James HUBBARD #25

Samuel HUBBARD #28

p. 147-148

HUBBARD, Elias (s. of James the emigrant), b. 11 Apr 1673; m. 15 Dec 1699, Jannetje, widow of Jan Barentse Van Driest.  Resided in Gravesend and a farmer.  No trace of his descendants. Signed his name "Elias Hubbard"

HUBBARD, Elias (s. of Samuel), m. 29 Sep 1723, Femmetje, dau of Lourans Ditmars of Flh; d. 1 Dec 1731.  Issue: Ariaentje, b. 7 Apr 1731, m. Adriaen Voorhies of Flh, & d. 23 Jul 1810; and Cornelia (twin with Ariaentje, b. 7 Apr 1731, m. 23 Sep 1748, Isaac Denyse.  Signed his name "Elias Hubbard Juner."

HUBBARD, James, the common ancestor of the Kings Co. & NJ HUBBARDS, emigrated from Langham in the county of Rutland, England.  Came to Gravesend with Lady Mody and others, who left New England to enjoy their peculiar religious views, where they settled about 1643; m. 1st Martha ____; m. 2d, 31 Dec 1664, Elizabeth BAILIES or BAYLIS.  Magistrate of Gravesend in 1645, 51, 53, 63, & 64; and schout fiscall of Gravesend in 1650.  On Gov. Kieft's patent of Gravesend in 1645, having a plantation-lot granted in 1646.  With Baster & Grover rebelled, in 1655, against the Dutch authorities, who had sheltered and protected them, for which he was imprisoned.  Was a representative of Gravesend in the Hempstead convention of 1665.  Had a tract of 176 acres surveyed for him at the head of the Fresh Kil on S.I., as per p. 206 of Vol I of Land Papers.  Issue: James, b. 10 Dec 1665; Rebecca, b. 28 Apr 1667; Elizabeth, b. 3 Jun 1669; John, b. 20 Mar 1670; Elias, b. 11 Apr 1673; (sup) Hannah, wh married Myndert Johnson and Samuel, b. 3 May 1676.  Signed his name "Js Hubbard."

The following curious entry is copied from Lib 3 of the Gravesend rec.:  "The record of mee James Hubbard: To Certifie mine or any other of his brethren William: John: Henry & Margret wth him selve ye younges of leaven sonns & Dafters: yet butt five known here, of our father Henry Hubbard & our mother Margrett: of ye Towne of Langham: in ye Countye of Ruttland yeaman: stands upon ye record of ye regester to be ye 123: Generation: As I have receved by letters in ye yeare 1669: & my Chilldren wth ye Rest of my Bretherens chilldren are ye 124: Generation: wch I James Hubbard of Gravesend on ye wester end of long Ile land desired To have Recorded on ye Townes Regester of Gravesend: for his Chilldren To add & to have Respect unto: for there better knowledge of There Relations in ye parts of Urope ye land of England in Cass of There Travells To Those parts."

Allowing 30 years for a generation, this would carry the genealogy of the family back over 4000 years, or to about the time of Noah's flood. If there is any foundation for the 123 generations, the inference would be that the ancestors of the Hubbard's were Jews, for they alone through the Bible trace from Noah to the days of our Saviour, and are the only race who could be supposed to make a pretence of tracing from that period to

the present time.  There was a James HUBBARD, ag. 27, who emigrated from London to St. Christopher'[s in 1635, as per p. 80 of Hotten's Emigrants.

HUBBARD, James (son of James), b. 10 Dec 1665; m. Rachel ---; d. 1723.  On cen of Gravesend of 1698, which town he left and settled at Middletown, Monmouth Co., NJ, where he bought land of ___ Stout, and where he died, his will being dated 30 Jan 1718/19; probated 16 Jan 1723/24; and rec in Lib A., p 284, office of Secretary of State, NJ.  Issue: James (an imbecile), b. 1686, d. 1764, leaving no issue; and Mary, b. about 1689, m. John Wall of Middletwon, NJ, who had children, Williampie, Rachel & Mary Wall.

HUBBARD, John (son of James the emigrant), b. 20 Mar 1670.  Resided in Gravesend in 1695. No trace of his descendants.

Timothy Hubbard/Dorothy Rowley CT/NY c1765-1850, By Dixie Hansen - Jan 7, 2001

Categories: Connecticut, New York State

It appears that I may have some faulty research to sort through on Timothy Hubbard and Dorothy Rowley.  They're both from Middlesex Co., CT.  (b. 1760s).  They moved to Windham, Greene Co., NY and later to Mt. Moris, Livingston Co. NY.

I've done significant research on more recent generations of this family and am just now starting to track them back.  I was told by a prior researcher (who otherwise has been pretty reliable) that Dorothy was the daughter of Ebenezer Rowley and Suan Anable and that Timothy Rowley was the son of Timothy Rowley Sr. and Sarah Bailey.  I thought I had an easy connection back to George Hubbard and Elizabeth Watts.

Dorothy's history may prove out... but I'm more than a tas suspicious of Timothy's connection to Timothy Sr.  as there is other evidence that there is second Timothy Hubbard, Jr. floating around with better credentials!

In fact... I can find published records of the marriage of both Timothy's with their respective spouses within a year of each other.   The other one (who married a Miss Thomas) has a "Jr." attached to his name.  "Mine" doesn't.   I haven't ordered the film yet to see if parents are listed in the original church records - but they weren't in the published resource.

Has anyone got Timothy and Dorothy's connection to their ancestral family sorted out yet. Wanna save me the sweat?  If so, I'd love to hear from you!

Sincerely,

Dixie Hansen

Story of Reba Lamoine Hubbard Rocker, By   - Jun 11, 2000

Categories: New York State

This following story was graciously given me by Janet Rocker Marmon, daughter of Reba.

Reba Lamoine Rocker Hubbard was born May 8, 1906 in Fowlerville, Town of Lyonsdale, New York, the 3rd child of George and Cassie Homan Hubbard. She lived most of her young life with her parents, brother Guy and sister Doris, in the house on the corner of the Lyons Falls road in the Town of Lyonsdale. The house is currently owned and occupied by Helen Gydesen. It is located across the road from the Jones district #3 one room school house. Reba, Guy and Doris and the other neighborhood children attended grades one through six at this little school. It is presently being refurbished as a local historical site of interest by the area Boy Scout troop.

Reba used to go tobogganing with Carol, Hester and Betty Hone at their home near the Merriam estate which was owned by the girl's parents, Fred and Augusta (Gussie) Hone. The Hone girls and Ingals attended the little school on the corner with Reba. Mrs. Hones' brother, Lyman Merriam, had three daughters, Sally, Florence and Kathleen. These girls did not attend the Jones district school with the other children. Reba remembers when Fred Hone built a long low pig barn and the big white house they lived in off the Lyons Falls road near the Merriam estate. The Hones property is now owned and occupied by C.Tebsherany.

The big barn, built by Lyman R Lyon in 1860 belonged to the Hones. Reba used to play "hide and seek" in the big barn with Ingals Fisher, son of Clarence and Rachel Fisher, the Hone girls, and Katie Shepherd (VanAlstine). This huge barn was famed by Walter D Edmonds's novel, "The Big Barn".

Reba used to walk two miles over to the Lyons Falls high school and to the Presbyterian Church which she joined when she was 12 years old. Her grandfather, Francis "Frank" Homan had a boat on the Black River canal. Her father, George Hubbard, tended locks at Lyons Falls and lived in the lock house. Then he moved to the house on the Lyons Falls road around 1902. He helped build the Teal house and the one next to it on Laura St. (the Teal house where Bob and Jean Poore Teal lived when they were first married). Geroge went to Dolgeville, (beyond Brantingham) and ran a hotel there. George and Cassie Homan Hubbard's first child, Harold, was accidently shot and killed by his 8 year old cousin Merwin Todd, when he was 4 years old. This tragedy occured at the hotel while the boys were playing outside. They found a loaded rifle which had been left in a buggy by one of the guests. They took in summer boarders at the hotel. Some people went there for their health and Cassie Hubbard contracted T.B. and nearly died. She was in the first stages and was able to be cured. George was a guide for hunters and fishermen about 8 years. He also worked for Fred Hone for a time as a caretaker. He and his family lived in the tenant house which burned down some time after they lived there.

Reba worked for Mrs. Florence Merriam at the Merriam house on the Lyons Falls road. At 16 years of age she went to work for Augusta Hone as a waitress. At 17 years of age she went to work as a nanny for Rachel Fisher, wife of Clarence Fisher, when they adopted Helena, who was just a baby. Ingals Fisher, their son, died of strep throat while in the army of Ww II. He was captain of a negro regiment. Fishers never knew he was sick. They just received word that he had died of strep throat. He had a closed casket.

Reba married Frederick W Rocker on July 3, 1926 at the Forest Presbyterian manse at Lyons Falls. They had 4 children, Helena, Janet, Darlene and Frederick Jr. They lived in Port Leyden most of their married life. Reba passed away at age 86 on Jan 13, 1993.

MARRIAGES

HUBBARD New York marriages, 1600-1784, By Coralynn Brown - Jan 24, 2000

Categories: New York State

Below is what is offered for the surname Hubbard.  (That doesn't mean those were the only marriages performed in the state, however.  Since these records were local, the ones that reached the state level got recorded there, and many did not.)

Jeremiah Hubbard m Rebecca Brush on 31 Jan 1682.

Samuel Hubbard m Antje Emens on 12 Mar 1774.

Hannah Hubbard m Hendrick Henderson on 16 May 1770.

John Hubbard m Bethiah Horton on 21 Sept 1782.

Ariantje Hubbard m Adriaen Voorhees on Sept 21, 1782.

Ariantje Hubbard m Jacobus Lake on 28 Oct 1756.

Bernardus Hubbard m Neeltje Lake on 16 Nov 1756.

Catherine Hubbard m Peter Sierget(or Surget) on 7 Apr 1769.

Edward Hubbard m Martha Turner on 2 Mar 1670.

John Hubbard m Mary Tyrrel on 1 Jul 1762.

John Hubbard m Sarah Skilman(or Shilman) on 13 Oct 1762.

These are not in alphabetical or chronological order.

This stuff I printed out has more info about what volume and pg etc. which I won't bore you with unless one of these people becomes a research target for you.

Obviously, considering the number of Hubbards in NY, this is far from complete.

Some of the given names of the above are rather unique and if you have them in your lineage you will not confuse them with the more common given names.  I wonder where they got these, however; they certainly do not sound English!!

HUBBARD Cemetary, Wayne County New York, By Arthur  M Hubbard - Mar 25, 2000

Categories: Cemeteries, New York State

Found this at the link at the bottom of this post. The entire cemetary listing can be found there. I tried to attach a map of New York State with Wayne County highlited but this MyFamilysite wound not accept it. If anyone knows how to do that let me know. Wayne CO. is located in N/W New York bordering lake Ontario to the N. and the finger lakes to the S. In any event the pre and post words I included I suspect came from the headstones at the cemetary.

<br>Thomas HUBBARD. -- The distinguished Thomas HUBBARD, whose obituary you have re-published in the REGISTER, Vol 47, p 480, from the Massachusetts Gazette, was a great-grandson of Richard HUBBARD of Salisbury, concerning whose emigration an entertaining tradition is preserved in Eaton's history of Candia.  His wife was probably a daughter of the patriarchal Richard Goodale as Mr. Goodale had a daughter of that name, and their son Richard (the Hon. Mr. Hubbard's grandfather) spoke in two deed of "my grandfather Mr. Richard Goodale."  Any doubt on this point arises from the fact that the wife of the younger Richard HUBBARD was a granddaughter of Mr. Goodale, nee Martha Allen, sister of Peter Ayer's wife, both being daughters of Mr. William Allen, whose wife was Ann Goodale.

<br>The second Richard HUBBARD was a blacksmith, and lived in Salisbury most of his lifel. During a short period, including the years 1697-1700, his residence was in Boston.  He was born in 1645 and lived to an old age in Salisbury.  In 1718 he executed an interesting conveyance to four of his grandchildren:

<br>"Richard HUBBARD, son of my son John HUBBARD

<br>"Richard Langdon, son of my daughter Mary Langdon.

<br>"Thomas HUBBARD, son of my son Joseph HUBBARD.

<br>"Hubbard Stevens, son of my daughter Dorothy Stevens."

<br>The land conveyed was in Amesbury, and in the year 1727, Messrs. Langdon and Thomas HUBBARD joined in a deed conveying away their half interest.  Both were residents of Boston at the time, one described as a merchant and the other as a gentleman, and their wives Thankful & Mary joined to release their rights of dower.

<br>John HUBBARD early settled in Kingston, NH, and the son of Richard was grandfather of Dr. John HUBBARD, governor of Main. A sister of Richard, named Anna, married Rev. William Tompson of Scarborough, and was blessed with three children - William Tompson, Esq. of Scarborough; John, the urbane Parson Tompson of South Berwick; and Anna, wife of Joseph Gerrish, who numbered among her grandchildren, Governor Goodwin of New Hampshire.

<br>Mary Langdon was the progenitor of the distinguished Portsmouth family of the name.

<br>Joseph HUBBARD was a blacksmith in Boston. The records show his marriage, Aug 4, 1698, to Thankful Brown of Sudbury, and the birth of their distinguished son in 1702.

Postcard collection fr NY (MONROE County), By Coralynn Brown - Jul 25, 2000

Categories: Hubbard Gleanings!!!, New York

Received this yesterday:

Jocelyn A. Hubbard says:

I have a very large postcard collection which has come down through the family to my husband, George Thompson Hubbard, Jr.

All these postcards have a tie-in to Monroe County, NY.

Many postcards are signed with a first name, or initials only, but many others have a full name signature, some addresses, and other interesting family information.  Over the next few months I will begin posting this information to the list.  ([email protected])

Since I have hundreds and hundreds of these postcards, it is nearly impossible to do lookups until I get them into a database.  At present, I am getting them into archival sleeves.

I will be setting the database up as follows:

Card # (for my own information to make future look-ups easier)

To:  (name & address)

From:

Postmark:

Picture on Front: (sometimes give clue about sender)

Message:  "......."

Notes about card:  (this would include any relationship between the sender & receiver, and if known, any dates and other information about sender, receiver and any one else mentioned in card.)

Each email I send to the list will have the subject "Postcards" followed by the surname of the sender, to the surnames of receivers, ie:

Postcards GREEN>HUBBARD, THOMPSON, WRIGHT

That way, if you are not interested you can simply delete the message without reading through it.

If anyone else has ideas of anything else that should be included, please write to me OFFlist.

Hopefully, some of you may find something of value in this project.

Coralynn's comment:  PLEASE do not email her right now, asking if she has a postcard from one of your ancestors.  She is getting these organized so she can post to the NYMONROE-L on Rootsweb, a mailing list.  You could sign up for that particular mailing list, I suppose.  Her email address:  <[email protected]>

but only email her if you have a constructive suggestion, NOT to ask her for lookups.
