The theme of this Quinn Gathering will be Genetic Genealogy, and the event will see the launch of the County Donegal DNA Project. The purpose of the County Donegal DNA Project is to promote and encourage the use of genetics in genealogy in order to prove family relationships. The concentration is going to be upon Donegal people living in Donegal with a Donegal pedigree and would include Donegal people in Derry and Strabane. The results of DNA testing within the families will be announced.
Genetic genealogical research is ongoing; as more and more people are tested a clearer picture will emerge. However the genetic ancestry of the Quinn Sept of Donegal as with many other Donegal Septs points to the Connachta, which is appropriate in that the surname Quinn means “descendants of Conn”. This ancestry they share with many others in North West Ireland and West Scotland and their common ancestor may have lived in the first or second century.
