Ross Park

Morgan Road, Binghamton, N.Y.

The 90 acres of land was donated by Erastus Ross, a wealthy businessman whose only instructions were to build a park that all the community could enjoy. The electric trolleys in the area allowed easy access to the park. Other features of the park included roller coasters, swings, a bear exhibit and a carousel. Band concerts were a frequent summer event.

I believe the Park is part of the Binghamton Zoo or the other way around. The Zoo was created in 1875 but it is unknown when 'amusements' were set up.

Installed in 1920, this carousel was recently restored. The carousel features 60 jumping horses, 4-abreast; 2 chariots (one with monkeys) and an original 51-key Wurlitzer Military Band Organ. Park also features 5th oldest zoo in United States, the Discovery Center of the Southern Tier (unusual hands-on children's museum), the Carousel Exhibit, a playground, and a sheltered picnic area, all in a wooded setting.
