--------- Wells, Richard (12 SEP 1828)

Richard Well was born in Courtland Co., N.Y., Sept. 12, 1828. He came to Wisconsin in 1855 and settled in Houghtonburg, where he lived for about twelve years. Later he removed to Marengo, Ill., where he lived for twenty years and then returned, this time settling near Humbird, Clark County, Wis., and has since made his home at this place. He was married Jan. 1, 1862 to Miss Marion Butler, who died Dec. 26, 1882. March 5, 1885 he was again married to Miss Lydia A. Van Woert, whom is still living. But one of three children remains to Mr. Wells, who has recently retired from his farm two miles north of town, and is now making his home in the village. Mr. Wells attributes the reawakening of Humbird to a change in the business methods incident to the business passing into new and more enterprising hands. He believes as long as Humbird offers the surrounding farmers a market for their produce that the village will continue its growth and prosperity, and can see no reason why this should not be. While we have a great deal to be thankful for Mr. Wells believes that if capital enough to establish some manufacturing business here, could be interested it would greatly contribute to the permanent wealth and growth of the village. He believes that in morals we are at least on a level with other towns of like character and population. The businessmen in their method of buying the farmers' produce and paying cash for it are on the right track and are following the course that will surely bring prosperity to them and to the town they are in. Mr. Wells recalls that while he was living in Houghtonburg, over forty years ago, he was one of the first to organize a Sunday school. On July 4, 1861, they had a picnic on the grounds just west of the south point of Humbird bluff. A fine poplar grove that then stood there was cleared for the occasion, which was long to be remembered by those present. Many different school were represented, people came from Hixton, Alma Center, Pole Grove, the Meek settlement, while a four horse load came all the way from Augusta. A Mr. Downes, lawyer, farmer and all around man of the early time, was orator of the day and Elihu S. Clark was marshal and master of ceremonies. After a repast such as only early settlers knew how to get up, the merry crowd adjourned to the speaker's stand. The exercises however, were broken up by a terrific storm which came up shortly afterwards. At this meeting Rev. I. E. Springer and wife sang the "Star Spangled Banner," which was doubtless the first time this soul inspiring song was heard in this part of the country.3

--------- Colgrove, Almira (15 OCT 1832 - 20 AUG 1918)

Almira Wells was born at Truxton, Cortland Co., N.Y., Oct. 15, 1832. When three years of age her parents moved to Medina Co., Ohio, and when eight years of age her parents moved to McHenry Co., Ill., where she lived until her marriage to Mr. Joshua L. Colgrove, on July 4, 1855. In Nov. 1869, they moved to this vicinity (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.), where they have since resided on the farm a half mile south of the village. Mrs. Colgrove came from a family of pioneers. Her parents journeyed from New York westward to Illinois with oxen and wagon, and after her marriage she came here with a team and wagon, each move being made long before the railroad had penetrated the undeveloped lands. Her early life, though one of hardship, was a happy one, and the happy spirit continued throughout the four score years and more of her days.

Mrs. Colgrove died about two o'clock Tuesday morning, Aug. 20, 1918. The end came peacefully after an illness of six and a half years duration, during part of which time she suffered greatly, but always bore the pain with patience and fortitude. She was converted at eighteen years of age and joined the Methodist Church. To her there was no dark valley; she awaited her summons in peace and like a weary child, fell asleep to awaken in a fairer clime and clasp glad hands with loved ones gone before. She leaves to mourn her death, he aged husband, one daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Rundle, and one sister, Mrs. Charlotte Brown of Marengo, Ill., who with her daughter Mrs. Laura Davis, and son, Milo Frink of Rockford, Ill., was present at the last sad rite.

The funeral services were held at her late home, under the plum trees that her hand had nurtured, at 2:00 o'clock on Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Robert Pow. A profusion of flowers covered her casket, kind tributes from neighbors and friends whom her pleasant manner and bright smile had cheered in days that are past. A fitting emblem that betokened a well spent life and a well grounded hope was a sheaf of ripened wheat emblematical of her life, which had borne its fruit and was now gathered into the harvest. Burial was in the Houghtonburg Cemetery, with Charles Houghton, Clarence Houghton, Mahlon Houghton, Oscar Richard, Henry Rundle and Gus Gower as pallbearers. The first five were relatives of the deceased and the latter a neighbor for half a century. The choir, composed of Mrs. C. H. Creviston, Miss Zella Brandstedter, W. F. Hein and R. A. Creviston, sang, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," "Jesus, Savior Pilot Me," "He Leadeth Me" and "Home of the Soul," some favorite hymns of Mrs. Colgrove's2

ObituaryDec 14, 1907Houghton, Caroline (12 MAR 1823 - 8 DEC 1907)
Death claimed another of the pioneers of Houghtonburg Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Caroline Houghton, who for over fifty years had lived on the farm which she helped claim from the wilderness, answered the final summons. For a number of years she had been a partial invalid, tenderly and lovingly cared for at the home of her son. During the last few weeks she was entirely helpless and suffered much from a paralytic stroke which occurred in November. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon and the remains were laid at rest in the family lot in the Houghtonburg Cemetery, Rev. Frank O. Hesse preaching the sermon. There was a large number of the old settlers present to offer their final tribute of respect to one who had suffered with them in the sorrows and shared with them in the hopes and joys of the pioneer days.
Caroline Walker was born in Green, N.Y., March 12, 1823. She was married to Oliver Houghton of the same place, March 12, 1846. Soon after they came to Wisconsin and settled in Walworth Co., near Lake Geneva.
In the spring of 1855 in company with a number of relatives and friends and their families, they came to Jackson Co. and secured the farm that has been their home for over fifty years.
To this union was born two children, Mrs. Estella Harvey, who died in Sept 1880, and I. C. Houghton, who lives on the old home farm in Houghtonburg. Mr. Houghton died in Jan. 1898, and since that time his companion has longed to be taken too. Mrs. Houghton was one of a family of seventeen children, all of who have lived to have families of their own. One brother, Mr. William Walker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, survives her. Aunt Caroline was converted when she was a young woman and united with the Baptist Church. Many will say she was a good woman, kind and cordial to all. Strangers, as well as friends and neighbors, were always welcome to her home as long as she was able to do for them.
On Nov. 25th she was stricken with paralysis, and suffered until near the end, death relieving her Dec. 8, 1907. We cannot wish her back. The funeral was held at her late home. Rev. Frank Hesse spoke from Phil. 1:4, words of comfort and encouragement to all who heard.
