and third child Alice was American born in 1846, it must be assumed that the family migrated sometime about 1844-1845. I did not find an 1850 US Federal Census to verify the family's location when first coming to America, but Alice's birth is registered as in Wisconsin so it may be assumed that shortly after arrival in the US, the family had migrated to Grant County.

The 1860 Census shows Aaron and "Ellen" living in Beetown Township. His occupation is listed as "farming":
Children listed are: ...Mary, age 18, born in England; although living at home she is also listed under occupation as "domestic"; apparently she was a "hired girl" for one of the neighbors...Alice J, age 14, born in Wisconsin Territory (Wisconsin statehood occurred in 1848)...Margaret, age 11...William E, age 9; and ...Bethena, age 7

The 1870 Census did not contain a lot of extra information. Aaron and Ellen and four of the above children: (interesting to compare the ages, which should be about 10 year older, but show some differences): Mary, age 29; Maggie, age 23; William, age 21; and Bethena, age 16. Also, listed with this household is Mary Boil (penmanship not precise), age 3. The relationship to Aaron is not listed.

The 1880 Census shows Aaron and "Ellen" living in Beetown Township and his occupation is listed as "farming". Also listed living at home daughter Mary, 38 years of age, all born in England, and a grandson Wilbert Short, age 2. Wilbert's parentage is not listed, only his "grandparentage".

Aaron passed away on March 14, 1882, at the age of 69 Years, 3 Months, 27 Days, at the family home in Beetown Township. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Eleanore Houghton, on October 14, 1853, at the tender age of only 2 Years, 6 Months, 9 Days.

He was survived by ...his wife Eleanor...two sons......Edward (Maria) Houghton, and ......William (Clara) Houghton, both of Beetown Township...four daughters,
......Mary Houghton, at home......Alice (Mrs John) Blackbourn, Taylor Township, Iowa......Margaret (Mrs William) Short, Beetown Township; and ......Bethany,(Mrs James) Iliff, Beetown.9

ObituaryMay 22, 1893Miss Ellen Houghton
Ellen Houghton was a native of England, born Aug. 29, 1811. She married at Proton, Lancashire, England, in 1888. to Mr. Aaron Houghton. Mr. Houghton came to America in 1842. The wife with two children followed in 1844. Mr. Houghton lived with his little family a short time at Piatteville, this county. Came to Beetown in 1845, where a humble but Christian horne was established. Five other children was born to them. The husband and father died March 14, 1882, aged 70 years. The mother entered into rest, April 27, 1893, aged 81 years, 7 months and 28 days. Six children grew to manhood and womanhood. Edwin, William, Mrs. John Blackbourne, Mrs. Wm. 8hort, Mrs. James Iliff aud Mary who remained in the old home with the aged mother. Mrs. Houghton often had the comforting presence of her children as all settled in the township of Beetown, and all were present at the funeral. Grandma Houghton was a devout Christian, having united with tne people of God in early girlhood. For many years she has been confined to her home on account of rheumatism, with which she has been afflicted. In other ways she was remarkably well
preserved, conversing with a ready wit and cheerfulness of manner surprising, and most pleasant to behold ina person of her advanced age. Full well do we remember a visit to her one lovely sunny day, when the brightness of the outside world was reflected in the shining light of her face. How comforting were her words, so thankful
she was for the smallest mercies, so submissive, in all thlings, to the Divine will. That picture of the dear old lady is oue to hang in Memory’s hall. Her last illnes was of short duration. A cold, a gradual weariness creeping over her, a semi-consciousness, and the aged pilgrim went to sleep like a tired child.
"Asleep in Jesus! Blessed sleep! From which none ever wake to. Services were held at the school house. The remains were in the beautiful cemetery there by
graves of her husband and child. The children desire thanks to be given to all friends who assisted them in the sickness and burial of their beloved mother.     B. D. S.

BiographyFindagrave:
Eleanor Sumner, daughter of James and Jane Sumner, was born August 29, 1811, in Preston, Lancashire, England. She was united in marriage with Aaron Houghton in her home town village church. Their first child, a son, Edward, was born January 15, 1839. A second child, a daughter, Mary, was born in 1841.

In 1844, Eleanor and Aaron with their two children emigrated from England to America, purchased and settled on farm land in Beetown Township, Grant County, Wisconsin. The family occupation was general farming and during the following years five more children would be born to them: Allice in 1846, William in 1849, Margaret in 1950, Eleanor in 1851, and Bethany in 1853. Sadly, little Eleanor lived only 2 Years, 6 Months, 9 Days, passing away in 1853.

The 1880 U.S. Federal census lists only daughter Mary still living at home as well as a grandson, 2-year old Wilber Short (son of daughter Margaret and William Short). Both their sons, Edward and William, had married and were farming their own lands a few miles away, also in Beetown Township. Eleanor and Aaron farmed for almost 40 years in Beetown Township before Aaron passed away in 1882 at the age of 69. Eleanor and daughter Mary continued on their farm until Eleanor passed away 11 years later on August 27, 1893.

Eleanore was survived by six of her seven children: ...Edward (Maria Birch) Houghton and family...Mary Houghton...Alice (John) Blackbourn and family...William (Clara Bowen) and family...Margaret (William) Short and family, and ...Bethany (James) Iliff and family,

She was preceded in death by ...her husband Aaron on March 14, 1882, and ...daughter Eleanor, October 14, 1853

Eleanor (Sumner) Houghton, 81 Years, 7 Months, 29 Days, was laid to rest next to her husband Aaron and her little daughter Eleanor in Dodge Cemetery, not to distant from the farm where they had lived since coming to America 50 years before.9
