Marriage* | 22 April 1919 | Margaret Rust Spencer married Alfred James Churches on 22 April 1919 at Whangarei; A quiet but pretty wedding was solemnised in the Whangarei Presbyterian Church yesterday morning, when Miss Margaret Spencer, younger daughter of Mrs Spencer, of Drummond Street, was united to Mr Alfred James Churches, of Auckland. The bride, who was given away by her uncle, Mr A. M. Rust, of Hikurangi, was most becomingly attired in a grey gaberdine costume, with fur collar, black hat, lined with vieux rose. Miss I. Spencer, sister of the bride, was in attendance as bridesmaid, and was tastefully dressed in khaki plaiding, with hat to match. Mr H. Spence acted as best man, both the bridegroom and best man having recently returned from active service. The Rev. G. W. Lochore was the officiating minister, and the church was prettily decorated by girl friends of the bride. After the ceremony the organist, Mr Albert Dobson, played the Wedding March. The young couple, who were the recipients of numerous valuable and handsome presents, left by the Manaia yesterday to take up their future home in Auckland. Northern Advocate, 23 April 1919.1,2 |

- [S689] Margaret Knight nee Churches, Churches in "Rootsweb Mailing List - Posting," listserve message 19 June 2002, I write from New Zealand. My great grandfather was Thomas CHURCHES, born in Godney in 1816 who, with his wife, Phoebe REEVES born in 1822, somewhere in Somerset, and their two first children left England for New Zealand. They sailed on the barque St George and arrived in Auckland, New Zealand on the 24th of October 1842.
As my husband and I are contemplating a visit to the UK, I am interested in knowing if any descendants of the family line still live in the Godney, Meare, Westhay Axbridge, Wedmore area(s).
The Somerset family tree (as I understand it) comprises:-
1. William CHURCHOUSE b. c 1580 - m. Agnes Day? in Meare 1 December 1605
2. John CHURCHOUSE (I) (or Churchis) b. 09 May 1619 , Meare, m. Mary?

6. Jeremiah CHURCHOUSE b. 23 June 1782 , Meare, m. Elizabeth Pim, Meare on 17 February 1806
7. Thomas CHURCHES b. c. 1816, Godney, m. Phoebe Reeves in Axbridge,14 May 1838
The New Zealand family tree continues
8. Frederick Churches, b. 30 July 1839, m. Elizabeth Jane Rowe, 10 April 1878, Tamaki, Auckland, New Zealand
9. Alfred James Churches, b. 21 April 1891, m. Margaret Rust Spencer, 22 April 1919, Whangarei, New Zealand
10. Edwin James Churches, b. 19 December 1926, m. Alice Jane Wickins, 05 April 1952, Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand
Edwin and Alice are my parents.
I would be delighted to make contact with anyone recognizing the family tree names or having those same names in their family tree.

Mr Spencer's first tasks were to arrange for the fencing of the school property and for repairs to he teacher's house and school room. At the school inspector's visit on 6 April 1886, 43 pupils were in attendance, and favourable commnts on Mr Spencer's work in general were made in the report. The school building had a narrow escape from fire on 3 August 1886 when the local store owned by Mr Dickeson was burned to the ground. Although only 50ft away, the school was to windward and fortunately escaped damage. Because of the high roll and also the size of Mr Spencer's family, his request for additions and alterations to the school building were approved, and in December 1886 hte tender of 284 pounds from Mr A Burns, builder of Sussex Street, Auckland was accepted. The work was carried out in the new year and completed by June 1887. Tragedy struck in March 1887 with the sudden death of Mrs Spencer, to be followed in May 1887 by the death of the youngest of their children (3 months old). At the inspection visit on 12 September 1887, 32 pupils were in attendance and on the inspectors recommendation, Mr Spencer's daughter (name not recorded) was appointed assistant mistress. By the end of October 1887 an alarming drop in attendance to 19 pupils had occurred. For two successive years the potato crop had failed and in order to obtain a living it was necessary for families to migrate to the gumfields to find work with a corresponding effect on the school roll. At the start of the new school year 1888 only 14 children were in attendance but this had risen to 21 at the time of the inspection in April 1888. Mr Spencer was transferred to Upper Waihou Native School at the end of 1888. The name of Uper Waihou was later changed to Rangiahua Native School on 27 July 1885 at Mangakahia Native School, Northland. |
