"Solomon Hoxsie was himself a leading light in Friends affairs, an overseer,
often entrusted with important matters. In 1769, Solomon Hoxsie presented a
paper to the Meeting (Friends) in which he gave an account that he "suffered
one of another Society to keep company with and also to marry his Brother John
Hoxsie's daughter whom he brought up, which conduct he freely condemned and desired
Friends to pass it by, which paper he is desired to read at the end of First
Day Meeting where he attends and return it to our next Monthly Meeting."
To which Caroline Hazard commented in her book, "Narragansett Friends Meeting
Records." "It makes a curious picture, a man universally respected
and honored, often charged with the grave concerns of the Meeting, standing up
at the end of worship and reading his own condemnation for allowing his niece
to flurry as she wished." The reader is urged to read the book mentioned
above, and also another book by Miss Hazard, "Anchors of Tradition,"
which contains a story about Solomon Hoxsie and his work among the Friends."
