BiographyHe was a Boston police inspector and was a supervisor in the state Bureau of Prisons. His wife ran a boarding house in Worcester Square in the South End of Boston.

Andrew J. Houghton, former police inspector of the Boston Police Department and for many years at the head of the Kearsarge Naval Veterans' organization with the rank of Admiral, died yesterday at his home in Ashmont. "Andy" Houghton, as he was familiarly known among his circle of friends, was a veteran of the Civil War, having run away from home in his early youth to join the navy. He traveled extensively all over the world. In his young manhood he became a member of the police force and rose to be an inspector to the department, his career being full of a great variety of experiences, which included the capture of many crooks. Since the death of his wife seven years ago Mr. Houghton had made his home with a cousin, Mrs. Mary Houghton at 27 Carruth street, Ashmont, passing much of his time also at his summer home in Scituate and Palm Beach. He was seventy-nine years of age. He leaves three nephews, Dr. Richard Houghton of East Boston, Joseph Houghton of East Boston and Arthur Houghton of New York. A niece, Miss Theresa Houghton of Roxbury, also survives him."
Boston Police Dept., Badge #70 (later 742), Div. 2, sworn in age 24, Jul. 12, 1869, living at 6 Hawthorne Place. Former occupation, a mariner. Appointed on the police force June 28, 1869. Promoted to Inspector, and transfered to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Feb. 1880. A member of Post 15, G.A.R., and the Kearsarge Naval Veterans, and the Police Relief Association. He retired Jul. 1, 1905 ($800 per year pension).
In June 1896 he went to Europe.
Famous Pursuit to Chile
During his 17 years of peaceful retirement on a police pension, Andrew Houghton retained his popularity, and his keen personal Interest In public affairs and people continued until the day of his death.
He was pensioned at his own request on July 1, 1906, after 36 years' service, 26 years of which was spent as a member and head of the famous State Street bank squad. After his retirement he still frequented "The Street,” hale, hearty and happy, until within a few days of his death. His proudest achievement was his Civil War service and his happiest hours in after years were those spent in the company of his comrades of the Kearsarge Veterans' Association, of which he was admiral for many years. As a police official he had traveled far and wide In pursuit of criminals. One of his most exciting trips was the pursuit of Frederick T. Moore,3,13

BiographyMarie: Cunningham: Carlotta died at 16 . I think it was nephritis. She is buried in the Houghton lot in Holyhood in Brookline. Her widowed mother, whose first husband was Charles Orsi, went to L.A. and married a Morris Phillips. They lived on Redondo Ave. in Long Beach . She died in 1932 and is buried there in Sunnyside Mausoleum. Carlotta's Orsi's mother was Annie (nee Desmond) Orsi. Mary Josephine Houghton's sister, and sister-in-law to Andy Houghton. Carlotta's father died and Annie, went to Calif. and married Morris Phillips and lived in Long Beach till she died in the 30s.8
