Joy-Mohler Cemetery is located Southwest from Goldthwaite, TX.

Out of Goldthwaite, take Hwy 16 toward San Saba for approximately one or 2 miles.

At County Road 3023, also known as Bull Creek Road, turn left and go approximately five miles, to the ranch of Mr. Eddie Mazanec, Jr., which is a blonde brick home on the right side of the road.

Mr. Mazanec informed us that in the event of his absence, persons interested in seeing the cemetery should contact his next door neighbor, Mr. E.M. House or his wife Linda who maintain a key to the Mazanec property.



 Before Mills County was formed in 1887 and before Goldthwaite had selected and purchased the land for a Cemetery in 1888, the people living in this area buried their dead loved ones in the Clements Cemetery, Northwest of the town or Mohler Cemetery located southwest of the town. (NOTE: Mohler cemetery was probably in Lampasas County, Texas. or the very southern tip of Brown County) I have not checked for Deed records yet

The earliest headstone belongs to George Joy in 1871 and may explain why the cemetery was known as Joy-Mohler cemetery for years. I do not know when the last funeral was held there as I have not been able to survey the cemetery in person, but obtained most of the names from the books and newspaper's in the bibliographies listed below. Some additional data was from Family Researchers of the families. The latest date known Headstone is that of Alex Shaw in 1934.

In the sixty-three years between the first and last known burials, I am sure that there are others, either with or without markers buried there. Since I don't have access to this cemetery that is on Private Property.

I am asking those with knowledge of those buried here to contact me.

Special Thanks to Rosemary (Bradley) Davis and Pat Longest for going to the cemetery, taking pictures, doing a current headstone survey, which added to (watch for the to see the new information found) along with information that helped validate some of the information I have listed below. Rosemary and Pat have taken Photographs of the Tankersley Cemetery in Western Tom Green County and Crews Cemetery that is located in Eastern Runnels County and I will be providing a link for those pages soon.

Also I am interested in finding where the CLEMENTS Cemetery is? did the name change? Who is buried there?

Humphries is buried in the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery, Section 2, Block 4, Plot 26) I have not checked Newspaper's for that time frame yet and there was no birth record for that date at the Mills County TX courthouse.

I checked the Births recorded at the Mills County TX Courthouse and was only able to find two for this date, one of those is ruled out because of the birth record being filed by Aff. The other is a Female baby Allen, Book 3, page 75.

JOY Family researcher's believe that George W. Joy buried in the Mohler Cemetery, could be the same George Joy who was born born about 1783 in South Carolina and died on January 15, 1875 in Lampasas County, Texas.

"George Joy (1783-1875) was married twice. He had five children from his first marriage (wife's name unknown) and five from his second marriage to widow Martha Chesser. He had a step-son named William Lewis Chesser. George Joy was a veteran of the War of 1812 and War with the Seminole Indians."

George Joy was a private in the company commanded by Captain Joah H. Banhon in the 1st Regiment of the Tennessee Volunteers Mounted Gunmen Commanded by Colonel Robert H. Dyer in the War with the Seminole Indians. In the War of 1812 he was a private in the company commanded by Captain Isaiah Renshaw in the 1st Regiment of the Tennessee Volunteers commanded by Colonel Thomas M. Renton. George Joy enlisted in "Murphriesborough," Rutherford County, Tennessee (He is mentioned on 1810 and 1812 tax lists of Rutherford County).

Also in the same company was a John and a Jesse Joy. John Joy moved to Crawford County, Arkansas and some of his descendants settled in the Kerr County, Texas and Kimble County, Texas area. Ann Bowman doesn't know what happened to Jesse, but she wrote that a Jesse Joy later shows up in Illinois.

At the bottom page 89 and continuing to near the bottom of page 90- is the Paragraph about the Joy-Mohler Cemetery. Beginning halfway down page 90 the author writes about three men who were attending the funeral of Alex Shaw in 1934 and she wrote these sentences that I have extracted from the original paragraph:

"The Three Men looking around came to the tomb of George J. Joy, aged 92, who was the father of Robert Joy who occupied the Robert Joy place for years since known as the Mohler place. The three gentlemen, aged now, were present at the funeral of this man, as barefoot boys at their first funeral in about 1871. George W. Joy was the grandfather of John S. Chesser of Goldthwaite."

The Three men that was referred to in that particular paragraph were: Messrs. Chesser, Henry and James Rahl.

Some Chesser/Joy Family Information

She wrote that William Lewis Chesser was born December 10, 1819, Cannon County, Tennessee; died February 12, 1881, San Antonio, Bexar Co., TX.

William was the son of Daniel CHESSER and Martha Nancy SPARKS. His father Daniel Chesser was born Bet. 1796 - 1804, and died October 12, 1825 when William was about 6 years old. His mother, Martha Nancy SPARKS CHESSER was born 1804 - 1805 in Virginia, and she died October 25, 1880 in Kimble, Texas.

Martha Nancy SPARKS CHESSER remarried a year later to George JOY (who according to JOY Family Researcher Ann Bowman was a widower with five children).

George JOY was born Abt. 1785 in SC, and died January 15, 1874 in Lampasas, Texas. George and Martha were married October 12, 1826 in Jefferson, IL. This researcher shows the couple had six children.
