1900 Census Ashley Co., Ark., "niece" living with Ben & Molly Miller. (Banner Twsp)
When Perry Tubbs was killed in 1898, Belle gave Gussie to Ben and Molly (Belle's sister) to raise and also in the 1900 census of Ashley Co, Ark, de Bastrop Twsp, Bell Armstrong is listed as a servant to the family of John O'Neal and his family. She say she is 26, born Mar 1874, and is a widow, and that she had no children. Just a few doors away is her brother Columbus Wiley Hardy and his wife Annis. A great deal of mystery surrounds Belle, Perry and Sam Armstrong. In 1900 Chicot Co., Ark, Sam Armstrong is listed as "Head", born Aug 1854, Illinois, married 2 years and has no children...no one is living with him.

My name is Judy Voran. I am in the process of completing a web page on the Tubb family of the South. My grt grandmother was Nancy Lavonia [Tubb] Hopkins who was born in Perry County, AL in 1844. Her father was Jackson Tubb who died in 1845. Her mother, Permelia Jane [McLaughlin] Tubb then married Jackson's cousin Reuben Tubb. Both Permelia Tubb and Nancy [Tubb] Hopkins died in Nolan County, Texas. Jackson Tubb was the son of George and Elizabeth Tubb who were the son of William Tubb and daughter of Geroge Tubb respectively. In the process of my research I have become interested in the question of whether there was any connection between the northern and southern Tubb/s clans. I am searching for Tubb/s surnamed males who would be willing to submit a DNA sample to Family Tree DNA. I would like to find one Tubb/s surnamed descendent of the Southern clan and one Tubb/s surnamed descendent of the northern clan (Duxbury, MA -New London CT.) I am willing to pay half the costs of a 25 marker test for each. If anyone on the list knows of a Tubb/s surnamed male with a pedigree to one of those two clans willing to submit a DNA sample would they please contact me at [email protected] Also "John, Joseph, and Samuel Tubbs who were residents of Maryland" is a statement (in a a paper?) by Louis MacCartney, a Tubbs researcher on the webpage http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ ~taughannock/tubbs/wtubsnar.html Has any Tubb/s researcher found any further information about the Maryland Tubbs? I found the following query some years ago but have not followed up on it yet: "Richard Tubb: A query from The Researcher of Chillicothe, Missouri. “Need info on James TUBB, d. 1720 St. Mary’s Co., MD Was Richard Tubb of Md his bro? Who was Benjamin Tub of Md.? Was he also a bro. of James; Benj. was a soldier in Md. in 1754. Are any of these men parents of Geo. Tubb, and Bro. Wm. Tubb o Orange Co., N.C. Geo. m. Mary ____; Wm. m. Eliza. _____’ were in Orange Co., 1769; later went to Rutherford Co.; then to Greenville Co., S. C. Does anyone have info. on ch. of George and Wm. Query from Mrs. Eloise Talley of Safford, Ariz." I am looking forward to any responses. Sincerely, Judy Voran I did some searching on Separate Baptists. (See note on John Tubb in previous post.) It seems that a Shubal Stearns who was born in Boston (1706) , lived in Tolland CT with his parents and into adulthood and was ordained as a Separate Baptist minister by a Separate Baptist minister in New London CT about 1751. From there he went south to Guilford Co., NC (which was formed from Rowan and Orange in 1770 so it was Orange Co. NC when he and the Tubbs were there at about the same time ---1750's.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separate_Baptists http://www.founders.org/FJ44/article3.html I did some checking on Tubbs in New England and found a Samuel Tubbs who died in New London in about 1696. I need a will to see what might have happened there. He did have a son named William, but I think William died in CT. Then there are the Tabors. Susannah Tubb, daughter of George and Mary, married William Tabor. In doing a quick check of the 1790 census there are Tabors in New London, CT and all over MA and a few in ME and exactly two in NC. There were Tabors the Tubbs at the Head of Enoree Church in Greenville Co. who were dismissed to the Keowee Church in what is now Pickens County so they were presumably Separate Baptists along with the Tubbs. This family (according to the family tree on Ancestry) came from Virginia -- Lunenberg, Henrico, but if that is the case then they are the only family in VA. It seems coincidental that among the first settlers of Orange Co. NC (according to Leonardo) were Baptists from New England; that there are Tubbs in New London where Stearns was ordained and from where he traveled to Orange Co., NC; and that there were Tabors who were in New London and MA and who moved from Baptist Church to Baptist Church with the Tubbs. There is also the negative evidence. I feel that a DNA test could give some clues. Regards, Judy [email protected]

Just checked your website again. It is so rich it is hard to encompass all the information. I see you have Samuel Tubbs and his children of New London so I wasn't telling you anything new. :-) With your Tubb/s connections can you put me in touch with anyone from either of the lines that would be willing to submit a DNA sample? I wrote the following to the Tubb list. Do you have any idea where someone picked up the thought that a John Tubb married a Rebecca Capshaw? I discount it, but the way it has taken on a life of its own truly nags at me. Judy Lastly, I am looking for information on the marriage of a John Tubb to a Rebecca Capshaw. This information may have originated from an LDS source. Entries are found in the IGI, Ancestral File, and Pedigree Resource File on FamilySearch.org These entries apparently have been picked up by family researchers on the southern Tubb clan. The interesting thing is that if Rebecca Capshaw was born in 1775 as listed in the IGI and other LDS entries and John Tubb was born about 1700 so as to have sons William and George born in the late 1720's, then mother Rebecca was some 45 years younger than her sons. On the other hand, some researchers have pushed Rebecca's birth date up to 1700 and some suggest she was born in England. The Capshaw family was from Maryland according to Family Trees on Ancestry -- which are not always reliable. I have the following on a Capshaw/Tubb relationship in Rutherford County: "A Deed of Sale from James Capshaw to Richard Tubb for 70 acres of Land Dated the 3d Day of July 1774 proved in open Court by Essex Capshaw Evidence thereto. Ord'd to be Reg'd." There have been some attempts to identify this Richard Tubb. Family legend does not include him among the brothers except for one quote from Parish's book to the effect that three brothers went to the war and two came home--presumably William and George.
I'm very interested in the DNA outcome for the descendents of George Tubbs (often spelled Tubbe or Tubbee), particularly as there is very good evidence that his wife, Mary, was full blood Choctaw. There is a possibility that Elizabeth Floyd Tubb has Indian connection in her family. There has long been some question as to whether or not Rebecca Tubb, daughter of Elizabeth and George Jr, is actually a daughter of Choctaw chief Moshulatubbe. Clarifying data will be very interesting. thanks, Anne Morgan Gray (descended through line of George Tubbe & Mary, George Jr & Elizabeth Floyd, Rebecca Tubbe and Jacob Peter Williams, Lucinda Williams and Francis McGraw, Catherine McGraw & Benjamin Robertson, Lena Robertson & C.I. Leek, LaDelle Leek & Powell Morgan).

I saw the papers for the application of an Elisha Petty--and what seemed like a hundred other Tubb descendants--for status as a Choctaw on Jan Armstrong's web page ( http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ ~janarmstrong/tubbspettyindian.html ). These are scanned images of photocopies of the original documents so the information is definitive. The date on the final disposition of the case is 1903. According to my data and the documents, Elisha Petty was the son of Alfred Petty and Mary [Polly] Tubb. daughter of George Tubb and Elizabeth Jane Floyd. This George Tubb was the son of George and Mary Tubb. The claim, in the end, was denied. Elisha Petty had no proof beyond family history or legend. There are two kinds of DNA used in determining genetic relationships. The Y-DNA is passed only through the male line from father to son. This is most useful in determining family relationships through the surname. That is why I am interested to see whether there is any genetic relationship through the male Tubb surnamed lines in the northern Tubbs clan, the Maryland Tubbs clan and the southern Tubb clan. But any genetic comparisons to determine that kind of genetic relationships MUST be made from Tubb/s surnamed males. And it really needs a paper trail back as far as possible. The second kind of DNA is mitochondrial DNA which is passed from a mother to her children. The sons of the mother do not pass her mitochondrial DNA to the children. The DNA carried by the sons' children comes from the wives of the sons. Thus the mitochondrial DNA carried by any person comes through the female line. My DNA comes from my mother Gladys [Hopkins] Thomas, which came 'from her mother, Mittie [George] Hopkins, which came from her mother Rachel [Davis] George, which came from her mother Sabry [Gage] Davis. There my knowledge stops because I cannot find the name of Sabry's mother. Mitochondrial DNA basically shows deep lineage (into the thousands of years) , although if great numbers of women would have their mitochondrial DNA analyzed recent genetic relationships could begin to be established through the maternal lines. (Very big hint for women to submit their mitochondrial DNA.) I have submitted my mitochondrial DNA for testing and it shows that I am an "H" haplotype which means that my mitochondrial DNA has been passed directly from a woman who was in a group of people in the Near East and then moved up through Eastern Europe into Western Europe thousands of years ago. (A very general description.) If Mary Tubb, wife of George Tubb was a Choctaw, this could be proved if a woman who is in the maternal line of descent (meaning that her ancestry THROUGH THE FEMALE LINE OF DESCENT goes back ll the way to Mary Tubb) has a mitochondrial haplotype would be one of those that indicate Native American mitochondrial DNA. Again, a paper trail is needed at this point to prove the line of descent. Given your line of descent your mitochondrial DNA would come through LaDelle Leek and her maternal line. I hope I have been clear. These are not concepts which are easy to grasp. I think one of the hardest mind exercises I had to do was when I did a presentation for our local genealogical society on genetic genealogy about 2 1/2 years ago -- and I had been working with surnamed males for about 2 years before that. My brain hurt. :-) I will be happy to clarify and/or answer any questions. I realize that part of the fourth paragraph was garbled. It should read: If Mary Tubb, wife of George Tubb was a Choctaw, this could be proved if a woman who is in the maternal line of descent (meaning that her ancestry THROUGH THE FEMALE LINE OF DESCENT goes back all the way to Mary Tubb) has a mitochondrial haplotype that would be one of those haplotypes that indicate Native American mitochondrial DNA. started with Tubb/s lists on Rootsweb and this morning posted a request on a number of forums on Genforum. I thought I would write to the Perry County AL Genealogical Society and see if they would put out the word. Finding someone from the New England line could be harder and it could take me a long time, but I'm trying.
The very first male I contacted for DNA (other than I Brown cousin with whom I had been working as a researcher on that family for some time and who is now a Brown surname project coordinator for Family Tree DNA) was Harold Hopkins in Sweetwater, TX. I had a friend who had a phone book for Sweetwater TX where Nancy Lavonia [Tubb] Hopkins and lived and died as did her husband WW Hopkins. Obviously ,I was working on the Hopkins line at the time. At any rate, I simply picked up the phone with a certain amount of chutzpah and a definite part of fear and trembling. It turned out that Harold was 85 years old and a double cousin of my mother. He was wonderful --so open and he and his wife so welcoming. I offered to pay for the test if he would take the test (another remote cousin actually paid for half of it so we could see if Harold's DNA matched his.) He said he would so I ordered the test, used a free ticket on Southwest Airlines to fly to Midland, rented a car, drove to Sweetwater. He was 85 years old, had no children at all (so I'm VERY happy I found him) and didn't know of any living nieces or nephews. We took one sample on the morning after my evening arrival, went out and visited the Sweetwater cemetery where all my Sweetwater ancestors and relations are buried, came back, went out to lunch, took another swab. I drove back to Midland hopped a return flight and came home.
And that's my first experience. :-)
Judy

Actually, not that far away from you. We live in Strawberry, AZ -- about 90 miles north and east of Scottsdale and about 90 miles south and east of Strawberry where wild strawberries have traditionally grown. We're in a Ponderosa forest, although most of the trees on our 1 1/4 acres are fir and Gambel oak. My husband Bruce and I are both retired high school librarians at Phoenix area schools. We have had a summer home here in Strawberry since the early 70's. We completely remodeled the cabin into a full-time residence in 1999-2000.
We have bred and exhibited Boxers for about 25 years and are still actively showing and judging. We travel a lot with the dogs in our motorhome to shows, but the last time we were through El Paso was about four years ago. We mostly go to CA, the northwest, and into the midwest from I-40. We go to KY every year for our national Boxer specialty, but, again, on I-40.
We have one son, and I have one brother, Bruce has one sister.
At some time when you have a moment my two websites are:
<http://freepages.pets.rootsweb.com/~jvoran/index.htm> (Strawberry Boxers with pictures of our Strawberry home)
<http:freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/i~jvoran/index.htm> (My genealogy pages where the work I am trying to finish on my Tubb line will go)
I also an co-webmaster for the American Boxer Club website and webmaster for the American Boxer Charitable Foundation, the Northern Gila County Genealogical Society, and the Mogollon Chapter of the DAR (became a DAR based on the service of William and George Tubb)
Best,
Judy
