Boardmills First Presbyterian Graveyard; film MIC 637/2 at Belfast PRO, October 1999 - hodge podge of Irish records and personal notes
Book of McKee p 119 states "Linen" Hugh bought the farm at Poagsburn about 1760." Downshire Estate rentals of 1801 list Hugh of Carricknaveagh with a lease of 1769 lease lives of Hugh, Ann, and Robert age 34.
Castlereagh Estate Rental 1801-1804 lists Hugh M'Kee for lives of Hugh M'Kee, John M'Kee, Robert M'Kee 34 (his sons) and another lists Thomas M'Kee of Lisbane for life of Hugh McKee 67 (This Hugh would have been 67 in 1801- Thomas is his nephew); the estate rental for 1770 lists Hugh M'Kee...Carrickneveagh...15
Hodge Podge film lists states: "Rev David McKee of Anaghlone was the second son of Hugh McKee, farmer & linen-draper, three miles north of Saintfield (at Poagsburn). Hugh married Anne Warnock [obviously an error] (or was it Elizabeth; as both names occur in his register, she under dates 8 Sep 1782 & 4 Sep 1785), a lady from the Ards. He was a ruling elder in First Boardmills, and one of those who in 1810 furthered the candidature of the Rev John Sturgeon against the opposition of Andrew Warwick, John Gill, James Edgar, and others. He was known as 'Linen Hugh,' and was the third son of John McKee of Lisbane. His elder brothers were James, who succeeded his father in Lisbane, and John, who settled in Killynure. Of Hugh's family it would appear that the eldest son was Robert of Poagsburn. The second was the Rev. David McKee of Anaghlone, who is reported to have been six feet, four inches in height, and to have died on 12th March, 1867, aged 90."
Copy of booklet from Frank Fox, 229 Belfast Road, Ballynahinch, county Down, No Ireland BT248UP states: "The pioneer's grandson, Hugh McKee, of Poagsborn, became a successful linen merchant in the latter part of the eighteenth century, and acquired from Lord Donegal the privilege of erecting a stone in the old linen market in Donegal street, Belfast, on which to buy and sell linen. This necessitated his having a stamp for marking the linen thus purchased or sold, and so he had one made from the original crest on the patent [his grandfather's land patent from the Crown], using however the English translation of the motto. This stamp was lost, but his son John, who was killed in 1812, was one of the few men in that neighborhood to get a watch, and with it he got a seal with the family crest; both of which are now in the possession of his grandnephew, Mr. David McKee, Oughley, Saintfield, County Down, Ireland." On page 16 it reads: "A third son of John, of Lisban, was Hugh, who purchased Poagsburn farm about 1760, where he raised a large family...His oldest son was Robert...another was John..Still another was the celebrated Rev. David mcKee, who preached at Annaghlone, for over sixty years...The Poagsburn farm is now occupied by Linen Hughie's grandson, Robert McKee."
Hugh of "Carginaveagh" was listed as a freeholder, county Down, 1777
