2 PLAC Taken captive by indians & French - Deerfield Attack.

JOHN STEBBINS was captured by the Indians and taken to Canada. Tanquay's"Dictionaire Genealogique Des Familles Canadiennes," Volume VII, pp 219and 558 explains the change in names of this Canadian branch...

While in route to Canada, Abigail Nim's father was killed - she was four(4) years old. Not too much is known of what happened to Abigail (akaMarie-Elizabeth Stebenne) except that she might have been adopted by JohnStebbins as she was later known to be baptisted as Marie-ElizabethStebenne. The Stebenne name is a French expression of the nameStebbins. While we have no records that Marie-Elizabeth was actuallyadopted into the Stebbins family, we are making that assumption untilfurther evidence dictates the contrary. Note also that John Stebbins, Jrchanged his name to Jean Stebbins I, and that other descendents changedtheir last name to Stebenne. This generation was the very beginning ofthe Stebenne family name that is so prevelant in French Quebec, Canada...

In 1667, it is reported that in Northampton, MA, John Stebbins, Jr. hadbeen sentenced to ten lashes, or a forthy-shilling fine (John Stebbins,Sr paid fine) for complicity in a burglary / runaway attempt by threelocal youths while towns people were in church. In 1674 he was embroiledin another case as five people accused him of "lascivious carriage." NewEngland Outpost, page 82, 138, Richard I. Melvoin, W.W. Norton & Company,1988.

He served at Springfield under Captain Lathrop and was the only knownunwounded survivor of the Bloody Brook Massacre on September 18, 1675.The second day after the massacre he enlisted under Capt. Samuel Moselyand served to the close of the war (1675-76). He took the oath ofAllegiance at Northampton on February 8, 1678. He resided for a time inthe vicinity of Boston, then moved to Deerfield at its permanent settlein 1682, lot 35.

John Stebbins, Jr. at different dates received land grants at Deerfieldand held various offices. At the time of the Deerfield Massacre (February1704) the house of John Stebbins, Jr. was burned down, he his wife andhis five children, along with Abigaiul, his married daughter and herhusband, Jacques de Noyen, we captrued and taken to Canada. JohnStebbins, Jr., his wife Dorothy and their oldest son John III were laterredeemed and returned to New England. His son, Samuel, returned in 1723.The other children all remained in Canada. (further entry from DanVient, descendant of Thankful (Louise-Therese) Stebbins)

From my great uncle's research: " The earliest record of the Stebbinsfamily, from which the Vient family is descended. The area known asDeerfield, Mass. was originally a land grant to the town of Dedham, purchased from the Pocumtuck Indian tribe in 1670. Shares were sold tosettlers who came to live in this new area, which was then thenorthernmost outpost in New England.

John Stebbins and his family settled in this area now called Deerfield. He was a carpenter by trade, and a soldier in king Phillip's war. InSeptember 1675 > King Phillips Indians ambushed most of the maleinhabitants at nearby Bloody Brook and massacred all but three men whoescaped to seek help. When soldiers from nearby Hadley arrived the nextday to help Captain Lothrup's detail, they were all dead but one man, andhe was badly wounded. He was Captain John Stebbins, and is known inhistory as the sole survivor of the Bloody Brook massacre.

Deerfield was abandoned for lack of soldiers to protect it. In 1684settlers began to return and erected a palisade of logs , erected on endto cover the entire area of about twenty acres. During Queen Anne's war,a party of 200 French and 142 Indians from Canada attacked Deerfieldduring bitter cold and deep snows. On February 29, 1704, deep snowdriftsagainst the palisades allowed the attackers to scale the walls andsurprise the garrison. Fierce fighting ensued, and with 111 prisoners, amongst were John Stebbins, his wife and six children the French Captainde Rouville marched his party through the deep
snows to Lake Champlain, then over the ice to Canada.

The suffering was intense during this cold march and many prisoners diedor were killed by the Indians if they slowed up. Eventually small partiesof Indians left the group with captives they selected and the remainderbrought to places like Chambly and Sorel by the French. The Stebbinsfamily was separated; one son Samuel was taken by the Indians
and was never heard from again. The parents and some of the children werelater ransomed and returned to Deerfield. One little girl, ThankfulStebbins, 13 years old was kept by de Rouville and lived at his home inChambly. The little girl was re-baptized Therese Louise, and it is fromher that the Vient's are descended."

John married Dorothy ALEXANDER 1, 2, 3, 4 daughter of John , Jr ALEXANDER and BEATRICE on 4 Jan 1679/1680 in Boston, Suffolk County, MA. Dorothy was born about 1660 in Newton, Middlesex County, MA. She died in 1733/1741 in Deerfield, Franklin County, MA.

Oath of fidelity, 1678; freeman, 1684. from Gen. Dict. of NE, by Savage.

Benoni Stebbins was born in 1655, son of John Stebbins and his firstwife, Ann. His mother died giving birth to Benoni, and his fatherremarried and had a large second family. Benoni's parents lived in thefrontier town of Northampton, Massachusetts, settled about 1658. InSeptember, 1667, Benoni, only 12 years old, and two good friends, JamesBennett, 15 years old, and Godfrey Nims, about 13, decided to run awayand join the French in Canada. This youthful caper is related in courtrecords, dated September 24, 1667, in Springfield, Massachusetts. Thethree boys broke into the home of Robert Bartlett, two Sundays in a row, while Bartlett's family was at church, and stole 24 shillings in silver, and 7 shillings in wampum, which they gave to an Indian, Quequalatt, topay him to guide them to the French. They were discovered and bound overto court for their crimes. The Court ordered the three "well whipt ontheir naked bodyes; viz. Nims and Bennett with 15 lashes apeece andBenoni Stebbins with I I lashes. And the said Nims and Stebbins are topay Robert Bartlett the surnme of 4' being accounted treble according tolaw, for what goods he hath lost by their meanes." Ralph Hutchinson,step-father of James Bennett, and others, presented a petition to theCourt, that James sentence be released, because of his mother's weakness, and the court ordered him to pay a fine of 5 # instead. Also, Benoni'solder brother, John Stebbins Jr, was ordered to appear before the courton charges that he had known about the plot to run away and had concealedit, and the court ordered him to be whipped with 10 lashes, or to pay 40shillings fine. His father paid the fine. The Indian who helped in thisplot was arrested the next year, and sentenced to 20 lashes, and torestore the money and goods he had received from the boys.

Benoni married Mary Broughton, young widow of James Bennett (who waskilled by Indians, in 1676, just 16 months after their marriage, andleaving a 4 month old daughter, Mary). They were married in November,1676, and made their home in Northampton, and Deerfield. They had 6children together, and Benoni raised Mary's daughter by her firstmarriage with his own. Mary died August 2, 1689. Benoni married 2ndHannah , in 1691, and they had 2 children together.

In 1704, the Indians attacked the town of Deerfield, on February 29,killing or taking captive many of it's residents. Benoni Stebbin's house, occupied by Sargeant Stebbins, his wife Hannah, and 5 children, alongwith probably 10 or 12 others, including at least one soldier, wasattacked. The occupants of the house drove the Indians back a couple oftimes, but the Indians then tried to set the house on fire. The occupantsstill kept them at bay until reinforcements arrived. Benoni Stebbins waskilled, and two others wounded during this fight. His wife and 5 childrenall survived the attack. During the same attack, Benoni's brother John, his wife Dorothy and 6 children, were all captured. None in this familywere killed, and John and his son John were redeemed later, but the reststayed in Canada. Also captured in this fight, were Mary, daughter ofBenoni's first wife by her first husband, James Bennett, who was by thenmarried to John Fields, and her oldest daughter and son, (the youngestdaughter was killed). Mary was later redeemed with her son, but theoldest daughter stayed in Canada.
