BiographyHOUGHTON, Walter Elsworth Sr. was born June 5, 1899 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin the son of Elmer Elsworth Houghton and Jane Erickson. His father Elmer was also a member of Euclid Lodge. He attended the public schools in La Crosse and graduated from the La Crosse High School in 1917. Following graduation he was employed as a driver for the Pasteurized Milk Company in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He was drafted into the Army when World War I broke out and trained as an aircraft mechanic at Fort Grant. After the war he went to work as a tool and die maker for the Stamping & Tool Company in La Crosse. About 1924 he went into partnership with Durward H. Lewis and they operated an automobile repair shop in La Crosse under the name Houghton & Lewis. He married Esther V. Gilmore about 1923 and they were the parents of a son, Walter Elsworth Jr. who was born in 1924. Esther was a nurse who cared for Tuberculosis patients and she died September 3, 1925 after contracting the disease. Walter moved to Naperville about 1926, following Esther’s death, leaving Walter Jr. in the care of his father and mother in La Crosse. He was reunited with his son when Elmer and Jane Houghton moved to Naperville in 1931. From the time Walter moved to Naperville and he was reunited with his son, he would drive up to La Crosse every other weekend to visit him. He took a course in Drafting through the International Correspondence School and was employed in Naperville at the Kroehler Furniture Manufacturing Company first as a designer, then as Supervisor of Drafting. Peter Kroehler, the founder of The Kroehler Furniture Manufacturing Company sent Walter to the Art Institute in Chicago to learn about furniture design. Walter was the supervisor of all draftsmen in the company when he retired after 39 years with Kroehlers. He married Mabel Irene Rau August 21, 1951 in Oak Park, Illinois, with his son Walter Jr. and Walter’s wife Rosalie (nee Moore) as witnesses. He was raised a Master Mason November 30, 1926 and served as Master of the Lodge in 1933 and 1934. His name is engraved in the back of the Oriental Chair that is situated in the East, a testament to the esteem he was held in by his employer at the time, Delmar Leroy Kroehler (also a member of the Lodge). He served as Treasurer of the Lodge for 40 years from 1935 thru 1974 and was also a member of Euclid Chapter No. 13, Royal Arch Masons and served as High Priest in 1931. He also served on the Naperville Masonic Temple Association board and was responsible for the installation of the first chair lift. He would often pick up and take home members of the Lodge who could no longer drive, so that they could continue to attend meetings. He died August 20, 1984 in Naperville, DuPage County, Illinois and was buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin.

IN MEMORIAM
Mrs. Louella Houghton

Louella, only daughter of John and Mary Ann Klinger (sic), was born in the township of Lancaster, Grant County, Wisconsin, November 27, 1876. Early in life she was left motherless. December 26, 1892, she was united in marriage to George L Houghton of Beetown. Together they made a home near the village, where they thereafter resided. To the union were born four children: daughters Birdie (Mrs. Archie Bass) and Stella (Mrs. John (sic) Foster); and two sons Leonis (sic) and Kenneth. Less than two years ago Mr. Houghton passed suddenly into the Great Beyond.

The stricken wife bravely took up the burden laid down, remaining on the farm, and with the young son, Kenneth, doing the best she could, until advancing disease forced her to seek medical aid. After weeks of suffering, she entered the J.C. Doolittle hospital at Lancaster and submitted to an operation which was thought to be successful. However, complications appeared and the beloved mother passed away in this city, October 7, 1930, aged 53 years, ten months and ten days.

With the sons and daughters who mourn, there are three grandchildren, one half-brother: Roy Klinger, Schullsburg; two half-sisters: Mrs. Clara Gibson, Arthur, and Mrs. Bessie Cook, South Dakota; all of her lamented husband's relatives and many friends.

Mrs. Houghton was a woman of a quiet, unobtrusive manner, the key- note of whose life was absolute unselfishness and service to others. With never a thought of self, her time and energies were expended on her family and home until, broken in health, she was obliged to retire from activity. Her heart was filled with kindness and of her it can truly be said she had no enemies. She was a faithful and active member of the Beetown camp of Royal Neighbors of America, and a consistent member of the Church of Latter Day Saints. She will be sadly missed in the community.

The sorrow of her passing was typified in the beautiful floral offerings and the immense crowd that gathered to pay the last tribute of respect. In the village church at Beetown, with Rev George Willett, Methodist Episcopalian minister of Lancaster, officiating, services were held with burial by the side of her husband in the village cemetery. The Royal Neighbors gave their beautiful ritual at the grave.4

1940 Census1940Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co., WI, USA, age 34, 5 years of college, private practice, medical doctor4
DeathDec 22, 19692
BiographyWilliam J. Houghton, M.D. (1906-1969), a general surgeon at Milwaukee, was a member of the Council of the State Medical Society of Wisconsin from 1961-69. Just prior to this death, he furthered the endowment established by his brother.

In establishing an award for medical students, the Houghton brothers hoped to encourage young men and women to a greater appreciation of the need for physicians to work together through their county, state and national medical organizations and to achieve a well-rounded education, including the socio-economic as well as the scientific.3
Biography"William was born first, but John arrived in less than a year, so they were inseparable, practically twins. When Bill started school a year ahead of John, both boys were so distressed at the separation that their mother kept Bill back a year so they could attend together. They were highly competitive. John was ranked number one in state amateur tennis for several years, and Bill number two. As a doubles team, they were unbeatable at the McKinley Marina courts. Bill and his future bride, Dorothy, were prom king and queen at Marquette University in 1929.

After Marquette Medical School, John took additional training in surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee and the University of Pennsylvania Postgraduate School of Medicine. He chose to set up practice in Wisconsin Dells, which was a sleepy small town with barely one fudge stand at the time. During World War II, John tried numerous times to enlist, even going as far away as Chicago, but since he was the only doctor in a town, he was declared essential to his community. He did serve as a Lt. Commander in the Navy Reserves for many years. After the war and as the town grew, John's office expanded to ten doctors and a large staff, and the Dells Clinic served the population of a wide area.

Bill loved to work with his hands and developed that ability in five years of surgical apprenticeship with Fred Stratton, M.D. He continued to do a wide range of general surgery as well as general practice for thirty years. He also perfected his knack for drawing striking charcoal sketches of heads. He was a Lt. Commander in the Navy and led a medical team on a hospital ship in the South Pacific which, among other duties, treated hundreds of casualties from Saipan, the second bloodiest battle of the Pacific campaign.

Both were what today would be called "family physicians" and Bill also did surgery and obstetrics, which meant they made house calls and took phone calls around the clock. They were devoted to busy families and read the Journal of the American Medical Association, too, so their days were long and busy. They were competitive with their colleagues — always striving for excellence in diagnosis and treatment — and not infrequently they were competitive with each other, too. One's nose would be out of joint with the other, over some trivial slight, and they wouldn't speak with each other for months. But then they missed each other's familiar grousing and reminiscing so much that they set up a round of golf and dinner at the country club and were back on good terms. John hit the sweet spot on drives. Bill was surgical on chips and putts.

In all these respects, they were each complete physicians, but each not quite complete without the other. It was no accident that they thought of establishing the Houghton Award for one or several medical students who show high promise of becoming "complete physicians" themselves."3

Biography"John H. Houghton, M.D. (1907-1968), a general practitioner at Wisconsin Dells, was president of the State Medical Society of Wisconsin (now called the Wisconsin Medical Society) in 1965-66, and was a member of its Council, and Commission on Medical Care Plans. He was also a member of the Council on Health of the State of Wisconsin.

Shortly before his death, he endowed an award for deserving medical students who exhibit not only scholastic and scientific excellence, but interest as well in working together in a medically organized sense to achieve broad goals of public health"4
