Record of the House of Kirkcudbright, by the late John McClellan, FHL 941.49 H2ma, p 32 states: "Sir Robert M'Clellan of Bomby (knighted by james I of England; created [by] Charles I, in 1629 a baronet, and in 1633 a peer, with the title of Lord Kirkcudbright), who married first, Anne, daughter of Sir Matthew Campbell...and secondly, Mary, daughter of Hugh Montgomery...his only child Marion, daughter by his first wife...He with his wife and family lived in his leasehold castle of lBallycastle, in Ulster, Ireland, where he died in 1639."

History of the Lands and Their Owners in Galloway, FHL #941.49 H2m 1994, v 1, p 41 states John married Grizzil Vans, daughter of Sir Patrick of Barbarroch and widow of John Kennedy. John had a charter in 1594. His death is also given.
P 369-70 relates the story of Helen Vaus' kitnapping by Alexander M'Kie. P 341 states: "At the end of the first paragraph, page 370, we have to state, as a conclusion to the curious transaction dated the 9th June 1585 (between Sir Patrick Vaus, Alexander M'Kie, and Helen Vaus, his spouse), that Alexander M'Kie was killed by John M'Dowall of Freuch, parish of Stoneykirk, for which he was delaitait on the 2d July 1619. The whole history of Helen Vaus and her husband, Alexander M'Kie, creates a feeling of sympathy."
