Deceased Name: Gordon Houghton and Winsome Houghton: Husband, ill wife die in hospital shooting Murder-suicide probed as motive. San Diego police are investigating the apparent murder-suicide of an elderly couple who died in the same hospital room at Scripps Green in La Jolla yesterday morning.
The couple were identified as Gordon and Winsome Houghton of Spring Valley. Police said Gordon Houghton, 86, shot and killed himself after shooting Winsome Houghton, 95, who was bedridden and being treated in the hospital's cardiac unit. It appears Gordon Houghton was distraught over his wife's medical condition, but hospital officials said the family wants to keep the couple's personal details private. "The fact that it was an apparent murder-suicide is especially distressing, because we do try to work with families who are dealing with a difficult diagnosis," said Don Stanziano, a spokesman for Scripps Green Hospital. "Your heart really goes out to people in that scenario." A phone call to the couple's Spring Valley home was picked up by an answering machine. An elderly male voice says, "You have reached the home of Gordon and Winnie. ... Why not brighten up our day with a message? Thank you." The couple lived in a mobile home park for senior citizens off Jamacha Boulevard. Several bird feeders hang from their pale pink and white unit with a mountain view. A decorative green frog sits on a shelf on the front of the unit, and a small garden with rose bushes and a lemon tree dots the side yard. The park's assistant manager, Paulette Speck, had known the Houghtons for years. She said Winsome Houghton was very quiet and Gordon Houghton was friendly, often waving to her on his daily walks around the community. "He always looked like he was out of the '60s," Speck said, noting Gordon Houghton wore bell-bottom pants and tied his gray hair in a ponytail that stretched about halfway down his back. Speck said Winsome Houghton had been "sick for a while. I haven't seen her in a long, long time. "He took care of her while she was sick," Speck said. "He didn't seem like the kind of person who would do this." The shootings occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on the first floor of the hospital, homicide Lt. Jeff Sferra said. There were no other patients or hospital staff in the room at the time. Hospital workers heard gunshots, Sferra said. A nurse went to the room and found Gordon Houghton seated in a chair with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Next to him, on the bed, was his wife. A gun was nearby. Winsome Houghton was still alive, but she was struggling. "Hospital staff came to her assistance, but she passed away within a minute of the shooting," Sferra said. "At the time, we did not see any bullet wound and did not know how she died." A medical examiner's investigator discovered she had been shot. Police said there were no witnesses to the shooting. After the gunshots were heard, security and medical personnel were mobilized through a Code Blue signal indicating a medical emergency, said Johnny Hagerman, the hospital's marketing and communications director. Security officers blocked off the room, and police sent a homicide unit. Counselors were called to assist employees or others who needed help dealing with the incident, Hagerman said. The shots were heard by people visiting patients at the hospital. "I heard a pop-pop sound," said Nathan George, who was visiting a relative. "I know gunfire and this was gunfire. I didn't know what was going on." Visitor George Johnson said he heard the same sounds and then saw security personnel running toward an elevator. "It was unnerving," Johnson said. "In this day and age, you just don't know anymore when you hear these sounds." Hospitals are one of the few remaining public institutions that haven't increased security in recent years. At Scripps Green, for example, there are no metal detectors and security guards aren't armed. "We ask that visitors check in at the desk and get a badge. We try to keep track of who is coming and going, but there's a lot of people coming in and out of a hospital," said Stanziano, the hospital's spokesman. Steve Escoboza, CEO of the Hospital Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties, said he's not aware of a hospital in either county with metal detectors. "It's not feasible to have security devices in hospitals that you would see in airports and courthouses," Escoboza said. "Hospitals are large places with numerous entrances and exits. Mrs Swett had been in failing health for several months. Surviving are two sons, Girdler J. Swett Jr., a Staff Sergeant in the Engineer Corps at Shreveport, La., and Edwin Swett, who is with the General Electric Company at Lynn; also a brother, Sylvanus Poor, and a sister, Mrs Bertha Poor Fox, both of Andover.
