ObituaryJan 6, 2007Edward E. Houghton, 91; Carpenter and Machinist

By Joe Holley
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, January 6, 2007; Page B06

Edward Earl Houghton, a 91-year-old Clinton resident who died Dec. 29 of congestive heart failure at Southern Maryland Hospital Center, was a country boy his whole life. A gardener who raised tomatoes, squash, beans and cantaloupes as an adult, the young Mr. Houghton -- and his cat -- raised an orphan squirrel, the Washington Herald reported Sept. 13, 1926.

According to the article, complete with a line drawing of the barefoot, overalls-wearing 10-year-old, young Earl was strolling through the woods near his home when he heard whimpering cries coming from high in a tree. Climbing the tree, he found a squirrel's nest, with three tiny squirrels, their eyes unopened, near starvation.

Two died during the night, but the third was adopted by Mr. Houghton's cat, who had recently given birth to three kittens. Two had been given away, so the cat nursed her one remaining kitten -- and her adopted squirrel.

Mr. Houghton was born in Stafford County, Va., and grew up in the Storck area of the county. He was an infant when his father was killed in a shooting, and his mother moved to the District to find work. His grandparents raised him. They were proprietors of the Storck Store, and his grandfather was the postmaster, so his stock of country tales lasted a lifetime.

He graduated in 1934 from Falmouth High School, where he played football, baseball and basketball. A pitcher and catcher, he continued his baseball exploits as a young man on diamonds throughout Virginia.

Graduating from high school in the midst of the Depression, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped build roads and bridges in Shenandoah National Park near Luray, Va. His CCC carpentry skills came in handy. He did carpentry and part-time construction work until just a few years ago and even built his home in Clinton, with help from friends and neighbors in the venerable barn-raising tradition of Mr. Houghton's pioneer ancestors.

During World War II, Mr. Houghton was a civilian assigned to work at the U.S. Navy Yard in the District. He stayed in the District, working as a carpenter, until 1946, when he moved to Clinton. A few years later, he joined the Harry Diamond Laboratory of the Department of the Army, where he worked as a master machinist until his retirement in 1974.

Mr. Houghton was a member of Masonic Centennial Lodge No. 174 in Upper Marlboro and served as the lodge's worshipful master in 1958. A hunter and fisherman, he was a founder and president of the Singing Pines Hunt Club in Monterey, Va., and was active in the Falmouth High School Alumni Association.

Until recent years, he put in a half-acre garden every spring; one year he had 50 tomato plants. Everything he raised he gave away to friends and family, or he climbed aboard his tractor and drove through his Clinton neighborhood, handing out the bounty of his garden.

"He had the garden to give it away," a daughter said.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Clara Houghton of Clinton; two daughters, Joan Houghton of Oak Hill, Va., and Shirley Parker of Richmond; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.1
