Brigadier General Junius H. Houghton

Junius H. Houghton was born in Titusville, Pa., on Aug. 21, 1892. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., with a Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned a second lieutenant of Infantry on June 13, 1916.

He was first assigned to the 19th Infantry at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, serving with that regiment until August 1917, when he transferred to San Diego, Calif., as a student officer at Rockwell Field. He transferred to Gerstner Field, La., in February 1918, and served there until the following August when he was named Officer in Charge of Pursuit Training at Carlstrom Field, Fla. He later served at Selfridge Field, Mich., for a short period, after which he assumed command of Scott Field, Ill., in January 1920.

His next assignment was to Fort Mills, Philippine Islands, where he subsequently became Squadron Adjutant, 2nd Squadron. He later moved to Camp Nichols, Philippines, and became Post Commanding Officer. He served in this capacity until October 1922 when he assumed command of the 28th Bombardment Squadron, Clark Field, Philippines. He next became Flight Commander, 3rd Pursuit Squadron, at the same post, serving until he returned to the United States in October 1923.

He then was assigned to the Rockwell Air Intermediate Depot, Rockwell Field, Calif., where he served as Depot Supply Officer until June 1925 when he was assigned to McCook Field, Ohio, as a student officer at the Air Service Engineering School. He graduated a year later when he returned to Rockwell Field as Engineering and Operations Officer and Commanding Officer, successively, of the Rockwell Air Intermediate Depot. From July 1929 to June 1933, he served as Commanding Officer of the Middletown Air Depot, Pa.

He was then ordered to the Panama Canal Zone where he served in several capacities with the 6th Composite Group until July 1934, when he was named Post and Group Executive at France Field. He became Post and Group Commander in July 1935 and served until the following December when he was designated to command the 19th Composite Wing at France Field, also commanding simultaneously the Panama Air Depot and the Post.

Returning to the United States, he proceeded to Patterson Field, Ohio, and served as Commanding Officer of the Fairfield Air Depot, later assuming additional duties of Commandant, Air Corps Weather School, at the same post. In July 1939 he was ordered to Barksdale Field, La., where he served as supply Officer and Base Executive Officer until April 1940, when he was detailed to the Air Corps Tactical School, Maxwell Field, Ala., as a student officer. Upon graduation the following June, he returned to Barksdale Field, La., to resume his duties as Base Executive Officer and later became Commanding Officer of the 35th Air Base Group, General Headquarters Air Force.

In March 1941 he assumed the duties of Commanding Officer, Jackson Army Air Base, Miss., and the following September he was named to command additionally the 1st Air Support Service Command at the same post. In April 1942 he transferred to New Orleans, La., where he became Commanding Officer of the Army Air Base there, and served in this capacity until September 1943, when he was given an unannounced assignment.

He is rated a command pilot, combat observer and aircraft observer.

PROMOTIONS
First lieutenant, July 1, 1916; transferred to the Cavalry to rank from July 1, 1916, and was promoted to captain on July 30, 1917. He was promoted to major (temporary) on July 30, 1918, and served in this grade until he reverted to his permanent rank of captain on Feb. 27, 1920. He transferred to the Air Service on July 1, 1920, and was promoted to major on June 30, 1927; lieutenant colonel (temporary), March 4, 1935; lieutenant colonel (permanent), Nov. 1, 1937; colonel (temporary), March 1, 1940; brigadier general (temporary), Sept. 4, 1944.
