BiographyTemple: "Josiah Hurley "Joe" Temple, third and last child of John Wesley Temple and Mary C. Tanner, was born in Hardin County, Tennessee on 19 September 1856. He was named for his father's maternal grandfather, Josiah Hurley. As a young child, he moved to Texas with his parents, and his siblings. In 1870, they were residing in Titus County, Texas. After the death of his mother in about 1873, the he and his brother and sister lived together in Titus County, and his father moved to Lamar County, Texas, where he remarried.

On 16 September 1883, Joe married Sarah Rebecca "Sallie" Houghton, in Titus County, Texas. She was a daughter of William Michael Houghton and Mary Ann Bruton, who lived in the Grey Rock community of Franklin County, Texas. The story is told that Sallie and her sisters were working in the fields one day, and Allen Matthew Temple and Joe Temple were riding by. They began to tease the Houghton girls, and Sallie became perturbed by the Temple boys. Joe told her that when she got a little older he was going to come back and marry her, and that got her even more angry at him. Well, he kept his promise.

Initially, Joe and Sallie resided in Titus County, where he was a farmer. In about 1890, they moved to Lamar County, Texas, settling in the southwest part of the county near Deport, then later, in the area of Cunningham. He farmed most of his life, growing cotton, corn and vegetables. They had the usual farm livestock, using horses to work the fields, and for transportation.

They established themselves as a family of good reputation. they were devout members of the Methodist faith. They were the parents of eight children, all of whom lived to rear families of their own. These Temple children were known for being pranksters, and there was never a dull moment when they were around--a characteristic which stayed with them all of their lives. There are some marvelous stories about their "exploits."

About 1920, Joe and Sallie Temple moved to Deport, in soutwestern Lamar County, where he worked as a clerk in Glover & Bevill's store there until his death on 26 October 1924. He had been very healthy all of his life, and did not even have a cavity in his teeth. When he became ill, his death came quickly--within five days.

After his death, Sallie made her home with her daughter in Paris, and visited with her other children's families from time to time. She died in the home of her daughter Lucy (Temple) Bell in Paris, Lamar County, Texas, on 2 March 1957, at the age of 90 years.

Both Joe and Sallie Temple were are buried at Highland Cemetery at Deport, Lamar County, Texas. He was initially buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, but was reinterred because of flooding at that cemetery."2

The Houghton Company produced printed cotton cloth. There was a company store were charges were deducted from employee's wages. A son of the Houghton family ran the store. He took the charges to the bookkeeper's office at the factory on a daily basis. The company eventually sold the store. The A. C.
