On Sunday night last, Houghton was visited by about 22 disguised men, who gave him a terrible beating with hickory withes, and mutilated his body in a dastardly manner. He recognized 7 or 8 of his former comrades, and efforts are being made to arrest them.1

The Patchoque Poisoning Case

The case of Capt. Samuel N. Smith, who is charged with attempting to procure his wife's death by means of poison, administered by his servant girl, Annie Houghton, in October last, came up again yesterday before Justice Smith at Patchogue, Long Island. District Attorney Tuthill had a conversation with Capt. Smith, Mrs. Dayton, Annie Houghton, and Justice Smith, and said the examination would have to be adjourned till such time as Mrs. Smith was able to appear. He said the character of the poison had never been ascertained, and an analysis must be made. He reviewed the testimony of the girl Annie Houghton. Mrs Smith is still confined to her room at her father's house, No. 41 Tillary street, Brooklyn.1
