IA Hx: For his adherence to the new Mormon faith he was disinherited by his father, a wealthy citizen of VT, but he nevertheless relinquished all his interests in his native state, including a very desirable position as manager of a large shoe factory employing sixty men, and set up a shoemaker's shop in Nauvoo, where he prospered, and by his industry built up a good business. He remained a Mormon all his life, and in 1848 went to Prairie du Chien, where he died the same year, while his wife died at the home of her son, David, in Montrose in 1871, she having been remarried to a Mr. Timmons and returned to Nauvoo where she taught school after the occupation of that place by a French colony.3

Mrs. Christian Hamma died at her home in Sonora Township this morning at 1:20 o’clock after a short illness, aged about seventy-five years. The lady has been a resident of this vicinity for a good many years and her many friends will be sorry to hear about her death. At the time of going to press, funeral arrangements have not been made. Obituary in our next issue.

"Nauvoo Independent" January 23, 1907

The funeral services of the late Mrs. Christian Hamma who died after a brief sickness of Pneumonia, last Wednesday morning, were held at the Christian Church, Golden Point, on Friday afternoon, conducted by H. R. Trickett. Not withstanding the inclement weather, a large company of neighbors and friends were present on the occasion, so great was the esteem in which this excellent lady was held. The text of the funeral sermon was 1st Thess. 4-13-14. The maiden name was Elizabeth Houghton. She was born in Orange County, Vermont February 19, 1832. She came to this state in 1840 and resided in Nauvoo at which place she was married to Mr. Christian Hamma April 18, 1851. After her marriage she removed to Chicago staying there but a short time and then returned to Nauvoo, staying here about three years. Mr. Hamma then purchased a farm known as the “Snell Place” where they stayed until she removed with her husband to the home she occupied at the time of her lamented death, being a period of twenty-three years.

She had long been a great suffer with asthma, but the immediate cause of her death was pneumonia, the fatal result of a severe cold. She was sick but a few days and no fatal results were anticipated until the last day. She passed away very gently with scarcely a struggle, she passed from mortality to immortality.

In her youth she united with the LDS Church and was immersed in the Mississippi. She never attached herself to any other denomination, but was a truly good Christian woman, respected by all who knew her.

Thirteen children were born to her, eleven of whom are still alive. George died when he was five years old and Christian died about six years ago. The others were all present either at her death or at her funeral, as were her sons and daughters in law, as well as many of her grand children. The names of the surviving children are: Mrs. Lizzie Noles, Mrs Mary Carss, Mrs.Sadie Ballinger, Mrs Rose Enright, Mrs Ida Herbert, Mrs Nellie Trickett, Mrs. Amy Greenslaugh, David, Henry, William and Frank Hamma. She leaves thirty grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
She also leaves a brother, David Houghton of Montrose, Iowa and a half sister , Mrs. John Burns of Rock Island, Illinois.

At the conclusion of the sermon the following "in memorium" was read, giving that gentlemans estimate of this good woman.

          ______________________________________________________

As written by Ida Pearl HAMMA KRUSE: "My Grandma Millissa Houghton was born in Orange County Vermont. She had a brother David Houghton who volunteered for service inthe Civil War at the age of 17. When the war began in 1861 he fought in all the major battles and received an honorable discharge in 1865. My father who was born August 25, 1865 and each generation since has had a David. My Great Grandpa HOUGHTON died and my Great Grandma married a man named BURNS and had several children by him. She lived to 70 something and is buried by Grandpa HAMMA (Christian) on the Harry Trickett lot in Oak Grove Cemetery near Golden Point Church." (Nancy's note: Ida was probably refering to her Grandma (Millissa) in the last statement and may have been mixed up on the names of TIMMONS and BURNS.)

NAUVOO INDEPENDENT - Feb. 28, 1906 - "Mrs. Chris Hamma celebrated her 70th birthday one day last week. Her children helped her celebrate and the event was pleasant for all."
