History of the Lands and Their Owners in Galloway, FHL 941.49, v. 3, p 204 states he and his father had a lease of Balmangan in 1534, which lease was renewed in 1565. "William, in Balmangan, had also a charter of Drumrukcalzie, dated 31st March 1587. We next find his name in a charter dated 30th March 1588, when Balmangan was granted to him as the second son of Gilbert Maclellan, first of Barmagachen. He married Margaret Gordon, daughter of John Gordon of Airds, Kells."
History of the Lands and Their Owners in Galloway, FHL 941.49 H2m 1994 v. 4, p 76;
Editors have decided that Margaret must have been his second marriage, and the children were products of the first one, because the years don't work out.
