Broken Hearts, Broken Memories and no Headstone
Some of those who have no one left to remember them as they once were or dreams of who they would of been.

There are numerous reasons why a person did not receive a headstone or some permanent type of marker.

Financial is usually the most common reason, then some do not even want to recognize that someone has passed away, then others maybe did not deserve a marker in the eyes of the survivors.

However, Some made a stone with their own hands, probably with tears in their eyes and hands shaking as they scratched in the letters on the cement or wood thatthey were working with. This are truly a tribute of love for the one who died. Click here to see one of these Labor of Love headstones NOTE: Please check with the cemetery - it may be against the rules now to have homemade stones etc. I am not associated with any Cemetery association and do not know the rules and regulations each cemetery may have

I have seen where they have carefully taken a funeral marker and set it flat in the cement in attempts to mark this grave forever, but these type of markers do not last much longer the funeral marker that is free standing. In some case they disappear faster as the rain lays on the metal longer.

What can be done?

Providence Cemetery in Burleson County, Texas has taken the task and cooperation of a Stone cutter out of Round Rock Texas to ensure, a memorial stone is placed for those buried and forgotten (whenever they are found) They are also placing new stones at the base or near the original headstone that is becoming unreadable, broken etc. These are small stones about 18" by 24" with just the names and years- They have set up a fund to do this as well as when a family member locates a grave they can order one and pay for it themselves through the cemetery association's program. These stones range in price from $30. to $60. Which is a price most people can afford. It is sad that the Cemeteries in Mills County, (not just this one) could not set up a program like that to preserve our history and the preserve the present for the future generations to come.

In attempts to document the funeral markers and identify the ones that are unreadable, I have listed a few here with some small description. If you have any information you would care to share, Please email me at [email protected]

Family plot of Funeral Markers
photo 1 and photo 2

This plot located on the main road thru the cemetery in Section 2, Block 2, plot 12

Plot has a cement curbing around the family- The headstone pictured belongs to a living member of the family and the engraving will not be shown.

Three Funeral marker's and all practically unreadable. I was able to tell who two of the markers belonged to by court records but one of them is still unknown. The Index Cards at the Caretaker's building had unknown on them until recently. I believe that two of the funeral markers belong to Luccal Burks and Clifford O. Burks and one Unknown could be a Burks.
