Descendants of Eliphalet Peavey
Compiled by Jalanne Barnes and Grace Staples

Generation No. 1

 1.  Eliphalet6 Peavey  (John5, Hudson4, Abel3, Edward2, Thomas1) was born September 1794 in Strafford, NH, and died April 24, 1876 in Holland, Orleans County, VT.  He married Anna Eunice Woods Abt. September 1815 in Strafford County, NH, daughter of Joseph Woods and Diadamia Newell.  She was born June 19, 1794 in Waterford, Caledonia County, VT, and died April 20, 1868 in Waterford, Caledonia County, VT.

Notes for Eliphalet Peavey:
Eliphalet Peavey's death record states he died of dropsy at the age of 81 years and 7 months, that he was a farmer and had been born in Strafford, NH. He was often called Lefery.  We aren't sure if Lefery was his middle name or a nickname for Eliphalet.

Eliphalet has been proved be the son of John Peavey and Lois Colbath. A tax record book found in the home of Robert Peavey, the grandson of John and Lois (Colbath) Peavey, contained an entry (among other items) that Eliphalet Peavey appeared on the 1820 census as the son of John and Lois and was therefore brother of Robert Peavey's father (John Jr.). John and Eliphalet are brothers of Dudley C. Peavey. There are other children in the family, a fact noted on the census records, however, so far their names are not yet proven, though there are some speculations.

We know Eliphalet Peavey died in Holland, Vermont, but there is no burial permit for him in the state of Vermont. In addition, we have a really good book which shows the location of every graveyard in Vermont and we have visited EVERY SINGLE ONE IN THE ENTIRE AREA OF THE STATE WHERE THE PEAVEYS LIVED and Eliphalet Peavey and his wife, Anna Eunice Woods (who never went by the surname Peavey) ARE NOT BURIED IN VERMONT, can't possibly be buried here. However, it should be noted that from the time Eliphalet married (before 1820) he nor his wife have appeared on ANY census, even though they lived until 1876 and 1868, respectively. We DO KNOW they preferred living in Canada and it appears they owned property there, though they did live in Waterford, VT for a short time before Anna's death (they lived with her sister) and Eliphalet disappeared until his death in Holland, Vermont.

According to the vital records of his children, it looks as if Eliphalet LIVED IN STRAFFORD COUNTY, NEW HAMPSHIRE during the 1820 census -- he has children born BEFORE and AFTER that census who were BORN IN STRAFFORD! The big question is where was he?!

Notes for Anna Eunice Woods:
Cause of Death: Consumption. Anna was known by the nicknames of Betsey, Annie and Eunice. It appears that Eliphalet Peavey and Anna Woods never actually married, though it is clear they began living together about September 1815. All documents with her name are with the surname Woods or Wood and never with Peavey. In addition, her death record is under the name of Woods, not Peavey. In searching for information about her, I have found all dates and names concerning this woman have been altered as if people were hiding her identity and her marital status. Even her death record makes it look as if her birth took place two years later than it was! Those are the facts. These seem to be substantiated by the following story of who Anna Woods and Eliphalet Peavey were that has passed down through the family of their daughter, Louise (George Barnes's ancestor).

It is said that her name was Anna Eunice, that she was slightly older than Eliphalet, that she was named Eunice after her father's mother, that there were three generations of Alice wives on the Woods side before grandmother Eunice and that her daughter, Louise, was given the middle name Alice for that reason. Eunice ran away from home on Christmas day in 1811 (she was sixteen) and the first the family heard of her after that was when she came home with a man from New Hampshire and a little son named Joseph Leonard, who was named after her father (Joseph Woods) and her cousin, Leonard Woods, who was the son of her Uncle John, the latter having grown up with Anna on the family farm. (In fact, it is believed that Eunice named her son John after her favorite uncle.) The story goes on to say that during their stay, Anna and her husband accidently let it slip that the baby wasn't named as much for her father and cousin as it was for members of Eliphalet's family. That made some of the family uneasy, but they could live with it. Then Anna's parents began to suspect that she and Eliphalet weren't really married and they reacted by violently (according to the story) throwing Anna and her the family out of the Woods' Waterford home, declaring that she was dead and she was to never show her face around them ever again, whether she ever married or not.

A footnote to the above story is that when Anna was dying from consumption in 1868, she and Eliphalet were staying in the home of Anna's sister, Mary Polly Woods, who was married to William Shipman and lived in Waterford, VT, not too far from where the Woods children had been born. Both their parents were dead and Anna spent the last weeks of her life surrounded by her loved ones. After her death (we don't have any idea where she was buried), Eliphalet is said to have returned to Holland, VT (though we don't know if that was their home or the home of one of their children), where he lived for eight years and four days, dying in 1876. It is said they were buried together, but again, we cannot find where he is buried either. Their death records do not say where they are buried.

Mr. Barnes was a veteran of World War I and a member of Brighton Post No. 80, American Legion and Border Barrack No. 2031, Veterans of World War I. On December 21, 1922, he was married to the former Pearl Langmaid, who survives him. He also leaves three sons, George Barnes of Island Pond, Richard Barnes of Hardwick and Thomas Barnes of Springfield, Mass.; one daughter, Mrs. Alton (Maye) Wing of Island Pond; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. A son, Raymond, predeceased him in 1975, and a brother, George, predeceased him in 1970. Friends may call this evening at the Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Island Pond from 7 to 9. Notes for Linda Susan Barnes:
Cause of Death: Sarcoma of Right Eye.

Linda was born when Dorothy was forty and had been married to George for 20 years. It seems if they were able to have children, one would have been born sooner than 20 years into a marriage. It looks as if Linda was adopted. Birth and death records can be found in VT Vital Records that declared George and Dorothy are her parents, but many adoptive parents have a new birth certificate drawn up with their names as the birth parents, so that no one ever has to know the child wasn't their blood. She is buried with George and Dorothy in a grave simply marked Linda S. Barnes, with no dates.

However, the main reason we think Linda was adopted is the fact that James and George were not on speaking terms for more than 20 years because James refused to give George his new baby boy when  he was asked by his brother to give him up. The reason? George told James that he and Pearl had four healthy living children and could have more. The child in question was Thomas, James and Pearl's youngest. They told George no, he was crazy to think they would give up their baby and told him to adopt if he wanted children. About three years later, George and Dorothy had a baby girl, Linda. It LOOKS like a case of adoption!

George served in US Army during WW2 and the Korean War, with a gap between. He served a total of 9 years. George and Priscilla married by Congregational clergy. Their marriage license was signed by Pauline Welch, Brighton Town Clerk.

 110.  Maye Nellie11 Barnes (James Thomas10, Leslie Carl9, George Washington8, Louise Alice7 Peavey, Eliphalet6, John5, Hudson4, Abel3, Edward2, Thomas1) was born February 26, 1928 in Brighton, VT, and died April 30, 2001 in VT.  She married (1) Everett Leon Sanborn, Jr. Private.  He was born Private.  She married (2) Alton Crandall Wing August 13, 1949 in Unknown (see May's Notes), son of Robert Wing and Etta Crandall.  He was born June 12, 1915 in Barton, VT, and died December 14, 1998 in Island Pond, VT.

Notes for Maye Nellie Barnes:
A source claimed May married Alton (Chief) Wing on August 13, 1949, but told her children they were married on August 13, 1948. The source claimed this was because May was first married to Everett Sanborn while having an affair with Chief and when she found herself pregnant, quickly got a divorce and married just a month before the baby, Sharyn, was born. Because no marriage license could be found, it is not known if this date is correct. However, the facts look as if the claim has a great deal of truth in it. May Nellie Barnes married Everett Leon Sanborn Jr. on June 21, 1945 and divorced him on
April 01, 1949 on the grounds that they had been living apart for three years. Thus May would not have been able to marry Chief until after her divorce and a waiting period (in 1975 that waiting period was 90 days so it might have been the same then). Back then, a blood test was needed, adding some time, so it may be true that May and Chief didn't marry until August 13, 1949. The lack of a marriage certificate in Vermont Vital Records suggests they married out of state, perhaps New Hampshire, perhaps to keep their children from finding their marriage record and learning the real date of their marriage. Their first child, Sharyn Lee Wing, was born on September 25, 1949.
