He married Margaret Rust Spencer, daughter of Robinson Spencer and Margaret Elizabeth Rust, on 22 April 1919 at Whangarei; A quiet but pretty wedding was solemnised in the Whangarei Presbyterian Church yesterday morning, when Miss Margaret Spencer, younger daughter of Mrs Spencer, of Drummond Street, was united to Mr Alfred James Churches, of Auckland. The bride, who was given away by her uncle, Mr A. M. Rust, of Hikurangi, was most becomingly attired in a grey gaberdine costume, with fur collar, black hat, lined with vieux rose. Miss I. Spencer, sister of the bride, was in attendance as bridesmaid, and was tastefully dressed in khaki plaiding, with hat to match. Mr H. Spence acted as best man, both the bridegroom and best man having recently returned from active service. The Rev. G. W. Lochore was the officiating minister, and the church was prettily decorated by girl friends of the bride. After the ceremony the organist, Mr Albert Dobson, played the Wedding March. The young couple, who were the recipients of numerous valuable and handsome presents, left by the Manaia yesterday to take up their future home in Auckland. Northern Advocate, 23 April 1919.1,2
