10 JUNE 1944 BACUP VANQUISH HURNEY’S BEST BOWLING RECORD WICKET-KEEPING [Last Season: Match
abandoned.] Play in
the “Derby” match at Rawtenstall on Monday was considerably curtailed, but
Bacup managed to pull off a win with eight minutes to spare. They dismissed
the home side in 105 minutes’ actual play for 63, which they hit off in under
an hour for the loss of only four wickets. This was the Laneheaders’ fourth victory,
which is as many as they gained throughout the whole of last season. The game
was notable for two brilliant performances by Bacup palyers. T. Hurney, the
captain, achieved the best bowling feat of his career, so far as the number
of wickets is concerned, by dismissing eight batsmen for 27 runs, claiming
seven victims for two runs (including three in four balls) in his last 6.3
overs. He was greatly assisted by C. R. Taylor, who accomplished what is
believed to be a record achievement by a Bacup wicket-keeper, taking six
catches, stumping a seventh batsman and helping to run out another one. J.
Warburton, who made 26 of the Rawtenstall runs, was missed before he scored
and twice with only one to his name. Hurney, who in nine games has taken 40
wickets at a cost of seven runs apiece, followed up his fine bowling with an
undefeated innings of 28, and J. Barcroft (13 not out) and A. Smith (11) gave
him good support. All the four wickets were secured by J. Warburton for 24
runs. The last time the Laneheaders won at Rawtenstall was in 1937. Gate
receipts only amounted to £3 2s. 9d. Scores and bowling analyses: RAWTENSTALL. J. Warburton c Taylor b

2 SEPTEMBER 1944 A GAME WORTH BACUP’S FINE WIN AGAINST [Last Season: Bacup 67,
East Lancashire 69 for 7.] Bacup achieved a grand win in their home
match with East Lancashire on Saturday, which produced some really enjoyable
cricket. It was, in fact, a game well worth watching. By enterprising batting
the Laneheaders totalled 162 – their highest score for a couple of seasons –
and against a varied attack East Lancashire, who are second in the league
table, could muster no more than 88. Three players on leave from the Forces –
V. Broderick, W. Collinge and E. Neil – were included in the home side, and
all contributed to their success. Of the three, Broderick played the biggest
part. First, he was associated with C. R. Taylor in a second wicket
partnership which produced 74 in 43 minutes, his share being 31. This was the
product of confident and crisp batting, his hits including four 4s. He
followed it up by some skilful bowling, which yielded him four wickets for 20
runs. In a vigorous innings Neil collected 16 (three 4s) in 14 minutes, and
his fast bowling dismissed three batsmen for 12 runs. Collinge failed with
the bat, but he had the satisfaction of bowling one of East Lancashire’s most
promising batsmen. From the start Bacup were looking for
runs and when the second wicket fell 91 had been scored in less than an hour.
C. R. Taylor claimed the batting honours with an innings of 62. After a shaky
start – he was missed early on – he batted well, compiling his runs in 75
minutes, though he only hit five boundaries. The fall of the fourth wicket at
130 marked the beginning of a collapse, the last six wickets producing only
32 runs. A total of 162 in two hours, however, was a good performance. L. D.
Walsh, with three wickets, had the best bowling return for East Lancashire,
J. H. Chadwick’s two victims costing him 69 runs.
Had it not been for a gallant effort by their captain, G. Holden, the
reply of East Lancashire, who actually batted a couple of minutes longer than
Bacup, would have been a poor one. Opening the innings, Holden was the eighth
man out after scoring 37 out of 79 in 108 minutes. Besides the bowling
performances previously mentioned, T. Hurney took two wickets for 23 runs.
There was a “gate” of £7 16s 9d., and a collection for Taylor realised £3 6s
6d. Scores and bowling analyses: BACUP T. Hurney c Reid b
