NoteThis may have been a "Charity burial" because there was a piece in a newspaper that said the things of George H. Houghton were to be auctioned off. He had a man who worked for him, George E. Snow, (Alice's Bother) who noted this. The illnesses they had and hospital bill was too much. Mr Houghton had been well to do with his jewelry shop but things got out of hand due to four children and even his own sickness.3
BiographyPriscilla Houghton Clark: She had been living in Lewiston while her brother, George Snow went to high school in Lewiston.
She was a young woman, keeping house for a doctor Small on Park Street in Lewiston. She was looking, before she was married, for a woman to hire her, who she called Mrs. H., a wealthy person needing a house keeper.
She said that her husband, George A. Houghton, had a jewelry shop. She even slept there one night when she came home from visiting in Maine and a man upstairs over the shop lent them a cot. He brother George Snow worked for George H. Houghton in his jewelry shop. This is in the letter I have.
I know George had a jewelry shop because Alice was always giving presents and sending things to people in La Grange, Maine. She spoke of going through his supply of jewelry. She also was always writing letters and called her husband Mr Houghton, after she married him. I think it was to distinguish one George from the other but she did it too, when her brother was not mentioned.4
