John Hancock1

John Hancock was the son of William Hancock and Isabella Atkinson.2,3
Marriage*circa 1689John Hancock married Mary Champney, daughter of Nathaniel Champney Sr. and Elizabeth (?), circa 1689.4
Death*26 February 1709/10John Hancock died on 26 February 1709/10 at Salem Co., New Jersey.1
Probate*22 March 1709/10His estate was probated on 22 March 1709/10 at Salem Co., New Jersey.4
NoteIt appears St. Leonard Shoreditch (London) records exist for the time period when William and Isabella would have married and when John was born.
Church Records:
St. Leonard
, Shoreditch High St.
Baptisms 1558-1901, Marriages 1558-1899, Burials 1558-1858 : LMA.
Note*Original purchasers and Early Settlement (contributed by Thomas Shourds)
The largest portion of this township was purchased from the proprietor by those who came to America from 1676 to 1683.
William Hancock 1000 (acres).
William Hancock arrived in this country in 1677, and took possession of his allotment, which was surveyed for him by Richard Hancock, who at that time was Fenwick's surveyor. William Hancock died in 1779 (should read 1679) and left two sons, John and William Hancock. He left all of his real estate to his widow, Isabella Hancock, and she subsequently sold one-half of the Hancock allotment to John Maddox, and he sold part of it to James Denn, and the balance to Jeremiah Powell in 1700. Jeremiah Powell sold some 300 acres, in 1733, to Edward Chambless Hancock.

Isabella Hancock left 500 acres to her eldest son, John Hancock. The latter built the bridge across Alloways Creek, opposite his property, about 1705. John Hancock died a young man. He left one son, William Hancock, who possessed more than common abilities. In addition to what he inherited he accumulated large landed estates in Elsinboro and Lower Penn's Neck, and was one of the leading politicians of the time, serving as a member of the legislature for twenty years in succession. He was killed in his own house by the British in 1778.2
Note*Several WorldConnect gedcoms indicate John was the son of Edward Hancock (this would be the brother of William who died in 1680 and is listed as living in Bath in William's will). They do not cite any sources beyond other gedcoms.
NoteWhile Cushing and Sheppard states that William and Isabella were the parents of John and William Hancock I am still skeptical since neither William's nor Isabella's will directly acknowledges either John or William as a son. So far I have no other source that confirms the relationship. It seems that they are clearly related, but how they are related is not proven.

The web page on the Hancock House at http://coastalheritagetrail.tripod.com/hancock_house.htm states that John Hancock was an indentured nephew which seems more consistent with the bequest in the will of Isabella Hancock and the fact the a son John is not even mentioned in the will of William.2
Immigration*25 October 1679He immigrated on 25 October 1679; from London England aboard the ship Willing Mind.5
Will*22 February 1709/10He left a will on 22 February 1709/10 at Salem Co., New Jersey.1
