Deceased Name: F.E. Houghton of Pittsfield, head cashier
Frederick E. Houghton, 81 of 28 Belvidere Ave., the retired head cashier of Pittsfield National Bank, died Thursday in Springside Nursing Home.

He worked at the bank for 50 years, first as a teller and then in the personal loan department. After retiring in 1977, he worked at Bank of Boston for three years.

Born and schooled in Bennington, Vt., he moved here in 1927. He was graduated from the Berkshire Business College, and was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He was a member and usher of the First United Methodist Church, and served on its administrative board. He was also a former member and treasurer of the Exchange Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Berkshire Museum, and the local Arthritis Fund.

He leaves his wife, the former Theda M. Towsley, and two cousins.

The funeral will be today at Wellington Funeral Home, with burial at the Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington. Calling hours will precede the funeral, and memorial contributions may be made to the church memorial fund.

NORTHFIELD FALLS - Mrs. John (Barboro) Bruno, 63, died Saturday mornlno In Central Vermont Hospital, Berlin, following a long Illness.
She was born In Cabot Aug. 4, 1914, daughter of George and Flossie (Morse) Houghton. She attended elementary school In Montpelier and high school In DeLand, Fla. In 1934 she was married to Clifton J. Alexander and her marriage to John Bruno took place In 1965.
Mrs. Bruno had worked for the American Cancer Society and was secretary to the dean of Norwich University in Northfleld for 20 years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of the United Church of Northfield.
Surviving are her husband; two sons, Gary Alexander of Berlin and Robert W. Alexander of Worcester; a daughter, Mrs. George (Jocaueline) Doney of Northfleld Falls; seven grandchildren; o sister, Mrs. Max (Thelma) Alexander of Berlin; and a half brother, Carroll Houghton of Lower Cabot.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the United Church of North field with the Rev. Alan Kelchner officiating. Burial will be In Northfleld Falls Cemetery later In the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to tl Northfield Ambulance Association, care of the town clerk, Northfield. Kin ston Funeral Home, Northfleld, charge of arrangements.

Deceased Name: Carl H. Houghton
ADAMANT - Carl H. Houghton, 82, of Martin Road, died Thursday, June 7, 2001 at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.

Born September 14, 1918 in Brattleboro, he was the son of George W. and Hazel E. (Howard) Houghton. He was educated in elementary school in Brattleboro and graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1936.

In 1940, he joined the 172nd Infantry Regiment, National Guard of Vermont and soon was inducted into federal service, receiving his training at Camp Blanding, Florida. He served as a truck mechanic in the Pacific Theatre until V.J. Day and had been on the USS Coolridge when it was sunk.

On Christmas Eve in 1947, he married the former Pearl Aldrich in the Trinity United Methodist Church Parsonage in Montpelier. They made their home in Adamant.

After moving to Montpelier in 1946, he was employed by the Maunsell Company, selling office equipment. He remained in sales for many years. In 1972, he became a dispatcher for the Vermont State Police, retiring in 1980. At that time, he began dispatching for the Barre City Police Department, retiring in 1985.

Mr. Houghton was a volunteer in the Central Vermont Adult of Basic Education Literacy Program and was involved with the 4H Garden Program. His interests were farming, horses, hunting, fishing, reading, writing, crossword puzzles, and daydreaming.

Besides his wife, Pearl Houghton of Adamant, survivors include his children, Linda J. McHugh and her husband, Paul of Candia, New Hampshire, David C. Houghton of Adamant, Lesley R. Duckett and her husband John of McIndoe Falls, Dan A. Houghton and his wife, Raquel of Eagle River, Alaska. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Caitlin Elizabeth and Nicholas Houghton both of Eagle River, Alaska and Carly Grey and Leah Joy Duckett; a twin sister, Carlena Howe and her husband, Wallace of Belchertown, Massachusetts; two nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Frederick Houghton and Graydon Houghton.

A Service Of Remembrance will be held today, June 9, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. There are no calling hours. Per his wishes cremation will take place.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Central Vermont Adult Basic Education Literacy Program, 18 North Main Street, Barre, 05641.⁶

Robert S. Houghton, 78, of 6 Wild Partridge Court died Friday at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

A native of St. Albans, Vt., he was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church, Franklin Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, and of the Owl's Club in St. Albans, Vt.

Surviving are wife, Mary B. Haughton; son, Robert S. Houghton Jr. of Greensboro; daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Kosicki of Concord, Mass., Mrs. Catherine Smith of Reading, Vt; sister, Mrs. H.S. Peyton of Princeton, N.J; seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27405.

WILLIAM J. HOUGHTON Jr.
EAST ARLINGTON - William J. Houghton Jr., 58, well-known resident here, died unexpectedly Monday noon. He had been employed for three years at the Hale Co. here and previously was with Sprague Electric Co. in Bennington.
Born in Wilmington Dec 1, 1908, he was a son of William W. and Lillian (Pero) Houghton. He was a member of Red Mountain Lodge F&AM of Arlington, Adoniran Chapter of Manchester and the Arlington Fish and Game Club.
Survivors are his wife, the former Mary Blyther; three sons, Dean W. Houghton of Poultney, James E. Houghton of Cincinnati, Ohio and Lee P. Houghton of Seattle, Wash; his father, William W. Houghton of East Arlington; a sister, Mrs. Edward Thompson of East Arlington, and a niece.
The funeral will be Thursday at 1:30 pm in the East Arlington Federated Church with the Rev. Granville Greenwold, pastor, officiating. Entombment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Arlington, and will be followed by burial in the family plot in the spring.
Friends may call at his home tonight and until the time of the service.
Red Mountain Lodge will conduct Masonic services Wednesday at 8 pm at the Houghton home. Members are requested to meet at 7:30 at the Temple.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Bennington County Heart Fund.
