BiographyMansfield Freeman was born in Waltham, Massachusetts on September 16, 1895, the son of Luther Freeman, a Methodist minister. He was one of original management group that started an insurance business in China that became the American International Group (AIG), a prominent scholar of Chinese philosophy, and a generous philanthropist. He died on November 17, 1992 at his farm in Greensboro, Vermont at the age of 97. He was also the founder of the Freeman Foundation. He was an alumnus of Wesleyan University in Connecticut, year of 1916. The Freeman Asian Scholarship was established at Wesleyan in his honor.

His published works include an introduction to and translation of Preservation of Learning by Yen Yuan, a 17th century Chinese philosopher. In 1990, he co-authored Tai Chen and Mencius: Explorations in Words and Meaning with Annping Chin, who is now a professor at Yale.

Mansfield Freeman (1895-1992), Class of 1916
by Patricia Stark

Mansfield Freeman made perhaps the most significant contribution to East Asian Studies at Wesleyan. He was born in Waltham, Massachusetts on September 16, 1895, the son of Luther Freeman, a Methodist minister who had served in Shanghai. His grandfather was John Freeman, Wesleyan 1855. Mansfield Freeman graduated with the class of 1916, and went to Tsing Hua College, Peking, China to teach English and Philosophy from 1919-1924. He married Mary Houghton in 1919, shortly before going to China. One son, Houghton "Buck" Freeman, Wesleyan class of 1943, was Wesleyan's first Japanese major. A second son died in infancy.

In 1924, Freeman began what would be a distinguished career in the world of insurance, becoming the Peking Manager of the Asia Life Insurance Co., later American Life Insurance Co. Over the next seventeen years, he would move up the ranks to become President of the U.S. Life Insurance Co. from 1941-1947. Freeman returned to the U.S., serving as vice-chairman of C.V. Starr and Co., Inc., in New York from 1947 until his retirement in 1960.

Freeman earned a reputation as a scholar of Chinese philosophy and as a philanthropist, chiefly in famine relief. In 1972, three decades after leaving China, he published an introduction to and translation of Preservation of Learning by Yen Yuan, a 17th century Chinese philosopher. In 1990, he co-authored Tai Chen and Mencius: Explorations in Words and Meaning with Ann-Ping Chin, visiting assistant professor of religion at Wesleyan.

Mansfield Freeman died on November 17, 1992 at his farm in Greensboro, Vermont. He was 97 years old. In the two decades before his death, Freeman helped develop the study of East Asia through gifts that expanded the libraries and established the Mansfield Freeman East Asian Studies Center and the Mansfield Freeman professorship in East Asian Studies at Wesleyan.

After his father's death, Buck Freeman established the Freeman Foundation for the purpose of strengthening the bonds of understanding between the United States and China. Most of the Foundation's annual giving of nearly $30 million goes to organizations that foster greater Asian-American appreciation and understanding.

Mansfield Freeman, a native of Alpine, New Jersey and a 1916 graduate of Wesleyan University, was a longtime resident of Asia and a distinguished scholar of Chinese philosophy. His publications include a translation of the by Yan Yuan (1635-1704): , Monumenta Serica Monograph, no. 16 (Los Angeles: Monumenta Serica at the University of California, 1972); an exhibition catalogue of historical photographs, documents, and other mementos that provide vivid glimpses into late Qing and early Republican Chinese history, co-authored with Phillip B. Wagoner, (Middletown, Conn.: Mansfield Freeman Center for East Asian Studies, Wesleyan University, 1989); and (New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1990), a translation of the by Dai Zhen (1724-1777), with a critical introduction by Ann-ping Chin and Mansfield Freeman.

After the death of Mansfield Freeman in 1992, the Freeman Foundation was established by his son Houghton “Buck” Freeman, who was born in Shanghai, graduated from Wesleyan University in 1943, and moved from Shanghai to Tokyo in 1949. The foundation is administered by members of the Freeman family: Houghton “Buck” Freeman, his wife Doreen, and their son, Graeme Freeman, a 1977 Wesleyan graduate.

"A very direct family connection ties the Freeman Foundation to the American International Group, the massive insurance company that's at the center of this month's global economic collapse.

One of the original founders of AIG was Mansfield Freeman, a former university teacher in China who in the early 1900s branched out into the insurance business. Freeman set up a charitable foundation funded in large part with AIG stock.

Mansfield Freeman had ties to Vermont; his son and grandson have lived part of the year in Stowe. They don't want to talk about the foundation's current health.

The Freeman Foundation reported assets in 2006 of $1.1 billion. It has literally helped maintain the architecture and the landscape of Vermont.

One of its main missions is to fund historic preservation and land conservation. The Preservation Trust of Vermont has been a major recipient. Paul Bruhn is executive director.3,4,5
