John Osborn

The father of John Osborn may be a John Osborn who was born circa 1591 and was probably the John Osborne of Weymouth. (1) Undocumented research states that John Osborne, who died in 1686, came from England in 1644 and settled in Windsor, Connecticut.

John Osborn is listed among the early settlers of Windsor, Connecticut, along with Bygod Eggleston, Richard Oldage, and Thomas Dibble. (2) John Osborn was died on October 27, 1686 at Windsor. He married Ann Oldage on May 19, 1645 (1644?) in Windsor, (3) the only daughter of Richard Oldage (see Eggleston history). She was born circa 1625 in Dorchester, England (undocumented), and died on August 28, 1689 in Windsor.

John’s will was dated October 14, 1686: (4)

I John Osborn sen. of Windsor do make this my last Will & Testament: I give to my wife Ann Osborn my personal and real Estate during her natural life, except that parcell of Land only that I now improve at Namerick which I give to my son John, Within a year and a day after my decease. I give to my son Samuel my now dwelling house and Lands adjoyning, after mine and my wive’s decease, he paying to his brothers and sisters such legacies as hereinafter shall be expressed. I give to my son Nathaniel that part of my house lott west side of Connecticut River, east of the Town Street, bounded North by John Gaylord Jr., south by Robert Watson, East by Isaac Pinney’s Meadow, after the decease of my wife and myself. I give to my gr. son Daniel Prior my Wood lott above Namerick, bounded south by Jacob Drake, and œ10. My son Samuel to pay his four sisters, Mary, Hanna, Ester & Sarah, œ10 to Each. Samuel to pay my gr. child Hana Shadduck œ5 in case she abide with my wife until 18 years of age or till my wives decease. I constitute my wife Ann sole Executrix, and desire Jacob Drake, Daniel Hayden & Nathaniel Gaylord to be Overseers. John X Osborn sen. Witness: Jacob Drake, Mary Drake. Ann (Oldage) Osborn died just three years later. Her 1689 probate abstract lists John Osborn, age 43 years, Nathaniel Osborn age 36, Mary Owen, Samuel Osborn age 26, Hester Owen age 22, Sarah Wright age 20, Hannah Egleston age 24. (5) The inventory was taken by Samuel Grant and Isaac Morgan. Administrators were her sons John & Samuel Osborn. Nathaniel Bissell and Job Drake, son of John Drake, were to distribute the estate.

According to Savage and Parsons, John and Ann’s children were: (6) John, born January 10, 1645/6; Ann, January 15, 1647/8; Nathaniel, March 10, 1649/50; Samuel, July 25, 1652, died soon; Mary, April 16, 1655; Hannah, December 18, 1657; Samuel, again, May 8, 1660 (Parsons has 1668); Esther, August 9, 1662; Isaac, September 28, 1664, died at 9 years (possibly November 24, 1673); and Sarah, February 8, 1666/7. He died October 27, 1686, when they (John and Ann) were living beside John, Nathaniel, and Samuel, and all the daughters except Ann, who married November 12, 1663, Humphrey Prior, and had left two sons; Mary, married October 22, 1674, Josiah Owen; Hannah, married Elias Shadduck, and next, married March 6, 1678, Benjamin Eggleston.

The living children were listed in John’s will and in Ann’s probate. John also listed two grandchildren.

• John was listed in John’s will and Ann’s probate. His age in Ann’s probate agrees with Savage’s data. See below.

• Ann was not listed in either John’s will or Ann’s probate. Her death date is said to be September 29, 1682. Her son, Daniel Prior was listed in John’s will which indicates that Ann had died leaving one living son. See below.

• Nathaniel was born on March 10, 1649 and died after October 27, 1686. Nathaniel may have died on October 25, 1689 in Windsor, Connecticut. Nathaniel was listed in John’s will and Ann’s probate. In Ann’s probate he was listed as age 36. This would yield a different birth date than Savage’s data. Nathaniel, March 10, 1650 versus 1653.

• Samuel was not listed in John’s will. He had died in infancy.

• Mary was born on April 16, 1655 and died after October 27, 1686 (possibly August 6, 1689). She married Josiah (Joshua?) Owen on October 22, 1674. Josiah was born on September 8, 1651. Josiah was said to be from Simsbury. According to Savage, their children were Josiah, born June 6, 1675; Isaac, born June 4, 1678 (but Stiles, 731, is very different); Mary, February 15, 1679/80; and Elizabeth. Parsons did not list the daughter Elizabeth. Mary was listed in John’s will and Ann’s probate. In Ann’s probate she was listed as Mary Owen. Undocumented data states that she married (1) Joseph Owen and (2) Josiah (Joshua) Owen October 22, 1674.

• Hannah was listed in John’s will and Ann’s probate. She was named as Hanna Eggleston in Ann’s probate, age 24 (age a probable error). Savage has her birth date as December 18, 1657 versus 1665 in Ann’s probate. John’s will names grand daughter Hana Shadduck (daughter of Hannah Eggleston and Elias Shaddock). This probably confirms Hannah’s earlier marriage to Shaddock before her marriage to Benjamin Eggleston and possibly there was only one living child from Hannah’s first marriage. John’s will stated that granddaughter Hana would receive her inheritance “in case she abide with my wife until 18 years of age or till my wives decease.” This seems to indicate that where granddaughter Hana was to live was not determined in 1686, or perhaps John wanted to ensure that she was taken care of. Elias Shaddock, who married Hannah Osborn in November 1675, died in May 1676, probably before granddaughter Hana’s birth. However, her mother Hannah had married Eggleston in 1678. Why or if Hannah’s daughter Hana had not been taken into their household is not known. See below.

• Samuel was born on May 8, 1660 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut and died after October 27, 1686 (possibly June 21, 1736). Samuel was listed in John’s will and Ann’s probate. He was listed as age 26 in Ann’s probate, yielding a birth date of 1663 that conflicts with Savage’s birth date of May 8, 1660. He married (1) Mary _?_. She died on August 3, 1690. He then married (2) Abigail _?_. His children were Samuel Jr. and Rebecca.

  Undocumented research states that Samuel married twice. He married (1) Rebecca Denslow and (2) Mary Brooks on November 14, 1683 in Windsor. Eggleston & McBroom state that Samuel married (1) Mary Brooks in 1683 and had Samuel Jr. and Rebecca and (2) Rebecca Denslow. They state that Rebecca Denslow was the daughter of Bygod’s daughter Mary/March/Mercy who married John Denslow in 1655. Samuel’s sister Hannah, who married Benjamin Eggleston (Bygod’s son), had a daughter Abigail Eggleston who married Samuel Osborn, Jr. in May 1704, son of Samuel Sr. and Mary Brooks. Samuel Jr. married (2) or (3) Hannah Phelps. Hannah Phelps was the sister of Mary Phelps who married Samuel III. Samuel’s grandson, Samuel III married Mary Phelps, the sister of his future mother-in-law. Benjamin Eggleston, son of Bygod, named a Samuel Osborn of Windsor in his will. He may be this Samuel.

• Esther Osborn was born on August 9, 1662. Undocumented research states that she married Joseph Owen on August 9, 1682 in Windham, Connecticut. Esther was listed in John’s will. She may be the Hester, age 22, in Ann’s probate. Savage has her birth date as August 9, 1662 but the probate puts her birth date in 1667.

• Isaac was not mentioned in John’s will. He had died in 1673.

• Sarah Osborn was born on February 8, 1666. She is said to have married Joseph Wright, son of Lieutenant Abel Wright and Martha Ketcherel, at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, on December 29, 1687 (undocumented). Sarah was listed in John’s will and Ann’s probate. She was named as Sarah Wright, age 20, in Ann’s probate. Savage listed her birth date as February 8, 1667, but the probate has her birth in 1669. Their children were: Mindwell, born September 24, 1688, died circa 1693; Joseph Jr, born October 14, 1690 at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts; Sarah, born November 20, 1692; Benjamin, born November 11, 1694, died 1712; Mindwell, born March 4, 1697; Martha, born June 16, 1699; Mary, born September 20, 1702; and Rachel, born December 4, 1706.

John Osborn, Jr.

John Osborn, Jr. (John¹) was born on January 10, 1645/6 (7) and died circa 1705. He is sometimes referred to as Sgt. John Osborn. He married, first, Abigail Eggleston on October 14, 1669, the daughter of Bygod Eggleston. Abigail was born June 12, 1648 in Windsor, Connecticut, (8) and died on July 30, 1689. According to Savage, their children were: (9) John, born August 25, 1670; the family removed to Windsor and there had Abigail, March 2, 1671/2; Mindwell, January 2, 1673/4; Ann, January 1675/6; Mary, January 1677/8; Hannah, June 14, 1680; Sarah, August 12, 1682, both died young; Elizabeth December 19, 1684; Martha, April 10, 1687. These children were probably those of John and his second wife, Martha Ellsworth: twin sons born and died February 3, 1692; Isaac, June 6, 1694. Family tradition says he removed to Long Island there had Mary (again), February 10, 1696; and Jacob, January 4, 1698. The family resided in Westfield and Windsor, Connecticut and then Long Island, New York. Parsons only lists Abigail, Mindwell, Ann and Mary as children of John and Abigail. However these may be only the children born in Windsor.

After Abigail’s death in 1689, Sgt. John Osborn married Martha Ellsworth, daughter of Sgt. Josiah Ellsworth and Elizabeth Holcombe, circa 1690. (10) By going to original court records, Justine Harwood Laquer was able to prove the identity of Martha Ellsworth, second wife of John Osborn of Windsor, Connecticut. There was a “not so veiled accusation by Martha’s stepson of collusion to conceal assets of [John Osborn’s] estate,” and Martha’s brothers were called in to testify.

• John Osborn III was born on August 25, 1670, Westfield, Middlesex County, Connecticut and died on March 5, 1740. He married Elizabeth Gibson on December 7, 1696. John and Elizabeth had the following children: (11) Benjamin, John IV, Joseph, and Ezekiel.

• Benjamin married Priscilla Hulse and had Benjamin Jr., Thomas, Zebedee (died from a fall from an “ungoverned horse”), Priscilla, Thomas, Elizabeth, Thomas.

• John IV married Sarah Stiles and had John, John, Sarah, Rachel, Ann, John, Miriam. Joseph married Martha Stiles (daughter of Lt. John Stiles and Mary Osborn) and had Martha, Joseph, Mindwell, David, Abel, Abel, Dorcas, Magaret. John Osborn IV was said to be the strongest man in New England in his day. A famous athlete came from Virginia to challenge him, but he declined. The man persisted and John finally accepted the challenge. However, he first led the man to his cider press. John took a long drink from a barrel and invited his challenger to do the same. The man was amazed and said that he would never drink with the devil, since no man could, of his own unaided strength, do what John had done. He returned to Virginia without the combat he wanted.

• Ezekiel married Abigail Watson and had Abigail, Jerusha, Sarah, Ezekiel Jr., Zubina, Agigail, Jerusha, Ruth, Lucretia, Emeline.

• Abigail Osborn was born on March 2, 1671, Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut.

• Mindwell Osborn was born on January 2, 1673, Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut and married Isaac Pease on June 9, 1691. Isaac was born on July 15, 1672.

• Ann Osborn was born in January 1675, Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut.

• Mary Osborn was born in January 1677, Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. She may have married Lt. John Stiles. A child of Lt. John Stiles and Mary Osborn was the Martha Stiles who married Joseph Osborn, son of John Osborn III and grandson of Abigail Eggleston and John Osborn, Jr. They would have been cousins.

• Hannah Osborn was born on June 14, 1680, Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut and died on December 25, 1689.

• Sarah Osborn was born on August 12, 1682, Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut and died on May 8, 1692.

• Elizabeth Osborn was born on December 19, 1684, Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut and died in 1761. She may have married Lt. Isaac Bissell, who was born on September 22, 1682, Windsor, Hartford County, son of Lt. Thomas Bissell and Abigail Moore. Elizabeth and Isaac had ten children: Elizabeth, Isaac, Abigail, Sarah, Joel, Benjamin, Roger, George, Joseph, and Zebulon. Zebulon Bissell was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and was taken prisoner at Fort Washington. He died on the way home after being poisoned by the British before a prisoner exchange. (12)

• Martha Osborn was born on April 10, 1687, Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. She married Ensign John Loomis.

• Twin sons born and died on February 3, 1692.

• Isaac Osborn was born on June 6, 1694.

• Mary Osborn was born on February 10, 1696.

• Jacob Osborn, the son of John Jr. and Martha Ellsworth may have had a daughter Abigail. This Abigail married Zebedee Osborn, Jacob’s cousin. Zebedee was the grandson of John Osborn III.

Ann Osborn

Ann Osborn (John¹) was born on January 15, 1647 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut (13) and may have died on September 29, 1682 in Windsor (she died before her father). She married Humphrey Prior on November 12, 1663 in Windsor, (14) son of Thomas Prior. Humphrey was born circa 1642 in Windsor and died in 1719 in Windsor. Their children were John, born on February 14, 1665 in Windsor and Daniel, born on December 18, 1667. Daniel married Sarah Eggleston on February 9, 1692/93 in Middleton, Connecticut. (15) Sarah was born October 26, 1670 in Middletown and died on April 6, 1706 in Middletown, the daughter of Samuel Eggleston and a granddaughter of Bygod. According to Eggleston & McBroom, Daniel and Sarah lived in Windsor in 1694 and Middleton from 1698 on. This conflicts with the marriage location information above.

Ann Osborn is said to have died in 1682 so she was not listed in her father John’s will or her mother Ann’s probate. Her son, Daniel Prior was listed in John’s will which indicates that Ann had died leaving one living son. Since her son John was not listed, he may have died before 1686 when his grandfather died.

Savage sheds some light on Sarah Eggleston and Daniel Prior. (16) He stated that Daniel was the son of Humphrey Prior who married Ann Osborn, daughter of John Osborn, on November 12, 1663. Humphrey and Ann had sons John born February 14, 1665 and Daniel born December 18, 1667. Daniel Prior and Sarah Eggleston had a daughter Sarah born March 4, 1694. Humphrey and Ann’s son, John Prior’s children: Ann born March 31, 1690; Mary born March 6, 1692, and John born May 16, 1695.

Hannah Osborn

Hannah Osborn was (John¹) born on December 18, 1657 and died after October 27, 1686. She married (17) (1) Elias Shadduck/Shaddock on November 26, 1675, who died on May 26, 1676. She married (2) Benjamin Eggleston on March 6, 1678, who died in 1729.

Savage stated that Hannah, daughter of John Osborn, married Elias Shadduck or Chaddock. (18) The only child of Hannah and Elias is said to have been Hannah who married Benjamin West on March 14, 1692. (19) A granddaughter Hana Shadduck was named in Hannah’s father’s will. Manwaring states: (20) ‘Elias Shadduck’ died at Windsor 26 May 1676 leaving a wife and one child, and John Osborn left a will dated 27 October 1686 naming daughter ‘Hanna’ and ‘my grandchild Hana Shadduck.’ Benjamin West was living in Enfield, Connecticut in 1686, and after his marriage to Hannah, moved to Middletown. (21) Benjamin West died circa 1733 in Middletown and Hannah was administrator of his estate. (22) The probate named Abigail as a minor daughter. The children of Benjamin and Hannah, all born in Middletown, may have been: Hannah, born May 24, 1693; Benjamin, born June 1, 1696; Mary, born April 1, 1699; and Abigail, born July 23, 1716.

After Elias Shadduck died on May 26, 1676, Hannah married Benjamin Eggleston. Savage listed the children of Hannah and Benjamin Eggleston: Mary, born October 2, 1680; Sarah, 1683; Abigail, 1685; Benjamin, 1687; Dorothy, 1690; Joseph, 1695; and Esther, 1697.

The will of Benjamin Eggleston (dated December 16, 1729): I, Benjamin Eglestone of Windsor, do make and ordain this my last will and testament: Although I have given my children portions according to my ability formerly, yet I think it wisdom to make this following small addition to prevent future trouble: Imprimis. I give unto my son-in-law, Samuel Osbond of Windsor, to complete his deceased wife’s portion, 5 shillings. I give unto my daughter Marcy Miller 5 shillings. I give unto my daughter Sarah Bliss 5 shillings. I give unto my daughter Dorothy West L5. I give unto my daughter Esther Osbond, of Enfield, 5 shillings. i give unto my son Benjamin Eglestone the remainder of my goods and chattells whatsoever, who is obliged to take care and honourably to maintain the testator as long as he liveth. And my son, Benjamin Eglestone I constitute my sole executor. Benjamin X Egleston, LS. Witness: Thomas Stoughton, Joseph Haraper, Robert Thompson. Hannah and Benjamin’s children are of interest due to their marriages to Osborns. They were: (23)

• Mary/Marcy Eggleston was born on October 2, 1680 and died after 1729. She married _?_ Miles or Miller (Miller in will).

• Sarah Eggleston was born on April 20, 1683 and married (1) Jonathan Bliss on March 7, 1702, son of Samuel Bliss and Mary Leonard. She possibly married (2) the son of George Kilbourne and Abigail Atwood. Note there is a Kilbourne connection in the Dibble line. The children of Sarah and Jonathan Bliss were Sarah and Jonathan Jr.

• Abigail Eggleston was born on April 11, 1685 and married Samuel Osborn Jr. in May 1704. Samuel Jr. was the son of Samuel Osborn and Mary Brooks (see above). Abigail and Samuel Osborn Jr. had two children. Abigail died before 1729 according to her father’s will.

• Benjamin Eggleston married Mary Dibble. Benjamin may have been the only son and thus was appointed executor. (see Dibble and Eggleston histories).

• Dorothy Eggleston was born on February 28, 1689 and died after 1729. She married _?_ West, possibly Samuel West.

• Hester/Esther Eggleston was born on July 10, 1699 and married _?_ Osborn. They resided in Enfield, Connecticut in 1729. Mostly undocumented, it is said that Hester/Ester married Samuel Osborn, of Enfield, Connecticut on May 13, 1719. He was born in 1697. One researcher provides some information. (24) A James Osborn who died in 1676 and married Joyce Smith, had a son Samuel Osborn, born February 1, 1663. This Samuel married (1) Unknown, (2) Sarah Patch on September 7, 1693 at Enfield, (3) Mary Brooks on November 14, 1688 at Windsor. Child of Samuel and Sarah Patch was Samuel Jr. born December 1, 1694. He married Esther Egelston on May 13, 1719 at Enfield, Hartford County, Massachusetts. Esther may have married (2) John Bush on March 7, 1750/1 at Enfield. Hester’s children were: Hannah Osborn, died Sep 1744, Enfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts; Samuel Osborn, born May 8, 1724, Enfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts; Esther Osborn, born October 24, 1726 Enfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. A Samuel Osborn is said to have resided in Enfield from 1684 to 1691. It is said that Sarah Patch Osborn married Thomas Hale on December 17, 1713.
