B. EXETER, DEVON:
As I am sure you know, ages in the census records are not always exact. I check the IGI extracted christening batches in Exeter Devon, for a Thomas Houghton, christened about 1789, and found the following family, which may or may not be your Thomas:
JOSEPH HOUGHTON married MARY TOSWEL: 12 Jun 1785, St. Paul's, Exeter, Devon (IGI Batch M004661)
CHILDREN:
ELIZABETH HOUGHTON, christened 17 Feb 1786, St. Paul's, Exeter, Devon (IGI Batch P004661)
THOMAS HOUGHTON, christened 25 Sep 1787, St. Paul's, Exeter, Devon (IGI Batch P004661)

JOSEPH HOUGHTON, christened 29 May 1791, Georges Meeting House, Prexeterrian [sic], Exeter, Devon (IGI Batch C063621)

Aug 31, 2012: My name is Celeste Houghton Gaytan. I have been trying to further my family history but have hit a wall. I know that my 3rd great-grandfather, Thomas Houghton, immigrated into the US (possibly viaPhiladelphia) around 1853. My family has been unable to find any record of this. We know he was born in Liverpool UK and was christened on Sept 29th 1836 and was born sometime earlier that year. We have been unable to find any record of his parents, George Houghton and Ann Jane Houghton. I know Thomas was married in Lancaster, PA to Mary Ann Hess on Feb 3rd 1858.8

Griffith:
A. ROBERT TWEED and AGNES [Surname uncertain]
These are my 5x-great-grandparents. He was born about 1703 (as derived from the tombstone inscription), but we are not sure where. He was of Scotch-Irish extraction and his family may have been in this country as early as 1700, but as yet we have found documents to prove that. He married about 1737 a woman named "Agnes" but there is some controversy as to her maiden name. The traditional view is that it was "Callwell" (or "Caldwell"), and that is the name that will generally be found on the intenet. This comes from the two of them being mentioned together in the will of one James Callwell, in which the testator also made bequests to his sister "Agnes." I, however, am of the opinion that her maiden name may have been "McCullough."
Robert Tweed died in 1767 and is buried in Middle Octorara Presbyterian Cemetery in Lancaster Co, Pennsylvania. Agnes lived until about 1814, when her will was proven in Sadsbury Township of the same county.
I am descended from their 5th child, Archibald Tweed. who was born about 1746
Mary Hess was descended from their 6th child, Joseph Tweed, who was born about 1750.
B. JOSEPH TWEED and JANE WILSON (?)
Joseph Tweed was born about 1750 in Lancaster Co, PA and died on 2 Nov 1839 in the same county.
Before 1782 he married a woman named "Jane," who was born about 1763 and died 7 Feb 1839 in Sadsbury township. A descendant of theirs claims that her maiden name was "Wilson," but I have not found anything that establishes that. They had at least 4 children, the eldest of which concerns us.
C. JESSE TWEED and BARBARA KUNCKEL
Jesse Tweed was born about 1785 in Lancaster Co, PA. He married Barbara Kunckel in the same county on 3 Feb 1814. She was born on 15 Feb 1791 and died 22 Mar 1821 in the same dounty. She came from a Pennsylvania Dutch family whose history has been traced backward for several generations. They had 3 children: two boys (William and Jesse) and a girl, Jane, who concerns us.
D. JANE TWEED and JOHN HESS
Jane Tweed was born in Jan (or possibly May) 1815 in Lancaster Co, PA and died after 1900, when she was enumerated in the household of Thomas J. Houghton in Lancaster Co, PA. According to the image of the 1900 census she had but one child who was living, rather than the 15 and 5 shown in your narrative. She married about 1840, in Lancaster Co, PA John Hess who was born about 1810 and died before 1850. Their ONLY daughter was, of course, Mary (Hess) Houghton.1,11
