On the 1850 Slave Schedule for Hampshire county, a William Purget is listed as owning one slave. Rachael King was a slave in the William S. Purgit household. sites.rootsweb.com/~wvminera/deaths17.htm" lists "Rachel, colored woman reared by Purgit, Purgittsville, November 26, 1902." By 1870 she is listed as a servant and in 1880 she is listed with the Nashville Purgit household. The family story from Susan (great grand daughter of Nashville) [email protected] relates that Rachael came to live with Nashville and his wife Rachel (Rachel Athey) to care for their six daughters. She was called Black Rach and would take the girls out onto the long porch of the old Purgit house and tell them ghost stories before bedtime. Her grandmother said they were always afraid to go to bed after one of her stories. She apparently lived close to 100 and is buried in the Purgit/High cemetery although the grave is unmarked (1900 census, Rachael is listed as a black servant, born in 1800, age 100). It is thought that she came to the Purget's from the Athey family and that there were both a mother and daughter slaves, and the daughter was Rachael.

Census listings: William Purget (wife Sidney Foley) lists one slave in 1840, Rachael is again listed with this William in 1870 (she is age 60), with Nashville (grandson of William) in 1880 and with William (son of William, Sr., father of Nashville) in 1900. She is not listed with William in 1850 or 1860 (but 1850 Slave Schedule for Hampshire county, a William Purget is listed as owning one slave). She could have been with the Athey family at this time? In a deed dated August 17, 1858 between William Purgit and Granville Shoemaker, William granted to Granville the following property: two wheat stacks, three rye stacks, one oat stack, six hay stacks, fifty head of sheep, thirty head of hogs, one wagon, four ploughs, four sets of gears, one negro woman called Rachel, in trust to secure to Geo. Shoemaker the payment of two notes, the first bearing date of the 5th day of June, 1850 payable the 6th day of June, 1850 for thirty dollars and fifty five cents, the 2nd bearing date the 29th day of October 1856 & payable the 30th day of Oct 1856 for $50.53, also to secure to Granville Purgit the payment of one note dated the 7th day of August 1858 for three hundred dollars payable the 9th(?) day of August 1858, also the payment of one note to Frederick Purgit of the state of Ohio for $100, all executed by the said William Purgit payable to the said above named men.

There is no mention of William D. after the 1860 census.
Sydney married Andrew Erwin. At the time he was living with his siblings on a farm. His parents had died since the previous census. At some point Sydney and Andrew, who was said to hate farming, moved their way west. Two of their children, William Chess & Ina Molly, were born in Kansas, possibly near Leota or Eldorado. In one census, Ina is reported to have been born in Colorodo. Their third child, Paul Fletcher, was born in Colorado. By the 1900 census, they were living in Salt Lake City along with Martha Davis. In the 1900 census, Martha reported having had 5 children and only 1 living. Both Martha & Sydney died between 1900 & 1910. According to family lore, Sydney died of consumption (tuberculosis).
During the 1910 census, Ina was living in a boarding house and her father was listed in another. Her father traveled to find work. Among other things, he panned for gold (his small scale for measuring gold dust is still in the family, and did carpentry work on Scottys mansion in Death Valley. As a young woman, Ina earned money as a dressmaker. Her bother, William Chess spent most of his life in Washington state and is buried in Salt Lake City. Her brother Paul Fletcher lived his life in Oregon. Ina married John Shields whose family had been Mormon pioneers and later left the church. John was a recent graduate from the University of Utah and was trained as an electrical engineer. They appear to be neighbors on the 1900 census. They had 2 children, Elsie Janice & Willard Erwin. Willard later changed his name as an adult to William. Ina had a weak heart due to having had rheumatic fever when she was young. She was told not to have any more children due to the risk to her health. Ina would later die of congestive heart failure.
The family moved east to Hazleton, Pa. for Johns job when the children were still very young. William had been born with a small bald patch on the top of his head. When teased by other children, his retort was that he had been scalped by an Indian when he lived out west. John played the stock market and did well enough to send his daughter to Bucknell College, and later his son to the University of Pennsylvania. William (Bill) postponed his college entrance until a full year after high school graduation while his sister finished her final year at Bucknell. This occurred during the Depression. Elsie worked as a teacher for a few years before marrying Hedrick Ravanell. They had 3 children. John & Ina moved to NJ when John lost his job during a company merger. John worked for Dupont, where Bill would also work during the summers. After fininshing at Penn, Bill then went to Hahnemann Medical School. He finished his internship in 1943 and served in the Army Medical Corp from 1943-1946 following General Patton across France, Belgium, & Germany. He never spoke about the war, but it is presumed that it was traumatic, and that he was likely present at the liberation of at least one concentration camp given photographs in his possession. He had wanted to become an OB/GYN but was never able to afford to take the time for a residency due to raising and supporting a family. He had 2 children from his 1st marriage which ended in divorce. There were 3 children from his 2nd marriage. Both Bill & his father John were industrious builders. John built the family home of brick in Salt Lake City. Bill always had a project in the works. The most exceptional one was a patio of poured concrete 15x30 which more than 40 years later is still in perfect condition. He also enjoyed the out of doors and planned wonderful family vacations in New England, Canada, and an extended camping trip through the west. He died of lung cancer after smoking for decades.

3. Granville Purget was born 1837 in Mineral County, Virginia, now West Virginia (ref. 1900 Census). The census for Pike Township, Madison County, Ohio lists Granville as age 62, born July 1837 in West Virginia. Granville died on 12 September 1905 and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery near Mechanicsburg, Champaign County, Ohio. On 06 April, 1880 he married Anna M. FARRINGTON in Madison County, Ohio (re. Marriage certificate). Anna was the daughter of John R. and Matilda Barnet Farrington of Madison County, Ohio. She must have died sometime after 1883 and before 1900, since we find Granville and his son William Earl living with his in-laws in the 1900 census. In the 1910 census for Madison County, Ohio we find William Earl living with his Aunt Amy Alice Farrington. Granville and Anna had two children, Florence and William Earl.
