NoteJohn Hooey/Howey of Oxford

We have not found direct evidence that links John Howey the immigrant to John Howey of Lehman, the ancestor of many of the subsequent Howey families of northeastern Pennsylvania. We have, however, discovered credible evidence that John Hooey of Oxford, NJ is that link.
The facts that must be dealt with are as follows:
     1) John of Lehman was born in NJ ca 1778, as was his wife, Mary VanWhy.
     2) John of Lehman lived most of his life, probably from early childhood, in what is now Lehman Township, PA. Historical records place him in that location for 60 years.
     3) John Howey of Lehman Township and Bowdewine Howey of Delaware Township were the ancestors of most of the Howey families of Pike and Monroe counties, and to some extent, those of Luzerne and Lackawanna counties.
     4) John Hooey enlisted in the 2nd NJ Regiment of the Continental Army in 1777 as a member of Captain Luce's Company which was recruited in Sussex County, NJ.
These facts place John Hooey in NJ at the time John of Lehman was born there and raise the question - where did John Hooey of Oxford come from?
The records for the period 1770-1780 reveal several land-holding Howey immigrants in northern NJ, but we have not found any record of a son who could have become John Hooey of Oxford. This admits the possibility that John Hooey came to NJ from somewhere else.
Of the Howey immigrants in northern NJ, only one routinely used the spelling variation 'Hooey', and that was Abraham Hooey of Oxford, Sussex County, NJ. We have found no record of a son named John in Abraham's family, but we have found a record of a nephew named John. This nephew was John Howey of Tinicum (b.1757), the son of John the immigrant and Jane Morrison.
In 1773 John the immigrant traveled to Oxford, NJ to prepare and witness the Will of his brother-in-law, Abraham Hooey of Oxford. In that same year John Hooey (or Howey?) appeared on a NJ list of 'Tax Rateables for Oxford, Sussex County, NJ', assessed for a tract of 4 acres. Since John of Tinicum was just 16 at this time, it is more likely that his father, John the Immigrant, was the property owner. We have not found a Deed describing the transaction but we can speculate that Abraham conveyed this land to John the immigrant as payment for services rendered. In contrast to his many land dealings in PA, this is the only property event we found for John the immigrant in NJ.
John Hooey of the 2nd NJ died in the winter encampment of the Continental Army in January, 1780. It appears that John Howey of Tinicum died with him because we have found no records of either after this date.
Further facts which lend credence to the conclusion that John Hooey of Oxford and John Howey of Tinicum is the same person are as follows.
Henry VanWye (Why) served in Captain Luce's Company of the 2nd NJ along with John Hooey, therefore it is quite likely they knew each other then and perhaps earlier in Oxford. In the 1780's Henry VanWhy moved from Oxford to Lower Smithfield, PA which adjoined Delaware Township, home of Bowdwine Howey. We can be confident that this is the Henry VanWye of the 2nd NJ because he named a son Israel Shreve VanWhy after the commanding officer of the regiment. Some 20 years later, in about 1805 John Howey of Lehman married Marry VanWhy, daughter of Henry.
Jacob Howey, brother of John of Tinicum, moved to Oxford, NJ before 1783. We have found no record of land ownership by Jacob so we speculate he took up residence on the 4 acre tract his deceased brother had lived on. Jacob married Sarah Dobson in Oxford in 1783.
Given all of the foregoing, we conclude that John of Tinicum moved to Oxford, NJ about 1773 where he took up residence on his father's (John the immigrant) 4 acre tract. There he went to work on the plantation of his Uncle Abraham and had become known as John Hooey by the time he enlisted in 1777. During this period he fathered a son, born ca 1778, who became John of Lehman.
We have found no direct evidence of a marriage or birth that would confirm the foregoing but we believe it is a correct interpretation of the facts we have, and must stand unless research unearths facts to contradict it. Moreover, analysis of all the possible antecedents of John of Lehman has produced no plausible parentage other than John Hooey/Howey of Oxford/Tinicum
Source citations for the above events as well as additional information can be found in the notes for John the immigrant, John of Lehman, and Bowdewine Howey.
Details of John Hooey's military service are given below.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR SERVICE
OF
JOHN OF OXFORD

The following is an excerpt from an e-mail-- Barbara Howey Parks to E. Howey on 7/21/2003--.
ÙS ÙRÙRÙRThe packet [I received] contained photocopies of the Company Muster Roll and Pay Roll Books showing John Hooey's service in the Rev. The information contained showed:      John Hooey enlisted on 12 Feb 1777 in Sussex, New Jersey for the duration of the war. He was a private in Captain Henry Luse's Co., in the 2nd Battalion of New Jersey Forces, commanded by Col. Israel Shreve. (This company was designated at various times as Capt. Henry Luse's, Capt. William Helms', 3rd and 2nd Company.) The entries are in a book copied from original rolls in the Office of Army Accounts under the Paymaster General, U.S.A., who was authorized by Congress, July 4, 1783, to settle and finally adjust all accounts whatsoever between the United States and the officers and soldiers of the American army. (Journal American Congress, Vol. 4, page 237) -R. & P., 436, 786 John Hooeys accounts are in Volume 4, page 87.)      Under the item entitled Casualties it reads: 'missg (missing?) Dec, 15, 1777,Must'd (Mustered?) Jany, Ùt78 Dead Jany 16, Ùt80.
Company Muster Rolls for July and Aug, 1778, the Roll was dated 'Elizabeth Town, SussexÙT.
In November and December of '78 and January, February, and March of Ùt79 the Company Rolls were dated Newark.      The April and May of '79 Rolls were dated in Easton.      The June of '79 Roll was dated in Wyoming. (?)      The July, August and September Rolls were again in Easton.      The October of ''79 Roll was dated at Scotch Plains (Nov 8).      The November and December Rolls were simply dated 'Camp, Jan 21, 1780'.      The January and February Rolls were dated 'Jersey Camp, Mar 4, 1780'.      The Muster Rolls show that he was sick ÙRÙR.. hospitalized during December 1777.      He apparently never obtained a rank above private.      His pay was 6 and 2/3 dolls. per month.      He died on January 16, 1780.      So, apparently John served continuously from Feb. of 1777 until his death in January of 1780.ÙTÙT.1

    The information contained showed:

John Hooey enlisted on 12 Feb 1777 in Sussex, New Jersey for the duration of the war. He was a private in Captain Henry Luse's Co., in the 2nd Battalion of New Jersey Forces, commanded by Col. Israel Shreve. (This company was designated at various times as Capt. Henry Luse's, Capt. William Helms', 3rd and 2nd Company.)
The entries are in a book copied from original rolls in the Office of Army Accounts under the Paymaster General, U.S.A., who was authorized by Congress, July 4, 1783, to settle and finally adjust all accounts whatsoever between the United States and the officers and soldiers of the American army.
    (Journal American Congress, Vol. 4, page 237) -R. & P., 436, 786
John Hooeys accounts are in Volume 4, page 87.

Under the item entitled Casualties it reads:
    "missg (missing?) Dec, 15, 1777,Must'd (Mustered?) Jany, 78 Dead Jany 16, 80.
On the Company Muster Rolls for July and Aug, 1778, the Roll was dated "Elizabeth Town, Sussex.
In November and December of '78 and January , February, and March of ''79 the Company Rolls were dated Newark.
The April and May of '79 Rolls were dated in Easton .
TheJune of '79 Roll was dated in Wyoming.(?)
TheJuly, August and September Rolls were again in Easton.
The October of ''79 Roll was dated at Scotch Plains (Nov 8).
The November and December Rolls were simply dated "Camp, Jan 21, 1780".
The January and February Rolls were dated "Jersey Camp, Mar 4, 1780".

The Muster Rolls show that he was sick several times and hospitalized during December 1777.
He apparently never obtained a rank above private.
His pay was 6 and 2/3 dolls. per month.
He died on January 16, 1780.

So, apparently John served continuously from Feb. of 1777 until his death in January of 1780.
