Eliza Frances Hurt & Tazewell Helms

ELIZA FRANCES HURT was born May 11, 1845 in Franklin County, Virginia.   She married (1) William A. Menefee, Jr., son of William and Jane Menefee, on  December 20, 1869 . He was born about 1836 and died between 1870 and 1874.  Eliza then married (2) Tazewell Helms, son of John Helms and Susannah Cox of Franklin County, Virginia, on October 12, 1874.  Eliza's second husband served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Confederate Army in the 21st Virginia  Cavalry under Captian Armistead O. Dobyns.

The family of Eliza Frances Hurt and Tazewell Helms resided at "Green Level" plantation and the colonial home which is located on Rt. 919 on the lovely rolling lands about five miles south of Boones Mill.  The will of Eliza Frances Hurt bequeathed the property to their son, Col. George Willis (G. W.) Helms.

Children of ELIZA HURT and TAZEWELL HELMS are:

i. COL. GEORGE WILLIS HELMS.

ii. ESTELLA HELMS m. WILSON.

iii. CLYDE HELMS m. ANGLIN.  

iv. MARGARET ANABEL HELMS.

Eliza Frances and Tazewell Helms were also responsible for raising her sister, Media Hurt Hartwell's, two sons, George Ira Hartwell and Harry A. Hartwell, following their mother's death in 1882.
