Caleb Winget

Caleb Winget was born circa 1777 (tombstone) possibly in New Jersey and died on May 17, 1842 in Sodus Township, Wayne County, New York. He was buried at South Sodus Cemetery, Sodus Township, age 65. (1) Caleb married Mary Farris circa 1805. (2) Mary was born circa 1782 in New Jersey (census) (3) and died on October 20, 1872 in Mundy Township, Genesee County, Michigan. (4) She was buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Caleb and Mary were in New York by circa 1806 (son Reuben’s birth) and in Phelps, Ontario County, New York by 1810 with three sons, one daughter and possibly two relatives (census). Ten years later there were four sons and four daughters (1820 census). An early deed record places Caleb in Phelps in April 1819. (5), (6) They remained in Phelps for nearly twenty years. Caleb and Mary sold property to David and Thomas Beeman for $400 in 1828. (7) By 1830 the family had moved about thirty miles north to Sodus Township, close to the shore of Lake Ontario, where Caleb died.

Census information indicates that Caleb and Mary had eight or more children, probably at least four daughters. Their known children were Aaron, Reuben, Caleb B., and David – also possibly Dyantha S./Diantha J., (8) Jacob and Peter L. Proposed children of Caleb and Mary: (9)

Wayne County, New York, 1885.

Sodus Township is in Wayne County, which was originally part of Ontario and Seneca Counties, becoming a separate county on April 11, 1823. (11) Some of Wayne County’s early arrivals were veterans of the Revolution who came to take up claims in the Military Tract. In 1824 Sodus was described as township in the northeast corner of Ontario County. (12) “The town of Sodus was formed in January of 1789. It comprises the northeast corner of the old ‘District of Sodus.’ The District of Sodus was made up of what are now the towns of Sodus, Lyons, Arcadia, Marion, Walworth, Ontario and Williamson. . . .” (13)

During the 1800s when Caleb and his family were living in western New York, a religious fervor swept across western New York. Shakers, Spiritualists, Mormons and others found a place to develop or propagate their beliefs. Genesee Country, originally nearly all of western New York, had more than its share of cults and true believers as wave after wave of religious revivals spread across the region during America’s Second Great Awakening, thus earning it the name, “The Burned Over District.” This part of New York became famous for its history of revivalism, radicalism, communitarian experiments. . . . (14)

After Caleb’s death in 1842, Mary, age sixty, moved to the town of Huron in Wayne County, New York about 12 miles east of Sodus across the Bay. She probably left Sodus Township to live with her son David. She was living with David in 1850, age 68, and could not read or write. She was involved in several land sales in Huron, New York from 1849 to 1858. (15) Whether this is property she purchased after Caleb’s death, or property Caleb owned at the time of his death is not known. In 1860 North Huron contained two churches, a saw and grist mill, and 40 houses. South Huron (Huron post office) had one church, a townhouse, and twenty houses. (16)

Mary, who was to live into her 90s, remained with her son David’s family. In 1860 she was in Genesee County, Michigan with David and his family. David moved to Michigan in 1854 and Mary probably came with him or soon after. She was still living with David, at age 85, in 1870.

Undocumented information states that Mary’s father was James Ferris, born circa 1763 in New Jersey and died on September 25, 1844 at age 81 years in Sodus Township, Wayne County, New York. James’ wife was Charity (maiden name unknown) who was born circa 1760 in New Jersey and died on September 12, 1847 at age 87 years. They were both buried in the South Sodus Cemetery: (17) James Ferris, born abt 1763, died 25 Sept. 1844 age 81y & Wife Charity born abt 1760 and died 12 Sept. 1847 age 87y. They could be the parents of Mary, or a relative. James and Charity were found in Ontario County, New York as early as 1817 and up to the 1840 census. James purchased land there in 1817 and 1835. (18) In the 1820 and 1830 censuses, James was enumerated on the same page as Caleb Winget. They were probably neighbors. By 1840 he was enumerated just after Caleb. James may have been living next door to his daughter when he was between 60 and 70 years old.

Reuben Winget

Reuben Winget was born on May 17, 1806 in New York and died on May 27, 1859 in Mundy Township, Genesee County, Michigan, age 53. (19) Reuben was buried in Odell Cemetery, Mundy Township, Genesee County. (20) Also buried there are a Sarah S. and John Winget (John may be Reuben’s son, Sarah S. Harrison’s wife). Reuben married Sarah Graves (21) circa 1833 in New York (first child born circa 1834). Sarah was born circa 1813 in New York. Sarah’s father was born in New York, her mother in Canada. (22) The only Graves in Sodus where presumably Reuben was living when he married Sarah Graves was a Stephen Graves enumerated on the page after Reuben’s father, Caleb in the 1830 census. This Stephen was again found in 1840 in Sodus. Stephen Graves was born circa between 1790 and 1800 (census), and could be the father of Sarah, a brother or relative of Sarah.

Their known children were Harrison, Mary Jane, Monroe, Sarah, Reuben, (23) George and John. In 1850 in Genesee County, Michigan we find Ruben Winget, age 44, with his wife Sarah, age 37, and their five children – Harrison (age 16, born New York), Mary (age 10) Monroe (age 8), Sarah (age 5) and Ruben (age 1). All except Harrison were born in Michigan and all the children old enough were in school. Ruben came to Michigan early, before his brother David. There is a land entry for Mundy Township of 40 acres for Reuben Winget of Wayne County, New York in 1837, (24) shortly after Michigan became a state, and we find him in Genesee County in the 1840 census. In 1840 there are two adult males in the household, perhaps his brother Caleb B. came to Michigan with Reuben. In the 1840 census there were two daughters under age 5. One was probably our Mary Jane, the other must have been a daughter who died before the 1850 census. In Ellis’ History of Genesee County, Reuben was listed on a list of voters for November 1840 and as a resident tax-payer in 1844. In 1850 Reuben was a farmer in Mundy Township with a farm valued at $1,000. The Wingets were active in their community. Reuben served as a Commissioner of Highways in 1848 and was a township Treasurer in 1853. (25) His brother David was a Justice of the Peace in 1860 and Caleb B. was a Commissioner of Highways in 1853. Reuben and Caleb were found in Genesee in 1854. (26)

In the 1860 census, Sarah, now listing herself as Sally, is a widow, with the surname Wright. Her husband had died only the year before, so it is unlikely that she had remarried so quickly and she was listed as head of household (no husband listed). She was listed again as Winget on the actual 1870 census page, though the census index lists her as Wright. Sally Ann was now 49 and managing the farm. Our Mary Jane was still living at home, now age 20. Harrison had left home, but Monroe (age 18), Sally Ann (age 15), Ruben (age 12) were still at home. There were two brothers born since 1850, George and John. The family consistently kept their children in school past eighth grade, Monroe, Sally Ann, Rubin and George were all in school. Although Harrison had left home, he may still have been helping his mother with the farm. She was again listed as Sally in 1870 with no husband listed. Daughter Sally Ann was still at home. Son Reuben was now 21 and helping his mother on the farm. George was still in school. Farming nearby was Sally’s son Harrison, who was married with three children. By 1880, Sally Ann listed herself as a widow, now age 67, living with her unmarried son George. Sally Ann stated her father was born in New York and her mother in Canada. Living nearby was Harrison and his family. Reuben had married and moved to Saginaw. This same year her son Monroe married a Priscilla Marsh.

The children of Reuben and Sarah:

Aaron Winget

Aaron Winget was born on May 6, 1818 and died on September 27, 1885. (37) He married a Lovina York who was born in 1818 and died in 1901. He was buried in York Settlement Cemetery along with his wife, daughter Achsah (1843-1918), son Benjamin (a Reverend, 1845-1921) and George W. (died May 6, 1863). Aaron also had a daughter, Lovilla, born in May 1848. He resided in Wayne County, New York all his life, first in Rose, then in Huron (1850-1880 censuses). In 1867 he was listed as living in Huron, a farmer with 72 acres. (38) The Winget family were Methodists and Aaron was a trustee of the church in 1867. (39) The Winget family was mentioned in the 1893 Rose Neighborhood Sketches. (40) A Gilbert Brown bought property from Aaron Winget; Henry Jewell married Sivilla Winget [sic Lovilla] and lived on his father-in-law’s place in Huron; and Benjamin Winget lived near four corners, known as York’s. In back of Benjamin’s was one of the “finest chestnut groves in the state. I have never seen a more beautiful collection of these stately trees anywhere.”

In the 1860 census, George W. Winget, age 15, was listed with Aaron. But he was not listed with Aaron in 1850. A George W. is listed in the York Settlement Cemetery with Aaron and family. Aaron was the only identified son who did not immigrate to Michigan. He was listed in the index to Professor W.H. McIntosh’s “History of Wayne County, New York,” printed in 1877 on page 173, but there is no biography.

Caleb B. Winget

Caleb B. Winget was born on July 6, 1821 in Ontario County, New York and died on July 3, 1864 in Genesee County, Michigan. He was married at age 24 to Margaret J. Terks (Yerkes?) on February 1, 1846 at Genesee County, Michigan. (41), (42) Margaret was 19, born on October 26, 1826 (other source has November 1827) in New York and died on February 19, 1871 in Genesee County, Michigan. (43) Both Caleb and Margaret were buried in Fairview Cemetery, Fenton Township (Linden), Genesee County. (44) There was a Jonathan Yerkes family in Mundy Township, Genesee County in 1840 where Caleb and Margaret were living in 1850. Caleb and Margaret’s children were probably Thomas, Alice, Mary and Wallace J., all born in Michigan. There were undoubtedly additional children. In the Winget burial plot at Fairview Cemetery is a tombstone labeled only M.B.D.

Caleb and Margaret lived in Mundy Township, as did Caleb’s brothers Reuben and David, although by 1860 they had moved to Fenton Township, a short distance south of Mundy. Caleb was a cooper (made casks or barrels) and a farmer. In 1850 he had property valued at $250, by 1860 it was valued at $800. Their children were attending school up to age 19, there must have been a high school in the area. After Caleb died, Margaret did not re-marry. She remained in Fenton Township until her death in 1871. Just before she died the value of their farm was now $1,700 and Thomas and a Wallace J. Winget (born circa 1852) were single, living at home and probably managing the farm.

Caleb served during the Civil War. His tombstone reads Co. G, 8th Mich Inf. There are two entries that both seem to be Caleb. The first is a Company K, 10th Michigan Infantry record for a C. B. Winget, age 40, from Genesee County. C. B. enlisted as a private on December 9, 1861 at age 40, enlisted in Company K, 10th Infantry on February 6, 1862, discharged on November 15, 1862. He was listed as achieving distinguished service with the 10th. An additional record has C. B. Winget, Fenton, Co. K; discharged for disability, private 10th Infantry. (48) Caleb was living in Fenton Township in 1860. The second is a record for a Caleb B. Winget, a private in Company G, 8th Michigan Infantry, age 43, from Genesee. Another source has a Caleb B. Wright, 8th Infantry, died at Washington, DC of wounds on July 5, 1864. (49) The pension record for the Caleb Winget in the 8th listed his widow as Margaret J. Winget. The date on the record appears to be August 19 or 29, 1864. Caleb probably first enlisted in the 10th Infantry, then transferred to the 8th Infantry and may have died while serving in the Army.

David Winget

David Winget was born on April 3, 1824 and probably died on December 23, 1905 (50) (he was found in 1900 census). David married a Lucy Abbot. She may be the Lucy Ann Winget who died on September 12, 1894 in Genesee County. (51) David was listed as a widower in the 1900 census. David and Lucy were buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mundy Township, Genesee County, Michigan. (52) Their children Hattie, Maxwell (died January 11, 1881) and Sarah are also buried there. Also buried there are an Alma Winget (probably Elma) and a John Winget. David and Lucy had nine children, all but two of whom died before they reached age 30 (by 1881).

David’s published biography (53) gives a great deal of information and confirms the names of his parents, and by association, his siblings. The biography and an engraving of his farm are reprinted here.

“David Winget lives on a good farm on section 16, Flint Township, Genesee County. He was born in Phelps, Ontario County, N. Y., April 3, 1824, and when six years of age was taken by his parents, Caleb and Mary (Farris) Winget to their new home in Wayne County, N. Y. They settled in Sodus Township, where our subject was reared and educated, remaining there until he was twenty-four or twenty-five years of age. He was early trained in the economic principles of agricultural life, although while living in Sodus he worked at coopering for about three years; aside from that he has always been engaged in farming and in breeding stock.

“After leaving Sodus, our subject settled in Huron, Wayne County, N. Y., and lived there until the spring of 1854, when he came to Genesee County and settled in the township of Mundy. There he purchased a farm upon which he resided until the spring of 1883, when he sold out his place and bought where he now lives in Flint Township. Mr. Winget has been an important factor in clearing up and improving the land in Mundy Township, and has made valuable changes, individual and in company with others. He has a first-class series of buildings on is farm, which comprises one hundred and sixty-three acres, and each department of the place is thoroughly developed. He has fine orchards and his stock is of the best grade.

“Our subject was married in Wayne County, N. Y., February 15, 1843, to Miss Lucy Abbott, who was born in Galen, of the same locality, June 13, 1824. Her parents were John and Jerusha (Babbitt) Abbott, who died in the place where the daughter was born. Our subject’s father passed away in Sodus, N. Y.; his mother died in Mundy Township. Mr. and Mrs. Winget are the parents of nine children, whose names are Elma, Sarah, Almira, Henry, Catherine, Frances, Jerusha, Maxwell D. and Hattie. Elma, Sarah and Almira died at the ages respectively of fifteen, seventeen and twenty-eight years. Almira was the wife of Albert Ives; Henry and Catherine died in infancy; Frances is the wife of Ira F. Wright; Jerusha is the wife of Everette Meeker; Hattie passed away when eighteen years of age; and Maxwell D. was killed by the bursting of a balance wheel, while cutting corn stalks.

“Mr. Winget has served as Justice of the Peace in Mundy Township for two terms, and has also been conspicuous in school matters. He is a strong Republican politically, and takes an active part in all local affairs. His attention however is chiefly occupied by his farm work, and the result of his efforts is that he owns one of the finest estates in the county. A view of his place with its principal buildings appears on another page.”

Three of David and Lucy’s daughters married. Almira, who died circa 1885 and married Albert Ives had three children - Madge, Carole D. (son) and Lucy H. Albert may have died by 1900. David’s grandson Carole D. Ives, wife (Hattie) and great-grandson Carole D. Jr. were living with him in 1900.
