Robert Lee and Lydia Howell

My Great grandfather Robert Lee Howell was born in 1871 in Barbour County Alabama during reconstruction. There is little doubt as to who he is named after.

Bob as he was known to everyone was a farmer. Between his father Turner, Uncles Joseph and Washington and his grandmother Sarah there was at one point several hundred acres available for farming. But during the dark days of reconstruction nearly all small farmers struggled to make enough just to hang on to their land. The Howell land dwindled away completely by 1920.

Bob married Lydia Price in 1896 at age 25. They had 9 children between 1897 and 1920. My Grandfather John Henry Howell was the third child, born in 1903.

Lydia Price was born in 1878, the first born child to Robert Johnson Price and Amanda Emaline Belcher. They also lived in the Bakerhill area. Robert J. Price is buried in the Howell plot at Rocky Mount UMC, he passed away in 1933.

Bob lived his entire life in the Bakerhill area and passed away in 1947. Lydia lived until 1956. She passed away at the home of her daughter Marie in Montgomery. Both are buried at Rocky Mount UMC in Bakerhill.
