COINCIDENCE OR EVIDENCE??
Based on research as of 17 April 2002
by Lisa Braendle

The following information leads some Peavey researchers to believe that Dudley C. and Eliphalet Peavey are sons of John Peavey & Lois (Colbath/Coolbath) who resided in Barrington NH:

CENSUS RECORDS

1790 Barrington Census states that John Sr. (son of Hudson (Abel2, Edward1) & Lois had 2 children.  There are two boys listed as being born bet. 1774-1790.

1800 Barrington Census states that John Sr. & Lois had 11 children -6 boys and 5 girls.  2 boys born 1775-1784; 1 boy born 1785-1790; 1 boy born 1785-1790; 2 boys born 1790-1800; 2 girls 1775-1784; 1 girl born 1785-1790 and 2 girls 1790-1800.

1810 Barrington Census states that John Sr. & Lois had children still at home (first three boys weren’t on census) which would make sense. A John and Joseph listed on p. 503 of Barrington census and Dudley listed on p. 514 also living in Barrington.

1850 Strafford Census, Daniel (son of Dudley) p. 269 listed with his wife Betsey and their children:  Eliphalet, Josephine and Sarah J.  On p. 268 John Jr.& Family are listed (Grandson of Hudson), John C.(son of John Jr.) p. 279, and Hudson not far away on p. 282.

LAND RECORDS

This is very convincing for connection, please see as follows:
Strafford, Strafford Co., NH Land Records-

LOT 150-4TH RANGE

118/120-Eliphalet Peavey to Foss
Year 1823 LOT 150-4TH RANGE

173/483-Parshley to Parshley

LOT 153-4TH RANGE

245/116 Parshley to RW Foss

462/430 Dud PV Hill (last owners recorded that we have) 1905-SAME DESCRIPTION specifically called out as 245/116,
Part of LOT 153-4TH RANGE. . .
We also have other land records of other land owners listing similar desc. as follows:
339/369 Foss to Foss (1904)
160/237 Foss to Parshley (1869)
456/499-as mentioned in 462/430 (1934)

To recap and to quote June Peavey who studied these records, “Dud Peavey Hill takes up a large circle and encompasses Dudley C. Peavey’s land, his [possible] brother, Eliphalet Peavey’s land and borders by Joseph Peavey’s land”. “Furthermore, it is on Strafford Ridge Road.  Significance of that is:  David Peavey’s daughter M. Ellen (Martha) Peavey Ames (June’s family) of Waterville, ME stated that David, Father was related to all of the NH Peaveys-that two brother’s of English descent had settled in Strafford (once called Barrington), and that David came in through them.  She further stated that they lived on Strafford Ridge.”  This correspondence via email from June to myself, by the way was dated June of 2001.

CEMETERY RECORDS

Important to note:  All of these properties are right by Strafford Center which is where Hudson’s sons, John and Joseph (& their families) are buried.   Daniel’s son Eliphalet is possibly buried there as well but cannot get actual written confirmation. However, a Peavey researcher, Ellen Stiles went to the cemetery and actually went thru cemetery records.  She had a record of Eliphalet B. Peavey listed on a piece of paper in an old book, but couldn’t find his marker.  She thought maybe it was unmarked and that the veteran flag had been moved to the incorrect burial site.  I have the letter from Ellen to June Peavey from many years back.  This would further prove the connection.  My ggg grandfather, Daniel Peavey was buried in another part of the cemetery on Ridge Road and is considered part of the Strafford Ctr Cemetery (aka Ridge Cemetery).
Continued . . .

I also have Strafford Ctr cemetery records listed on the PV family.com research site if you’re interested.

We know that Eliphalet went to different areas than the rest of the family and this could be because he married and had a child young-not sure.  We know that Eliphalet owned land in Strafford, NH, Canada and Holland, VT.  Eliphalet died in 1876 and is buried in Holland VT.  Eliphalet named sons Joseph Leonard, John, Levi, George etc.

We do not yet know where Dudley is buried.  State of Michigan still cannot locate a death record for Dudley Peavey.  Many researchers have searched many individual towns/cities of Michigan as well such as Mecosta Co., City of Ludington, City of Coldwater, Hillsdale Co., ETC!  Fellow researchers have also checked most of IN-I am currently checking Fremont, Sandusky Co., OH since we know he resided there with family at one time.  Dudley’s son Daniel resided and raised a family in Strafford.  Daniel’s son Eliphalet also stayed in Strafford and had family there.  Eliphalet B. died as result of being in Civil War by disease as recorded by Strafford County History-revised in 1995-not sure where he is buried.  My gg grandmother Josephine also stayed in Strafford-buried in Greenland NH.

The most convincing and important aspect to this connection is the fact that four separate researchers came to this conclusion separately.  Grace Staples researched NH, VT and Canadian records and stated in letter to me, “ it must be either John or Joseph of Barrington/Strafford (sons of Hudson)”. . ., Mark Kulow, also researching the Peavey name in general came to the same conclusion on his own.  June & I had seen this connection years ago but couldn’t find the proof necessary to claim them as our own.  June & I continued to search for other possible links by gathering as many Peaveys together as possible to connect the puzzle pieces.  We have now compiled over 1600 names-approx 85 pages long not including our own branches and approx six other major branches.  (Ichabod line b. 1757c, John S. (Moses b. 1824), Abraham, the Southern branches of GA/AL etc., John Drew and so on)

It is also important to note that one of the reasons that this line of John & Lois (Hudson line) attracted our attention years ago was the names in Center Strafford Cemetery, “Ann Josephine 1831-1834” and another young one, named Joseph.  My gg grandmother’s name was Josephine Ann and was born in 1840 (as stated on Cemetery Records from Greenland NH).  There is an obvious strong reference and carrying on of the Joseph/Josephine given names.

Researchers also know that the Peaveys had named children from maternal side, (popular English naming pattern during that time) either by given, middle or surname in most occasions. We think that Dudley and Eliphalet were named after Lois Colbath’s family.  June, Jalanne and others are currently researching the name along with Colbath researchers hoping to find the parents of Lois.  We already know Colbath researchers are trying to find a link for a Dudley Colbath and there is also a possible connection to a Eliphalet Colbath.  What makes it even more interesting is the fact that on Jalanne’s side (Eliphalet researcher who has her own Peavey site!) noticed that one of Eliphalet’s desc was named possibly after a “Coolbath” (aka Colbath).  The line of Eliphalet is a much longer story and we are currently researching for other possible connections.

There is another connection to the William who also resided near the Barrington/Strafford boys referred to above who we are almost positive is another son of John and Lois.  Still trying to find the others!

MISC

It is known that James (as well as John C.) of Newington, NH (another son of Hudson) was an inn-keeper (as I believe Hudson was at one time as well).  We have other written stories by Dudley Descendants that he had a brother Eliphalet (Lifelet) or one of close relation to Dudley. He was in Kansas at one point where he owned and ran a saloon/inn.  There is yet another Eliphlet Pevy who resided, died and was buried in Anderson Co., KS but that is another story.  We are trying to link him to this family also.

By way of land, census & cemetery records, places of residence, name similarities etc, some PV researchers are coming to the conclusion that Dudley C. and Eliphalet were sons of John & Lois (Colbath) Peavey.  I can’t remember if Ross came across this possible connection or not.  I haven’t read his research notes in awhile-something to check on.  We may never be able to fully prove this connection-tis true, but we will keep on trying!

I want to also touch on more about the connection between David as son of Dudley. David was born in 1812 in Strafford NH per his death record from Strafford NH (of course his parents aren’t listed).  This time and place fits very nicely in the time line for another one of Dudley’s missing sons.  As you know Ross Peavey outlined a timeline for Dudley’s children and we are filling them in one at a time!  June’s family also passed down stories of an Eliphalet (Lifelet) who was a quite the joker (who had a parrot) and would tease his wife.  Of course, I can’t forget to mention that David named one of his sons Dudley Clarence (aka Clarence Dudley). So we have the constant tie in with Dudley and Eliphalet.  Dudley names his first son Daniel Dudley who in turn named his son Eliphalet!    Daniel named his first born son Eliphalet, not Daniel or Dudley after himself or his Father. There must be a close connection.  (although Daniel Dudley does name a son (2nd marriage) after himself.   I could go on & on with similarities like these.

In conclusion, there is a strong connection between all of these men of this we have no doubt.  We know they are definitely closely related.  We are still trying to gather more evidence to substantiate our claims.
