My name is Marilyn Chambers and according to my research I am a descendant of Ralph Houghton and I also live in Lancaster, Ma. I received my copy of New England Ancestors today and read your notice. As your probably know Ralph was Lancaster's first Town Clerk, in the winter of 1969 I worked in the town clerk's office as a helper for about 3 months (I did not know that I was descended from Mr. Houghton at that time) and in 2003 I was the temporary assistant town clerk for 6 months, at which point I did know that I was a descendant of Mr. Houghton's which made the job a little more exciting. I now volunteer 4 hrs. a week in the Historical Commission's office, as I am a retired state employee. Recently our local community paper had many pictures of the house that Ralph built ca. 1685 when he moved back to Lancaster. When it was built it was in Lancaster, Lancaster was so big that over the years many towns were formed from parts of it. So the house is now located in the town of Harvard, Ma. and it is for sale for $649,000. I have never seen it and I have no idea where it is in Harvard, but hopefully once I have healed from my recent knee replacement surgery I can find out where it is and drive by.
My parents moved to Lancaster when I was a year old in 1942 and the house that I grew up in sits on land that was once owned by John Houghton.

Lucille Mae Houghton, 80, of Rockford joined the love of her life, George L. Houghton, at 1:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2005, sur-rounded by her family in the home of her son. Born Sept. 17, 1924, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Ethel Mae Foubert Dennis. She married George L. Houghton on July 31, 1948, in Marshalltown, Iowa; he died June 14, 1989, in Rockford. Lucille dedicated her life to loving and caring for many children. She was known as "Mamma Lou" at Goldie B. Floberg Center. She later moved her work to caring for many children into her own home. A philanthropist at heart, she always had an open door to anyone in need. She truly was a grandmother to many. Lucille enjoyed many passions in life: music and dancing, cooking for her family, her love of animals and her weekly bingo games. She will always be remembered for her immeasurable love and strength, her spunk, her sense of humor and her great love for her family. Lucille is survived by her children, Janice (John) Kirchner, Gary (Carol) Houghton, Diane (Jerry) Swanson, Loretta (Steve) Conti, George (Sue) Houghton Jr. and Terry (Trudy) Houghton, all of Rockford; four brothers; special brother, Leo Johnson; two sisters; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grand-children; and two great-great-grandchildren. Also predeceased by her parents; great-grandson, Steven Smith; and two sisters. The family would like to thank Dr. Willard Moore and VNA Hospice for the wonderful care they provided for our mother. Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14, in Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Ave., with the Rev. Lee Bennight officiating. Burial in Willwood Burial Park.
