The Houghton Family Bible states that Jonathan's father's name was Joseph and his mothers name was Hannah. Also Lists Jonathan's and Nancy's sons and daughters names and date of birth.

Derl Houghton: Dave Reedy did some research in Vermont about 1990 and wrote the following: (Keep in mind that additional information has been uncovered since.)
We begin Jonathans story 10 February 1803 when he was born in Vermont. He is believed to have been born and lived in and around what is now Bakersfield and Fairfield in Franklin County. His parents names have not surfaced in any records associated with him to date. There are records that an Oliver Cromwell Houghton lived in the same area at the same time. This is known by the fact that he was named as the father of Everett Oliver Houghton born in 1801 in the same area. There were other Houghton's in that area at that time. There was a small handful including Lucy Wilder Houghton, born in Bakersfield about 1802 to an Oliver and Susan Gallop (Gallis) Houghton. She married a distant cousin Joel Houghton in Bakersfield and lived their entire life there. She died on 31 Aug 1856. There was another in Bakersfield, a Dr. Oliver T. Houghton who married Amanda Bingham in Sep 1831. This Dr. Oliver Houghton was committed to a mental ward early 1860's. Both persons would be the right age to be a brother to Jonathan. It is possible if not probable that Oliver Cromwell Houghton was Jonathans father and Everett was his brother. In fact records support another brother, Elgin who married a Addie Parker 1898. A Howard Houghton was married to Ida Newman in 1902. It is unclear who he was other than he was there at the same time.

Jonathan shows up next in Bedford Township, Upper Canada where he married Nancy Gilchrist, a Canadian. Guess what, Everett also lived in Bedford exactly the same time. Assuming he was Jonathans brother we will address some facts known about him. He married Ann Jones in 1834 or 35. They had two children: George in 1836 and Sarah in 1839. No church records could be found in any of the local churches of Bedford. This is not surprising considering they probably wanted to keep their identity private to retain their US citizenship and/or they did not attend church. More search is needed. Maybe we will find some evidence someday. It could be that someone else has been able to find such information. The internet searches today enables us to occasional access data bases of other genealogy sites. Some of the information described already has been found on such sites with exactly the same dates and places regarding Jonathans family. In fact it appears that Jonathan and Nancy produced and raised 12 children. See information below.

NOTE by Derl Houghton: It has since been noted that Jonathans brother Oliver may not have been named Everett. The remainder of his siblings have been tentatively identified. The Houghton's that lived in or near where they lived may have been cousins by either Joseph (1770) brothers or distant cousins. It has been noted that a group of Houghton's moved to Canada the same time as Josephs family. Gary Houghton in Canada is researching some of that early history.

Note: Dave Reedy made a personal physical search for records in places associated with Jonathans movements to try and reconstruct the Houghton’s in Michigan and to see if through their records he could find where in Vermont Jonathan was born in 1803, or possibly who his parents were. He searched records in Grand Traverse County and was able to verify several facts. He was able to find records that establishes 3 children there for sure. They include Joseph, Oliver (believed to be named after Jonathan's brother Everett Oliver) and Elgin. The following were Elgin's children: Note: see comment above about Everett Oliver Houghton. However, Jonathan apparently had a brother named Oliver.

*Nancy's father Archibald Gilchrist ,died (abt.1810) when she was very young . Her grandfather Peter Gilchrist was a soldier in the "Loyal Rangers" during the American Revolution. He was a Loyalist and was the first settler to be given land free from the Crown of England at Ernestown, Ontario. Her mother Nancy Closson also came from Loyalist stock, as both her grandfather, Asa Landon, and her father, Caleb Closson had been branded as "notorious traitors" by the American government during the American Revolution. They both had been solders in the "Loyal Rangers". They received land grants from the crown in Augusta Township. Nancy's ancestry can be traced in the Family History Library back to the first settlers of Massachusetts (early 1600's ) . Some of the families being the Howlands ( Mayflower ), Williamsons, Clossons, and Landons. Her great-grandfather Duncan Gilchrist arrived from Scotland before 1739, and settled in Orange Co., N.Y. After her father died , her mother married for a 2nd time to Benjamin Ellsworth, he had arrived in South Crosby Township from Rutland County, Vermont about 1810 . They farmed in South Crosby Township on ( Lots 16 , conc. 2 as well as Lot 9 Conc. 4 ). The Joseph Houghton family also farmed in South Crosby Township ( Lot 12 Conc. 4 and 5 ). This would have been how Jonathan and Nancy met. Her mother and stepfather at first belonged to the Baptist Church, but about 1834 converted to Mormonism. They joined other Later-Day Saints from South Crosby (abt.1837 ) to search for a new haven in the American West.

* Family tradition said that the Houghton family came to Upper Canada about 1805, with other Vermont families who moved to this area at about this time . Many families were related by blood or marriage, or were close acquaintances. Joseph is listed as living in South Crosby Township, Johnstown District, Upper Canada, on Lot 12, Concession 4 and 5 in 1830 , this is the north shores of Sand Lake , near the present town of Elgin, Ontario . This location is mentioned in two letters written by Nellie Houghton to Riley Houghton in 1928. They also mention that great grandfather (Jonathan) moved to, and lived in Bedford Township, later in Westport, Ontario. The population of North and South Crosby Townships in 1830 was 145. The early 1800's are a genealogically difficult period for this area.

* 1828 -1829, Military Service, 2nd Regiment Leeds Militia.

* Between 1834 & 1854 Gary Houghton of Canada forwarded the following information that is very important in our family search for information on our early ancestors that migrated from Vermont to Canada. There is a lot of missing information but Gary has just discovered some of the missing pieces to this puzzle. He has been working very hard this summer doing research at Queens University Archives, Kingston Ontario. The university holds papers of the Tett Family of Newboro, Ontario. The family was headed by Benjamam Tett. The family operated general stores, lumber mills, and other businesses in and around North Crosby Township in Leeds County, Ontario. The "day books" from the Newboro and Bedford Mills general stores recorded sales and other transactions, especially those crediting or debiting the accounts of the local residents.. Joseph, Reuben, Oliver and Jonathan Houghton maintained accounts with the Tetts for several years. It is not clear how long they were there but the earliest book was dated 1834. In addition Gary discovered:

* Land records for Jonathan and Oliver in Bedford Township, Frontenac County. Jonathan owned part of lot 21 & 22 on conc 12. He bought it before 1834 and sold it by 1853 (They left for Illinois in 1854). Oliver owned part of lot 22, conc 12. He sold it in 1836. It appears that all of Jonathans children may have been born here. Gary also provided an early map of the area. See Photo below.

* 1854, Left Canada, moved family to Dekalb Co., IL. Jonathan and Nancy and all of the family except son Martin moved from Upper Canada to Dekalb Township, Dekalb Co., Illinois, prior to the American Civil War, Census records say 1855. They lived in this area until after the Civil War.

* It is stated in IL. Census, they arrived in Dekalb in1855 just prior to American Civil War.

* 1860, Illinois Census, Occupation: Farmer in Dekalb Township, Dekalb Co.

* (About 1866), The family split and Jonathan and Nancy along with some of their children and grandchildren moved to Grand Traverse County, Mayfield Township, Michigan, where Jonathan obtained a land patent for 160 Acres on 10 Feb 1874. However, only part of the family moved to Michigan, Listed in the 1870 Michigan census are Jonathan and Nancy, living with them are sons Oliver and Elgin and granddaughter Eliza Stephenson, daughter of Nella, who died in 1864. Also listed in the census is son Joseph and his wife Mary, with their sons, Sherman and Wyman; Philo Blackman and wife Nancy (Houghton) and family; also Justin Fowler and wife Melissa (Houghton) and family.

* 1870, Michigan Census , Farming in Mayfield Township, Grand Traverse Co.

Jonathan (1803) and wife Nancy and part of their family made their way to Dekalb Co., IL in 1855 where they settled. Records and Family-lore indicate they were probably farm laborers or sharecroppers. It is known that son Martin stayed in Canada. It appears that Jonathan's family lived in or around Mayfield. Some reference has also been made to Paradise. The following information is known about the family.

Ellenor 1825 Ellenor, age 30, came with Jonathan to Illinois with her husband Andrew Stephenson (d. 1904, Mayfield, MI.) and 5 of their children born in Canada. Two other children (Edward and Eliza) were born in Illinois. Census shows Andrew as a farm laborer. Ellenor died 28 Apr 1864, Mayfield, Dekalb, Co., IL. The oldest sons was 10-20 years of age. The youngest son Edward was 5. The baby, Eliza was 2 years old. It is not clear what happened to the boys but later Michigan census show Eliza in Jonathans household.

George 1827 George, age 28, came with Jonathan with his wife Betsey and two children born in Canada. Five more children were born in Illinois. George died 11 Jul 1895, Dekalb, IL. This indicates that George nor his family migrated to Michigan with Jonathan. In addition, son Archibald is shown as a farm laborer in Il. in 1870.

Melissa 1831 Melissa came with husband Justin Fowler at age 24 and one son (George), born in Canada West in 1853. Three children were born in Illinois. Another son Joseph Fowler was born in Grand Traverse Co., Michigan in 1872. This means that Melissa and Justin made the migration to Michigan with Jonathan. A land patent was issued to Melissa in Grand Traverse Co., MI.

Alonzo 1833 Alonzo came to Illinois with Jonathan at age 22. He never married and had no children. He volunteered for The Union at the beginning of the Civil War. Alonzo fought in the American civil war. Enlisted as private in 13th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Company F, enlisted 1 Jan 1864, Transferred on 1 Jan 1864 to the Illinois 56th Infantry Regiment, Company I , as a Private in the Union Army. His Home was referenced as Sycamore, IL. He was wounded and died in a confederate prison at Cahawba, Alabama on 23 Sep 1864. His Home was referenced as Sycamore, IL.

Elizabeth 1835 Elizabeth came to Illinois with Jonathan at age 20. She was single and later, 17 Feb 1856 married James Mc Michael in Dekalb, IL. They had 9 children, 5 were born in Illinois. They moved to Perry, Dallas Co., IL about 1865, prior to birth of Mary (1866) and subsequent children were born there. Elizabeth died 08 Jun 1908 in Perry, Dallas Co., IA. She is buried beside husband James at Violet Hill Cemetery, Perry, Dallas Co., IA.

Joseph 1837 Joseph came to Illinois with Jonathan at age 18. He enlisted in Union Army 14 Aug 1862, Co. K 105th Illinois Infantry. He fought entire length of Civil War. He was discharged in Washington, D.C.17 Jun 1865. In later years he was given a pension for a war-time disability. He married Mary Jane Duffy, age 21, 18 Feb 1866 after returning from The Civil War. He accompanied Jonathan in their migration to Mayfield, Michigan where they had 4 sons. He and his family later migrated to Texas.

Mary Ann 1839 Mary Ann came to Illinois with Jonathan at age 16. She married Daniel Walter Colton, 21 Mar 1858 in Dekalb, IL. It is not clear when or where they moved to Iowa but their two children were born there in 1874 and 1876 in Boone Co., IA., She died in Perry, Dallas Co., IA. and buried at Violet Hill Cemetery.

Nancy Ann 1843 Nancy came to Illinois with Jonathan at age 12. She married Philo Blackman, in Dekalb, IL, 26 Feb 1863. Their first child was born in Illinois. They accompanied Jonathan in their migration to Michigan. Six more children were born in Michigan. Nancy died in Cadillac, MI.

Jonathan 1844 Jonathan Jr. came to Illinois with Jonathan at age 11. Jonathan Jr. enlisted in the Union Army at Dekalb, Illinois, on November 8, 1863. He was 19 years old, and his occupation was listed as a farmer. He was mustered into Company C Co., 17th Illinois Calvary, as Sixth Corporal at Saint Charles, Illinois, on September 22, 1864. Discharged Nov 23 1865, Ft Leavenworth KS. He was granted a disability pension in later years. After returning from the war he married Rebecca Ann Russell, 28 Mar 1872 in Genoa, Kingston Twp., DeKalb Co. IL. A. and is buried there.

Oliver 1848 Oliver came to Illinois with Jonathan at age 6. He accompanied Jonathan in their migration to Michigan. Oliver married Alice Pease, 21 Aug 1870, in Grand Traverse Co. Michigan. They had three children. Only one, William survived to adulthood. Oliver died 1927 Grand Traverse Co., MI.

Derl Houghton: In his claim for a pension he stated that he had been disabled since 1874 with "inflammatory rheumatism", "chronic sore eyes, "paralysis", "deafness", and later heart trouble. One of the affidavits signed by a close associate claimed he had been unable to work a day for years. He was finally granted a pension of $6.00 a month. In 1904 he was given a raise to $8.00 a month.⁸

WASHINGTON, Jan. 18. -- An earnest appeal from Senator James E. Martine of New Jersey induced the Senate this morning to reconsider the bill granting $4,200 to Miss Alice V. Houghton, the young woman whose scalp was torn off two years ago in one of the tabulating machines in the Census Office, and promptly to repass the measure with the amount increased to $8,000.⁴
