James Houghton of Bishops Corners In Wading

               Only Few Feet From Shore

Went Out to Rock and Fell Off -- Sisters Struggle Frantically To Get Him
               Ashore

Theresa, 9 September 1918 -- James Houghton, the twelve-year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. James Houghton, who reside on a farm near Bishops Corners in
the Town of Antwerp, four miles from this village, lost his life by
drowning in Moon Lake at 6, Sunday evening, where he had gone to wade in
the waters with other members of the family. The accident took place right
near the shore and almost within touch of the others, but in spite of the
frantic efforts of the others in the party to save him, the boy was
               drowned.

Florence Cavanaugh, who was one of the party, gave a clear account of the
accident shortly after it occurred Sunday evening. Her story is as
               follows:

"I had gone up to spend the weekend with the Houghton family, and about 4
on Sunday, five of us, Harriet, Gertrude and Winifred Houghton, James
Houghton and myself, started out for a walk to Moon Lake, which is about a
mile and a half from the farm. We reached the lake on its eastern side,
near the Hunt and Webster farms, and decided to go into the water.

None of us could swim, but we expected to paddle around in the shallow
waters. After being in the water a little while, James said he guessed he
would go out to a rock that was a little way out from the shore. Soon we
heard cries of distress from him and saw the he needed help. We did not
think he was drowning, as his head was above the water all the time. His
three sisters rushed to his assistance and I started up the shore to where
I had seen a boat with fishermen, to come and help us. When I got back
with the fishermen the three sisters were struggling to get the brother
from the water and the fishermen got him ashore, but it was too late,
although they worked long to save him. We telephoned at once for Dr.
William Snell of this village who came but found life gone. I couldn't
think it possible that he was drowned, as I never saw his head under water
               once."

The body of the boy was taken at once to the home of his parents at
Bishops Corners. James was a member of the Methodist Sunday school in this
village. Besides his parents, he is survived by seven brothers and
sisters: Elmer, who resides in Potsdam [St. Lawrence, NY]; Mrs. Majorie
Lathan of Carthage [Wilna, NY]; William, who is attending a dental college
in Philadelphia [PA]; Gertrude, Harriet, Winifred and Eleanor, all at
home. Dr. Cheeseman A. Herrick, president of Girard College in
               Philadelphia, is an uncle.

The funeral will be held from the house Tuesday at 1 p.m. Rev. W. J.
Hancock of Alexandria Bay, formerly of Theresa, will officiate, assisted
by Rev. W. G. Atwell. Interment will be made in Oakwood Cemetery.

The fishermen referred to above were Theodore J. Gladd of 271 Ten Eyck
Street and William T. Kidder, of the Kidder Arcade Street barber shop
[Watertown, NY]. They went to Moon Lake Saturday in company with Benjamin
               O. Green of Curtis Street and Alphonse Conners of West Woodruff Street,
barbers, employed at the George Smith barber shop in the Paddock Arcade
[Watertown, NY], and M. H. Pinkerton of 211 Massey Avenue, representatives
of the R. L. Polk Company, city directories and gazetteers [Watertown,
               NY].

Mr. Gladd said today that he heard the boy and girls yelling but thought
they were playing in the water. He was alone in a boat and as he rowed
around the bend he saw that they were in trouble. He rowed hastily to the
spot about a half mile away.

"When I arrived at the scene," said Mr. Gladd, "I saw that one of the
girls, about 18 years of age, was in the water up to her mouth. She had
hold of her little brother who was submerged in 5 feet of water. The girl
would have drowned herself in a few minutes for she was nearly exhausted.
I grabbed hold of her and she caught the side of my boat and then I
succeeded in pulling the boy out.

But this time William Kidder and Mr. Pinkerton had reached the scene from
the other side of the lake. We put the boy on a large rock and Mr. Kidder
worked heroically for a half hour in an effort to resuscitate him but it
was useless. The boy was blue when I pulled him out, about 20 minutes
from the time he entered the water. I think that if the water had not been
so cold we might have saved his life.

When I started to go to the rescue I heard the girls yell for the water
wings. There is a very muddy bottom where they entered the water and the
boy waded out too far and sank in the mud."4
