The Book of Mackay, pg. 316; of the Caithness Horse; Blackcastle, p 128 states: "Elizabeth Mackay, who married Captain John Sutherland, a descendant of John Sutherland of Berrydale, a brave and meritorious Officer, who died at Dunbeath, County of Caithness 20th March 1812, when the following account of his services appeared in the public prints of the day 'He entered His Majesty's Service in early life, fought under the immortal General Wolfe at Louisburgh and the seige of Quebec, and afterwards at Montreal under General Murray. After whicvh he served five years in the Duke of Gordon's Fencibles raised in 1778, and nine years as Captain in the Horse Volunteers of the County of Caithness.'"
IGI gives his birth as 8 Dec 1724 Thurso to James and marriages to "Elspet Mackay 7 Mar 1786 Reay Caithness and 17 Mar 1768 Latheron Caithness to "Betty McKay."

History of the Lands and Their Owners in Galloway, FHL #941.49 H2m 1994, v 1, pg 364: "Helen Vaus, was then under age [at the death of her father in 1567], and became a ward of the crown, the lands being held from the Sovereign. The wardship, &c,., were given to Sir John Bellenden of Auchinvole. Under this authority, Sir John gave her a choice of husband from the elder sons of four of the proprietors in the district, all of whom she refused....[he] gave the said Helen to choose whether she would marry one of these four persons underwritten, equal to her in living and blood; that is to say--" Uchtred M'Dowall son of Wm, Andro Agnew, son of Patrick, William M'Culloch, son of Symon of Mertoun, and John M'Culloch, son of John of Torhouse.
